Six Flags Great Adventure Announces New Attraction for 2009 Season

Last update: 2:24 p.m. EDT Oct. 23, 2008
JACKSON, N.J., Oct 23, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Six Flags Great Adventure, recognized for its award-winning collection of thrill rides, today unveiled plans to dramatically transform the world's first floorless, looping coaster, Medusa. The Medusa redesign will deliver a multi-sensory ride experience with all-new thematics and innovative, state-of-the-art visual, audio and sensory effects launching it into another dimension of thrills and excitement.

"Since it opened in 1999 as the world's first floorless coaster, Medusa has been a fan favorite," said Mark Kane, Six Flags Great Adventure Park President. "This redesign will take one of the park's most popular attractions to the next level. A similar transformation of the X2 coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Los Angeles has received widespread acclaim and we expect the relaunch of this ride to shatter that response. It will be a must-ride experience."

Six Flags Great Adventure continues to push the envelope -- going far beyond traditional coasters to offer thrill seekers the exhilaration of a roller coaster combined with unique storytelling and high tech elements incorporating fire, fog, water and precisely orchestrated audio production designed to assault the senses for a world class "show" on a roller coaster.
Unlike traditional coasters, Medusa trains are floorless, giving riders the sensation of flying as their feet dangle above the track. The B&M coaster is one of 13 coasters at Six Flags Great Adventure and has delivered more than 9 million rides since its debut. Guests can take advantage of the last chance to experience Medusa's original Greek mythology theme during the remaining days of Fright Fest. Compelling details of Medusa's multi-dimensional ride transformation will be revealed as Spring 2009 draws near.

Guests can experience all that Six Flags Great Adventure has to offer all season long with a 2009 Season Pass. A Season Pass offers guests unlimited visits to the theme park and Wild Safari and pays for itself in less than two visits. When purchasing a Season Pass, guests receive a coupon book featuring more than $300 in special offers including free concerts and five Bring-A-Friend-Free tickets for selected days. A Season Pass can be used at all Six Flags Theme Parks throughout the country and is available for purchase online at http://www.Sixflags.com/greatadventure for only $84.99. Guests who buy a 2009 Season Pass now can use it the remainder of the 2008 season to experience all the thrills and chills of Fright Fest.

I like it.

I'm wondering if they're going to paint it...

Great news! Medusa is long overdue for an overhaul and this is more than expected. If nothing else, at least they'll be changing the coaster's opening time from noon back to 10am. :)
Who knows, maybe it will become my favorite coaster again like it was when it first opened...but then El Toro wasn't around way back when.

I'm still a little unclear about this. What exactly are these 'effects' they're slapping on? Does anybody that's been on X2 care to explain?

^Well, if its like X2, I would expect a repainting, some train modifications, random spurts of fire and mist out of nowhere, and music playing that doesn't relate to the ride at all.

Unlike a lot of people, I really enjoyed Medusa. I know it's nothing super special, but it was still a very good coaster and not as rough as some people (like Steve) say. However, I do agree that it needs a paint job, and not that I'm against the colours, they were definitely in need of at least a repaint.

The fire and fog stuff is meh, because the ride isn't really that long to begin with and when you're upsidedown, unless they install like, fire on the inversions and stuff, you won't be seeing too much. Fog will be cool though; I love being on a coaster and not being able to see what's next.

We shall see though.. Too bad I won't be riding it again for the next few years, but I'll be excited to hear how it is. I'm also excited to see if it'll get a new colour scheme.

I really, really liked Medusa, it's one of my favourite Floorlesses, I found it to be a nice and intense ride.

Plus, rough? Shut up.

But, it could also do with a little re-do, so yay.

Hmmm... I have never ridden Medusa, but a friend of me has, and he thought it was the best ride at the park (he didn't ride Nitro). I really hope this will make it even better.
Any coasters with strong colours need repaint every now and then, and it's always a plus anyways.

On the train side, do anyone know what has changed on Floorless coasters since Medusa's debut, and whether it will be installed on Medusa?

But I'm still not sure to look upon this as the "magic" change SF promises, or just effects randomly placed on a coaster, in an attempt to make it more attractive.

^I'm not sure anything has changed in the floorless design.

I think they've made the train lighter and stronger, I seem to remember hearing that somewhere. However I don't think anything that major has changed.

Nothing visual changed.

*Rode the oldest and newest Floorlesses in the same day. Cause I'm epic*

But, alas, as Hixee says, that's not to say nothing changed inside. Oh, and there is always the possibility for something brand spanking new to be revealed just for Dusa.

I agree. There's nothing rough about Medusa. Now Hydra (rode both the same day*)...well that's a different story.
Also agree with Ben in that it's one of my all-time favorite floorless coasters, even if it is the oldest. Besides I'd rather see them spending money on improving Medusa than taking down 3 rides to build a piece of crap like Dark Knight.
And nothing needs to be done with the trains other than a little sprucing up (paint, seats & harnesses). If Medusa's are a bit heavier than the new ones, then I say leave them alone as the coaster runs great with them as they are.

What I find bemusing is that the article mentions the ride's "Greek methology Theme".

pardon? No, exactly.

A bit of a tart up will be good though, I presume.

^I know it's very loose, but what DOES the name 'Medusa' suggest to you if not Greek Mythology?

You don't need to look any further then the logo really...

Which leads to my question - re-name? Probably.

^Got to admit that quote is amusing, but I'll probably ride it one more time on Sunday just to enjoy the Greek mythology theme one last time. :p

Ben, your opinion on "rough" is trash, because you think S:RoS SFNE is rough. Give me a break. For someone that likes the damned Ultimate so much, you should know better.

Late... but... I don't think S:RoS is rough. It rattles, but it's not rough.

Plus, you've not even been on the Ultimate, so I wouldn't comment on that...

Hydra is a LOT rougher then Medusa. And frankly, to think this coaster is rough, you have to be a freakin' pussy.

Anyway, to update this...

It's gone a bit blue. Vile colour for B&Ms, since with a re-paint, the original colour was fit.

I hope that is a primer, because it just doesn't look right.

Good news for Six Flags Great Adventure. I'm wandering why they are adding audio effects to the rides? Most of people in the train are screaming, plus the sound of the train running on the track...
I hope they will re-paint it, same if the colors are the same.

If you want to talk about being a wuss, whining about a ride that barely breaks 50 mph and isn't even 100 ft. tall is quite wussy compared to anything about Medusa.

Well done.

And, I don't know about you, but I rode Hydra with a lot of people, and a fair few times, and we all agreed it was far too rough for a B&M, and much rougher then Medusa earlier that day.
