Opinion (controversial?) Bobbejaanland: Horse Pedalo should count, for those who count coasters

I had an excellent day today at Bobbejaanland, I may write it up, but suffice to say I think Fury is amazing.

I do have a slightly tongue in cheek query. I understand that there is always some debate about what is and what isn't a roller coaster. But I do query why Horse Pedalo at Bobbejaanland doesn't get a listing anywhere. Whilst the ride type is listed generically as a pedal monorail by vekoma, it has a large lift hill. You pedal to the lift hill, then no power is needed. The remainder of the ride then slopes back to the station round a reasonable sized course. It is possible to coast the whole thing, barring perhaps a little pedal power back into the station. The park describes it as a tour ride. But that can't be determinative surely? It rolls, it coasts, it's on rails, it can be done on gravity from the lift hill. Isn't it a roller coaster?1000025565.jpg

I mean, you raise a good point. There's not really that much difference between this and, say, Zooooooooooooooooooooom at Flamingo Land (amount of o's from name reduced for sanity reasons).

But I guess for me, the cred counting rule I go for these days is "Does it look like a cred? Does it feel like a cred?" If I say yes to both of those, it's a cred. From what I remember when riding Horse Pedalo a decade ago, my answer would be "No" to both of those. So it ain't a cred (for me)

See, I don't have this dilemma of "is it a cred or no," because I just didn't ride it.

That's a path I'm not sure I want to go down, so just avoid it all together.

I rode it because it was quite big and I was quite intrigued. Also, checking on things my daughter might enjoy as I try and gently encourage her in the direction of rides that don't just go in a circle slowly! I quite enjoyed it but wouldn't be going on it again unless with her in tow. I guess it lacks the thrill requirement of a roller coaster but then, so do lots of kiddie coasters that people seem happy to count 🤷‍♂️.

For you, sure. But only this one time!

The simplest common definition of a roller coaster is:
  1. A propulsion system to get you to the highest point(s) of the ride, a la lift hill, launch, etc.
  2. Gravity-driven motion throughout the layout to create roller coaster sensation, such as g-force.
  3. A braking or safety mechanism device to slow the ride carriage at varying points during the ride.
By this definition, and if you indeed never think of touching the pedals to get the carriage back to station, you just experienced a roller coaster. But similar to how the handbrake irks some on defining alpine coasters as "pure" roller coaster or if a powered coaster ever experiences true gravity drive, your mileage may vary on how confident a definition you apply.

Personally, I generally try to stick to is the spirit of the ride a roller coaster, or something else? Super qualitative, but can also help guide with these mushy areas where, technically speaking, it's a coaster.

I say count it, and never mention it to another coaster enthusiast soul. ... like I did with Buffalo Hunt in South Dakota. 🥲

I had a very polite response from Duane at RCDB and their view is essentially it's because it doesn't coast uphill, only down, as well as taking the park and manufacturer descriptions into account. Fair enough, I get that!

Back in like, 2011 or 2012 during a CF Live we got a chance to do a walkthrough tour of Flying Turns at Knoebels and I counted that as a credit cause I was "on" the ride.

Something like this, count it too. Have fun with your credit list. If someone spots it and questions then you got a conversation going.
