Notorious

What do you think is the most notorious ride accident of all time?

I'd say my pick for three would be

1. Mindbender Derailment
2. Fujin Raijin II
3. Wild Wonder Rollback (Ocean City)

Dragster's cable break hit the headlines pretty hard. Kingda Ka also had a major accident while testing.

Accidents are easily forgotten, especially by the GP.

The first two you listed are the two I would have said, along with the girl who got her legs cut off on the drop tower at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom. All accidents are horrible though obviously, but when I think of coaster accidents, it would be those three that would come to mind first.

^Yeah the GP really took to the girl's legs cutoff, but back in 1998 the Wild Wonder accident was like totally shocking to the GP.

^^I actually hadn't heard about Dragster's Cable Break until a week or so later... But Kingda Ka had a very nasty incident druring normal operation when the ride had a rollback, and some of the brake fins malfunctioned.

I Witnessed the incident on The Chiller druring its final operation, when coming back to the Cobra Roll, the wheel came loose, causing the ride to stop hard and ride to valley. It was actually kinda shocking. I had been standing by to watch the LIM spike and it just happened right there. Only a few people were injured I believe. But whenever a ride does not execute as planned, even if you are spectating it is somewhat startling. Although rollbacks are not as startling...

Furai 2 pretty much killed the park (as well as on guest). Not only had the park been going for 30 years and ,from what I've gathered, had no other incidents.

One single ride, killing one single person which then takes out an entire 30 year old park? That's got to say something.

Also dunno bout the other 2 incidents so thats why I chose the furai thingy.

What about the wheel flying off of Steel Dragon 2000, it closed the ride for 3 years.

^^ Yeah Fujin Raijin II was a major incident ESPECIALLY because of the media. And it shows the media had a hand in it because the Mindbender crash is one of the worst coaster incidents of all time, and that ride is still in operation.

However on FuRai2, Expoland went under investigation and it turned out their maitenance was S***

Ah, then I have heard of that one then. I remeber the theme park hospital thing we used to have ages ago in the joke section with a picture of that crash.

Hmm, probably the Big Dipper at Battersy Fun Fair in 1972.

The fun fair's most spectacular ride was a rollercoaster called The Big Dipper, which opened in 1951. It was of wooden construction and suffered a major fire in 1970. It was permanently closed down in 1972 after five children were killed and thirteen others injured in an accident on 30 May 1972 when one of the trains became detached from the haulage rope, before derailing and falling 45 feet (14 m) to the ground.[3] The lack of a main attraction led to the decline in the popularity of the fun fair and its eventual closure in 1977.

Not only did it kill five kids, it plunged 45 feet and led the the closure an entire park. yeah, that's pretty notorious.

It's notorious B.I.G.!

are we going by the most well known incidents? or by total impact it's had on the park?

because in the second case Ian wins.

Also wasnt there an incident on California Screamin'?

most well known incidents.
aside from like the Mission Space disney world ones, i mean if someone looses a nail at WDW its all over the freaking news.
and yes Cali Scream crashed

Locally (and recently), Xcelerator's cable snapping and hitting a 12 year old kid was a huge deal. Even though he didn't suffer anything major, a ton of the GP turned it into "Yeah this kid died on Xcelerator". Plus it was closed for 7 months, which is a pretty big deal for a year-around park.

Not even close to being the biggest accident ever, but it's a scary one.

The park was on its last legs before the crash. The accident was justthe final straw. It probably wouldn't have lasted more than a couple of years anyway.

In terms of the UK, other than the Battersea coaster, I'd probably say the incidents involving PMBO when it first opened. If I remember correctly, nobody was seriously injured, but the fact that the "world's tallest coaster" had crashed made for serious reportage at the time.

Did it fall or just roll back and crash into the station? I was 10 at the time this happened and remember I was very wary of lift hills for a while - didn't stop me going on a woodie that was at Cleethorpes though but it was always on my mind every ride that summer.

Battersea almost destroyed the park industry in the UK, and was so well known, that it led to the closure of a lot of wooden coasters in the UK, which in turn led to the closure of the parks.

People also became very wary of coasters. I certainly remember my grand parents and parents telling me of the deaths and the dangers of riding coasters.

I think it had a pretty huge impact on the country at the time, especially considering the lack of news coverage at the time. It's not like today where everyone is wired.

Bazpa, it did roll back into the station. The lift cable snapped and the rollbacks either didn't work, or it didn't have any. It dropped backwards into the station and collided with the second train there.

Just remember, just because it's not well known now, doesn't mean it was always unknown. If it had happened at the same time as the Mindbender incident, it would have been much bigger news and much more remembered.

The kids seat flicks forward when they stop.

^I never noticed his chair moving forward before, why does that happen?

Could have been terrible if someone larger was in the seat, crushing them into the lapbar.
