Parc Asterix and Paris weekend, June 2010 PTR

peep

CF Legend
After my trip to Parc Asterix in April I just had to go back. I took Asterix noobs Patrick and Benin with me for a very cheap weekend away to enjoy the delights the park has to offer with two evenings in Paris. I begin with the evening before Asterix times....

Friday 11th June 2010

After finishing work at 9pm I got on the Victoria Line down to Victoria station. Upon entering the main train station I met up with Benin and Patrick and we continued on to the coach station. We checked in and awaited our coach. After some faff and everyone getting confused about the location of our coach we finally boarded and sat at the back of the coach. It was hard to get comfortable with the lack of leg room and the heat being so intense, didn't help that the driver didn't turn the engine on till last minute so we didn't get any air con to help cool us down.

It reached 10:30 and the coach finally left the station. The journey was boring and quite uncomfortable. I think we annoyed a lot of the other passengers with our insistence on talking till after the tunnel. Exiting the coach during the tunnel was also an annoyance as half the other passengers decided to sleep and sprawl themselves all over the place making it hard to walk past without hitting them. Biggest highlight of this journey was stopping before entering the tunnel for toilet times, we found a screen playing Finding Nemo so we stood and watched that for a few minutes :P Another highlight from the journey was exiting the train and with all the mist and lights it looked like we entered the World of Tron which was uber-cool. Sleep was then had after our initial shock of coolness.

Saturday 12th June 2010

When I awoke we were driving into the coach station in Paris (Galleni). We got off the coach, happy to be off the thing and ventured down into the Metro station. We purchased our two-day metro tickets and headed down to the train. After a few changes we finally arrived at the station outside the Louvre museum (Palais-Royal station). It was about 7:30am yet we were awake and happy to be in Paris with Asterix times just a couple of hours away.

We were hungry so we opted for McDonalds breakfast (it was one of about 3 places open). Due to my tiredness I ordered in the most retarded way possible and made a complete fool of myself, oh wells. The breakfast was nice and I loved my little selection of pastries.

After now full we began our search for the coach. With the very cryptic clues from the French version of the Asterix website we navigated our way through the Louvre shopping area and found the coach area. We purchased our very expensive coach tickets and went round the corner to await coach times. I took the opportunity of this coach journey (about 40 mins) to get some extra sleep in.

I awoke just as the coach was turning off the motorway into the road down to Asterix, that was some amazing timing by myself :P

Now in France a Saturday is a school day however we seemed to find the one Saturday all the schools go to Parc Asterix! We counted about 8 coaches or school trips (a lot of them actually being for older year groups). This was not a good sign so we opted to expect the worst and just relax. This was hard once getting into the park as the scene after the gates were dropped for the park opening looked like this...

30936_10150190921180360_529160359_12819739_84832_n.jpg

Busy times indeed. However seeing Asterix's little smile on top of the mountain made things all ok...

There was one ride I wanted to start our day with (as we somehow missed it back in April) was the Vekoma madhouse. It didn't have a queue so it seemed like a great idea. We queued up and in no time at all we were entering the first room.

Don't read the next few paragraphs if you don't want the attraction spoiled before you go
We were a tad confused when we entered the first room. We were greeted by a small village where we had to look into individual windows where our picture was taken and then our photos turned into something that looks like characters in the comics. It was random but cool, then we continued into the next room and our faces lit up with joy and amusement. On one wall your photo appears on a large screen, on the left the wall is full of Roman legionnaires and your face appears on their bodies and on the right wall these legionnaires with your face on march along. It is so amazing and so well done, it's also hilarious and just gets all 50 guests into a great mood.

30936_10150190921240360_529160359_12819744_2934855_n.jpg

You can play spot peep in the above photo :P

So on to the next room. We enter a small tent and are told to look up at this balcony. The curtains open and this fantastic animatronic of Cesar appears who goes on to talk about something in French. He was so awesome though and was even better than most of the animatronics in the Disney parks. The room then rotates and reveals Asterix and Obilix on a screen. They go on to say something in French and then Obilix punches the screen, the platform shakes (which is awesome) and then rotates round to a door.

The door leads to a corridor which smelt rather funny. It wasn't till we entered the next room that we identified it as chlorine. The next room is this amazing fountain area. Some music then starts up and four women are singing while washing something, they are projected on to waterfalls of water in each corner. It is so cool. Then the annoying character that I can't remember the name of appears on a wall, tries to sing with them but it's so bad that everything goes mental and water is going all over the place, it's so epic and all the water effects would make Amanda Thompson wet herself with excitement.

It all calms down and then we entered the final part of the attraction, the madhouse. The theme of the room is of a Roman ship which is really cool. There are screens in the ceiling and walls to show you what's going on outside the ship. Basically Asterix and Obilix come along and spin you down into the depths of the sea, an octopus then spins you back up to the surface and the ride ends. It's absolutely amazing and the effects are so much better than Hex. This attraction makes Hex look unthemed and cheap. It's just so awesome, full of humour, cool effects and is just fantastic fun. LOVE IT!

Spoilers over :D

Well, how the hell could the day get any better? We had just been on the best dark ride ever and the park is really busy, what do we choose next? Oh yeah...TON OF AIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

30936_10150190921245360_529160359_12819745_6795264_n.jpg

The queue looked horrendous and according to the little signpost the queue from where we were would take 90 mins. Benin was excited about riding Zeus...

30936_10150190921255360_529160359_12819746_5496166_n.jpg

And meerkat was spited by Zeus, maybe another time Mr Meerkat :P

30936_10150190921280360_529160359_12819749_4786733_n.jpg

The queue ended up being about an hour yet the queue felt like 30 mins. This was helped by long conversations about, I dunno, life. It was also helped by the absolutely bizarre interaction with the group of Parisian teenagers in front of us. Every now and then they would ask us about certain words and about us. However I did get the feeling they mainly focused on me which was a great concern and huge confusion and randomness when one of them started yelling French that I did not understand. The guys reaction when I said I was from London was amusing though, but overall it was just random and awkward. :P

Anyways, Zeus times happened and just as I remembered from April, it was epic. Patrick and Benin seemed to agree too. The idea was to then walk round to Goudurix and ride that. However when we arrived there was a ridiculously long queue. The same went for the dark ride and swinging ship near it too. We decided to walk through the medieval area through to the Victorian area. The park is so well themed and in one part of the Medieval area they had one guy putting together some stain glass windows and another guy doing pottery which was really cool to see.

We arrived at Oxygenarium, a random spinny dingy ride. The queue wasn't too bad and the ride is great fun, getting some insane spinning on the way down. It seems a shame that there isn't a big splash at the bottom of the drop but it's quite nice to relax after all that spinning.

We were hungry so food was the next option. The choice in the area was sandwiches or hot dogs. Neither seemed to appealing to me (I was starving and wanting something cooked) but I opted for the hot dog, as did Benin. Patrick went for the sandwich option. The food was nice but with the pricing being very similar to DLP it was a little bit costly.

We had about 10-15 mins before the big stunt show started and as it was in the area we opted to go for that. I had no idea what to expect and it really blew me away. It's such a great show full of comedy, amazing stunts and a fun little story. The stage is really on an epic scale with it being a dockyard. A train comes out on 'stage' and the boat explodes and falls backwards, it's insane. There are loads of explosions, vehicles and as previously mentioned, excellent stunts. I was just so impressed with this show and we decided that it must be seen for a second time on the second day.

After that epic show we headed back over to Goudurix to hope that the queue had gone down. Go down it did, it went from being about 2 hours to about an hour and with a two train operation the queue moved quickly. Most peeps tend to moan about the roughness of this Vekoma looper and in my opinion it isn't. It has some very head-bangy moments in the dodgy-designed inversions at the beginning but after that evil batwing inversion it's smooth as glass, the vertical loop is probably one of the best I've been through and the corkscrews are cool. So, in my opinion, it's a great coaster let down by a few bashes to the head near the beginning of the ride.

30936_10150190921580360_529160359_12819768_1062963_n.jpg

We then wanted to make sure Benin got all the other coaster credits (so we could spend the Sunday relaxed). However on our way over to the bobsled coaster we got side-tracked by the Gaule village. It was awesome and I got to meet both Asterix and Obilix!

The village is awesome and is set on the character's home town. We found some random characters running and then a sound of an electric guitar came out of nowhere. Another one of the main characters was on top of a tree house playing with a fake guitar. He then put it down and played his little harp instrument badly and then he disappeared. It was so random but it gave the area such an awesome atmosphere, as if you had walked into the comics.

30936_10150190921805360_529160359_12819781_5728916_n.jpg

You can walk round some random huts and they are all heavily themed. One had some catfish...

30936_10150190921825360_529160359_12819783_5246567_n.jpg

LOLz :P

30936_10150190921850360_529160359_12819785_7007188_n.jpg

The above hut had a screen with a character on it, you shout at it and the character reacts, this was very popular and was very amusing. The whole area just had a great buzz and I think the adults were enjoying it more than the kids :P

We then came out by La Trace du Hourra, the bobsled coaster. The queue was very long but it was ok and some amusement was had at 'bubblegum mountain'. The ride itself is quite boring with the only decent bit being at the end where all the theming is.

30936_10150190922055360_529160359_12819799_8040763_n.jpg

The next coaster on the list was round the corner, hidden amongst all the trees. It was weird because it actually had quite a queue but it's still an enjoyable little coaster, the first drop is actually pretty good.

30936_10150190922065360_529160359_12819800_3228836_n.jpg

Much to my amusement we then went round to the little little coaster near the village. I think it's cool with it's tiny little lift hill and the fun little air time hills. You also go round 4 times :P

30936_10150190922075360_529160359_12819801_496277_n.jpg

Opposite is Le Grande Splatch! This had no queue compared to when we had passes it earlier in the day so we thought "why not?". Didn't know what to expect, all we knew was that it is a big boat ride with a double-drop at the end. After a little wait (the queue moved a lot quicker than we expected) we were on. We went up the lift hill and noticed the little drop round the corner. The drop was fun and didn't get anyone wet (maybe the peeps at the front but I couldn't tell). We then gently meander round and we all hear this cool sound effect of like a cartoon boulder flying through the sky and then 'BOOM' a massive explosion of water right next to the boat that got everyone soaked. It was awesome, one of the best effects on a water ride I've ever experienced. We continued round and sounds of arrows flying through the air and then shoots of water going over the boat happened. This then happened again a bit further along and then that cartoon-like noise happened and there was a sense of panic amongst everyone on the boat, the tension was hilarious. Then all of a sudden there was about 4 or 5 explosions from the water, it was epic. Then we went round the corner and had the big double-drop. It was such a great ride which was just awesome fun.

30936_10150190922085360_529160359_12819802_955024_n.jpg

Time was going by quite fast now and so we headed over to see what the queue for the Icarus-themed coaster was like. It was short so we joined it. It is a very random coaster with some heavy brakes. There are moments on the drops of amusement and the station and queueline are very well themed with hints of comedy in there.

However this was to be the last ride of the day. We made our way to the entrance area, had a little look in the shops, collected our big bags from the concierge place and then headed over to the coach.

Thanks for reading. I shall continue with the Saturday evening and Sunday soon...

Not a lot to add really...

Such an epic park, needs to be talked about more... Defo not about the rides but the theme and atmosphere and that's something I do love...

Well, to start off, I have been informed that Cesar is a MACK madhouse, not a Vekoma madhouse, meh.

And so I continue...

Saturday night, 12th June 2010

The coach journey back to Paris went by quite quickly (I feel asleep again :P) but we hit some serious traffic when getting more in the centre of Paris. Some major road was closed off by police and traffic jams were everywhere. The driver game up in the end as we pretty much next to the Louvre and let us all off. We were hungry and very tired but first we had to find the hotel!

After several changes on the Metro and about a 40 min journey we got to our stop and looked for the hotel. At first we starting going too far down the massive road but then we managed to get our bearings and found the small hotel sitting on the corner of a junction. For those interested, we stayed at Eiffel Villa Garibaldi (2 star). We went in and the manager was sitting at his antique-looking desk. He welcomed us to the hotel in perfect English (with a strange accent over the top) and as we were the last to check in for that day he instantly knew who we were and got us checked in. After paying the random hotel tax charge thingy we headed up to our room. We climbed the three flights of stairs which were small, cramped and kinda spirally (got a little dizzy by the time we were at the top). We finally got to our room. It was small and contained a flat screen TV, a double bed, a single bed and had a small en-suite. It was quite nice, especially for how much we paid considering it's literally down the road from the Eiffel Tower.

Patrick freshened up and so I turned the TV on and low and behold the England game kicked off seconds after I turned it on, epic timing. It was nice to lay on a bed for a while, really wanted to just fall asleep there and then. However after a while we got ready and headed out for some food. We decided to just go for something nearby and then try and find the tower afterwards. We ended up at an Italian restaurant which was really nice and the food was served pretty quickly. We paid up and started our little journey to the tower.

For some reason I didn't bring my little map with me so we had to rely on instinct to try and find it lol. This resulted us in going the wrong way for some time and only when we gave up I saw the lovely orange lights through the trees. This gave us some hope and we walked in the direction of the lights. Eventually we were getting closer and this was our view down one of the boulevards...

30936_10150190922120360_529160359_12819808_7147483_n.jpg

30936_10150190922160360_529160359_12819814_883462_n.jpg

We continued onwards and heard loud classical music, we couldn't work out where it was coming from but it intrigued us highly. We then came across this cool military building, was great for photos.

30936_10150190922315360_529160359_12819827_1174955_n.jpg

30936_10150190922335360_529160359_12819830_4807743_n.jpg

We then had to walk around it's grounds and we got to the grass area in front of the tower. There was some massive stage set up in front of it and loads of people in the area. Turns out the music we heard was some massive Russia celebration or something, shame we missed (finished when we were on the other side of the military building). We then spent some time wandering around the area of the tower.

30936_10150190922345360_529160359_12819832_7515842_n.jpg

30936_10150190922355360_529160359_12819833_554676_n.jpg

It was really late now so we headed back to the hotel. When we finally got there the manager informed us that England drew to USA much to our amusement as he was very frank about our performance lol. "Your goalkeeper is ****" :P We then headed up to the room and slept, it really didn't take long for me to get off to sleep as it had been an exhausting couple of days.

Sunday 13th June 2010

I woke up to the sound of my loud alarm on my phone. Oh, unwanted early times, yet we had to suffer early hours to actually get to the park, oh well. After getting ready I decided to take a few pics of the hotel room.

30936_10150190922505360_529160359_12819842_7612736_n.jpg

So yeah, it's a fairly cramped room but it's comfy and is very good value for money. We then got on the Metro back to the Louvre.

30936_10150190922525360_529160359_12819846_3535514_n.jpg

We were hungry and had a little bit of time before the coach was due to leave. There was no way we were going to have McDonalds breakfast three days in a row so we opted for Starbucks which was just across the road. It was expensive (just as you would expect from a Starbucks). I got a hot chocolate (the only hot drink I will have) and some pancakes :D The pancakes were lovely.

31776_10150190922535360_529160359_12819848_746515_n.jpg

After our little breakfast we headed to the coach. As the instructions are a bit vague I decided to take a step-by-step photo example of how to get to said coach :P

Look for red entrance opposite the Palais-Royal Metropolitan exit
30936_10150190922540360_529160359_12819849_7534166_n.jpg

Walk through door (make sure you open it first)
30936_10150190922550360_529160359_12819850_2639221_n.jpg

Follow the lady in the random lady down first escalator
30936_10150190922560360_529160359_12819851_2868403_n.jpg

Through the next glass door
30936_10150190922575360_529160359_12819853_1646640_n.jpg

Down the next escalator
30936_10150190922580360_529160359_12819854_6143894_n.jpg

walk across to the next escalator
30936_10150190922590360_529160359_12819856_4784166_n.jpg

And walk down the previously mentioned escalator
30936_10150190922605360_529160359_12819857_661263_n.jpg

You come across random parade of shops, walk past them
30936_10150190922625360_529160359_12819859_2396444_n.jpg

You now find yourself in a hall looking at an upside-down pyramid, lol and then go right, as Benin suggests..
30696_10150190922795360_529160359_12819863_5702854_n.jpg

Go down the corridor with a coach sign attached to the wall

30696_10150190922810360_529160359_12819865_3791483_n.jpg

Go down the random corridor
30696_10150190922815360_529160359_12819866_2744120_n.jpg

Look out for the Charles V corridor (marked on the wall below another coach sign)
30696_10150190922830360_529160359_12819868_7021161_n.jpg

You now find yourself in a massive hall with ruins either side, head to the end of the hall where you'll find, yep, you guessed it, more escalators
30696_10150190922835360_529160359_12819869_4334623_n.jpg

Yep, now go down those escalators
30696_10150190922840360_529160359_12819870_5688573_n.jpg

You'll now find yourself looking blankly at some vending machines. Turn around to your left and find some flashy lights. Those flashy lights is the counter where you buy your coach tickets, the coach sits behind the counter.
30696_10150190922860360_529160359_12819873_5788908_n.jpg

So yeah, I slept on the coach again and somehow woke up as we were turning off the motorway hehe. As we arrived into the coach car park our hearts sank when we saw LOTs of coaches, I didn't count but it was definitely over 10. As you can imagine, another busy day ahead.

However we had ridden pretty much everything we wanted the day before so it was just a day to relax and re-ride what we liked most. We headed over to Zeus which had already gained some epic queue so we looked behind us and this quaint little water ride for kids had no queue so we amusingly went on :P

The ride attendant was lovely and you could tell she loved her job. The ride just gently floated us round some random theming and back into the station. Pleasant but it just made us feel more tired lol.

So after that we joined the long queue for Zeus, well, we knew it was worth it. It took around an hour but it just looks so long...

Well after the epic ride on Zeus (near the back, of course) we opted for one of the other shows. This was the comedy stunt show in the Roman arena near the front of the park. On our way to the show we heard the Roman Legionnaires used in the show marching in our direction. They then stopped and interacted with guests before continuing on to the arena where they entertained the audience by singing and dancing to a woman in the crowd lol.

The show is really good fun and I found it more entertaining than I did when I saw it back in April. I think it's because I understood what was going a bit more this time round. It was also highly amusing when they used stupid amounts of smoke, you could barely see what was going on.

After exiting the show we wanted some foodage. The queue for the burger place opposite the arena was quite long so we had a wander to see what else was available, unfortunately, just hot dogs and sandwiches everywhere else we looked which we didn't want as that's what we had the day before. We was near the dark ride Transdemonium and it had a minimal queue so we opted for that. It's so random and you can't really tell if there is meant to be a story or not, very bizarre ride.

After exiting the attraction we were faced again with the issue of where to eat. We decided to just go back to the burger place and just wait in the queue. We eventually got served but the queues hardly moved and the staff seemed quite useless, bar one or two. We eventually got served and sat down at a table. Patrick's burger was very under cooked in the middle and so he went and complained yet he didn't seem to get very far with them, they took the burger and didn't give him a replacement. While that was going on Benin and I were entertained, once again, by the Roman Legionnaires. They marched through the restaurant and then stopped to sing and dance to someone sitting outside at one of the tables. It was hilarious and it just added so much to the day. So food :( , entertainment :D

Patrick was now running out of time as he had to get to the airport. He had enough time to do one more attraction with us. We all opted for Cesar as it is so amazing (well, we were also next to it and the queue wasn't too long).

Still love this attraction, it doesn't get boring even on re-rides. The pre-shows are just fantastic fun and the ride at the end is just awesome.

Well Patrick now had to say goodbye so we walked with him to the exit and said our goodbyes. We then wandered round the shops to see what we wanted to buy at the end of the day. After our little peak through the shops we went to see the main stunt show again :D I took a few pics and a video clip this time...

Such an awesome show, the effects and stunts are just fantastic and there is so much humour in there. Love it!

We were now running against the clock now too so we decided to get one more ride in on Zeus. There was still a long queue and at times it felt like it wasn't moving much. However we did get on it and in the back row. It was absolutely mind blowing. That first drop was insane, we just got flung over it and it wasn't till half way through the tunnel that our bums hit our seats again, the amount of air time was just immense. The rest of the ride was full of air time too and it was just flying round the track, just epic.

We didn't have much time left so we went to the shops, purchased what we wanted (I got some books and this epic pillow of win) and headed to the coach. For once I didn't actually fall asleep and Benin and I had a long conversation about our love of Asterix, Disney and Chessington. Once back at the Louvre we had several hours to waste before check in for our coach back home. We wandered around the area and then found somewhere to eat.

We finally opted for this expensive looking American place. We were greeted by a lovely waitress who seated us underneath the massive TV which was playing the Germany match (it was actually an awesome match, well what we caught of it anyway). I went for Duck with rice and salad and Benin went for ribs with potato wedges and coleslaw. The food was amazing and also very filling. It was just a great choice as it was a nice relaxing place with friendly staff and amazing food, will probably go back there when I'm next in Paris :P

We then headed back to Galleni for the coach. After some time waiting for it, it finally arrived and we realised a massive group of Americans were joining us on our journey. They were female uni students that were very loud and whiney, not the best kind of female American when getting on an overnight coach.

However the journey wasn't too bad apart from both border controls taking an age to get through (all non-UK resident got a mass of questions thrown at them at the UK border control and all bags had to be scanned at France border control). So after some sleep we arrived back in London's Victoria station at 5:55 in the morning...yay, only 7 hours till I had to be at work

Overall it was an awesome weekend. Shame we couldn't ride Zeus more but we never felt the need to rush around and we were able to take in the park's atmosphere and theming and just enjoy ourselves. The rides are great fun and the shows rival the ones at Disney parks. The humour through-out the park is just awesome and the character entertainment is top-notch. Oh I love Asterix now, might make it one of the parks I try and visit on a yearly basis. Thanks for reading (hope some of you managed to get all the way through) and all comments are highly appreciated. :D
