Re: Pleasureland Southport expansion?
Wow.
Nine years ago Wallis was given a 1 year lease on Pleasureland.
Initially he had tendered to Southport Council to take up the lease permanently and offered a substantial sum to invest (I think it was £50 million) in a permanent park there. It would have included retaining as much of the infrastructure as was left.
Southport rejected his tender in favour of an "entertainment complex" featuring a pub, conference centre and other crap the town didn't need. Urban Splash won the tender to do this.
However, they couldn't invest in time so Southport council offered Wallis 12 month lease to have something on site. Wallis wasn't happy, but took it and offered travelling showmen the opportunity to put rides down in one place for entire seasons.
The one year lease became a three year lease, which became a rolling lease as it became clear (not that it wasn't clear from the start) that Urban Splash couldn't fulfil their obligations.
I think the funniest thing was that at the time, Southport were rebranding themselves as a "traditional seaside resort". That included (on the sea front) removing a fun fair, adding in a huge shiny tin cinema, a new McDonalds and a huge and ugly JCB Sport - alongside repainting the Grade 2 listed weather shelters
It was a joke. Finally Wallis has what he initially wanted, but it's set back his plan ten years.
