OCMD: A short visit to Jolly Roger + Trimper's

I had a full day off from work, my partner was out of town, and the weather was nice. Might as well ride some coasters. In fact, might as well ride some new coasters, since there are a few places within a short drive from Philly that I have yet to explore, and the road to 500 is not necessarily easy.

I have about 8-9 hours to work with before I need to be back to take care of my partner's dog. Ocean City, MD is somewhere that I've never ventured for coasters. Considering the 3 hour drive each way, would fate and time allow me to acquire all 7 credits in one trip??

I arrived at around 1:10 PM, found a sick free parking spot on the street, and head right for Trimper's Rides. The southern parks opened at 12:00 PM, and the larger Jolly Roger park opened at 2:00 PM, so I had about a half hour to knock out the 3 credits in the area before driving 10 minutes north. Unfortunately, Tidal Wave's train was valleyed after the loop before the chain lift (a very interesting feature to see, no catch car for the reverse drop). I figured it wouldn't be opening soon, so I ran to Jolly Roger At The Pier and did...

Looping Star - a Pinfari looping zyclon. It's definitely a ride. I hadn't done one since Python in OCNJ way back when I was a kid. Not too rough, not particularly fun, not a bad start to the day.

I head back to Trimper's and don't see much progress on the boomerang, so I just hop on...

Spinning Coaster - SBF Visa, 6 laps around for some reason, not terrible

At this point, it was almost 2:00 PM. I had to decide if I'd wait it out and see if Tidal Wave opens or run up and hit the other Jolly Roger. I normally wouldn't be crushed missing a boomerang, but in this case it could be the best ride of the day, and I really was hoping to get every coaster and eliminate the need to come back anytime soon for credit purposes. I decided to drive north and hit the other park.

I arrived at Jolly Roger Amusement Park at around 2:15 PM. Every ride was staffed and running. I was mildly surprised since the park seems a bit out of date and borderline run down on the surface. After walking around a bit, I realized that it's in decent shape overall, it just has an old fashioned feel. This is a bit of a different vibe from the other boardwalk parks I've done like Morey's, Playland's, Coney Island, and Santa Cruz. I realized I could get on all 4 coasters in like 10-15 minutes, and I did just that.

Barracuda - I hadn't been on a Flitzer in a long time. No restraint, solo ride, not particularly fast but still a really fun time.

Wildcat - Only my 2nd Schwarzkopf Wildcat. A really great ride! I sat in the back row. Awesome airtime descending on almost every hill. Butter smooth. Way better than the one at Adventure Park USA. Can't believe it's over 50 years old.

Orient Express - Didn't even realize this was here til the day before I went. I have Palace Playland in my plans for the summer as well and was bummed that I'd be missing a credit there. It lives! It's also a riot. The turn is so ungodly tight, you get whipped to the side super hard if you're in the back of the train. Unironically a great time.

Wacky Worm - Don't be like me and sit in the back row of a car realizing after it's too late that the front row has way more room. Barely fit but I fit.

Alright, it was maybe 20 minutes later. Time for a quick bite at a sandwich shop then going back south (in the opposite direction of my house...) in the hopes of riding a boomerang. I got there a bit before 3:00 PM. I saw it testing when I got there and was immediately hopeful. Yes, I made the right move, they were just about to open it. I waited around for what felt like a lifetime while they proceeded to purposely valley it again, winch it up the chainlift, walk both lifts, and send it back to the station. After that was done, the station became quiet for a decent chunk of time. Seeing the clock hit 3:45 PM without any progress, I'm wondering if I really risk leaving this dog too long to ride a boomerang.

Finally by 3:50 PM, life comes back to the station and they start testing some normal cycles. 6 test cycles and some waiting around later, by 4:05 PM, I finally got a ride on...

Tidal Wave - It's a boomerang and it's not a bad one. I like that it has the old Arrow trains for history but not comfort. I was more focused on holding my belongings in my pockets during the cobra roll, may or may not have gotten a neck chop.

Finally, I left the premises at like 4:!5 PM and completed the OCMD gauntlet. 7 credits in 3 hours, bringing me up to 465 total coaster credits!

Overall, the collection of rides is unique and solid. There's definitely no stand out attraction, but I had a really enjoyable time and genuinely had fun on 5 out of 7 coasters. I wouldn't be surprised if I don't come back for a long long time, but I wouldn't be opposed to coming back in the coming years because I know I'll enjoy myself. There are probably several non-coasters that I'd do on a return trip.

I'd rank the coasters of OCMD as follows:

1. Wildcat - Jolly Roger Amusement Park
2. Barracuda - Jolly Roger Amusement Park
3. Tidal Wave - Trimper's Rides
4. Orient Express - Jolly Roger Amusement Park (for real)
5. Looping Star - Jolly Roger At The Pier
6. Spinning Coaster - Trimper's Rides
7. Wacky Worm - Jolly Roger Amusement Park
