Hi folks,
I posted on here a few months back (before xmas) enquiring about your views on current roller coaster. I asked for help and to fill out my 13 point questionnaire.

Alot of you sent back replies and for that I am very grateful.

But I would like you to know I have now finished my degree at Coventry University and I have posted my finished animation on Youtube.

The link is...

Please click the HD button to see it in all its glory. I look forward to your comments.

Regards,
Rick

As amazing as your animation is, i feel the ride experience will be far too extreme for most people. The random individual dropping on the lift looks brutally frightening.

I couldn't quite make it out for sure, but i believe the extension arm things go out and in for certain elements to change how they feel, this is a nice idea if it were smoother, less sudden.

Also the coaster looked pretty fast. I think the first examples of this ride would need to be slower. Maybe with time, people will get used to it and the rides could become more extreme.

I am very impressed with your work, but feel the ideas will have to be tamed down for real riders, at least at first.

Definitely an interesting concept...

For some reason I saw a lot of Air's advert animation being an inspiration for the look of the ride and area...

Great job overall though...

^Pretty much.

Of course, people from the 60's looking at todays rides might have thought 'too extreme' too.

Thanks for all the comments...

Although yes the ride is extreme, I dont see why it couldn't be achieved. Its only a concept at the end of the day and im not a engineer so it probably is crossing the line a tad when it comes to bearable G's.

The coaster would also give the riders the choice of the dropping arms at the station before they got on the train, so the less daring of the general public could also enjoy the ride.

Iv really enjoyed working on it though, and understand it has its flaws. Hopefully Vekoma or B&G will hep me iron out those flaws to get it made hahahhaa

I think the video was meant to be more of an animation/advert type thing, so the coaster is exaggerated, like they do on park maps and stuff. Obviously it wouldn't go that fast in real life...

I love the random dropping of people, but they make the cars massive, which in turn would lead to more support etc, but if they have done it on X, then it should be able to work on this... they just look a bit clumsy - how about having the people to the sides of the rail so that the poles can be stored half above the rail when the person is in the up position?

Also, it's a great gimmick, but as inverse says it needs to be used throughout the track more, maybe after the lift, they develop some kind of preset thing (also like X)

I haven't been on X though but I've heard good reviews...

EDIT: Oh hadn't realised you posted again... did you mean the vid to have cartoony g forces or was it meant to be an accurate representation?

I like the concept of the ride!

And the animation work was stunning! Amazing job on that!

Hmm.... this was a great concept, but I think a few things definitively would have been scrapped if the coaster was to be built: Namely, the loops. If the forces wouldn't kill the riders, it would kill the trains, the wheels, and/or the track. Flyers aren't built for outwards loops.

However, awesome animation.

The whole project from start to finish is meant to be just a concept, so can be a little OTT, however, I have also tried my best to make it as realistic as I could. So Banjo, ye is meant to be an accurate representation not cartoony G's.

The problem is Im a designer first and foremost, the engineering and especially physics side of things takes a bit of back seat, hence maybe its a tad unrealistic.

The actual mechanism of moving the seats in and out is supposed to be quite random, hence keeping the riders on the edge a bit. It is also primarily controlled by ones inertia, so each rider gets a slightly different experience round bends etc... but ultimately controlled by computer which operates a very simple rack and pinion type mech.
Also the rider if he/she chooses, can request the seat isn't released at all, before they embark.

Another point which makes it unique is that it isn't actually a roller coaster to the truest sense off the word. I fully expect to get some frowns and slating from what comes next... But I believe future designs and the current industry can only be pushed forward by crazy concepts...

So this "roller coaster" actually uses MagLev technology in its arms instead of wheels.

But before I'm slated I'd like to point out that Magnets are already being used, in terms of LIM's and also magnetic brakes, but Iv taken it one step further by making the whole thing magnetic.... hence why the train is so big, and the seats are far away from the track, to protect the riders.
MagLev is also maintenance free because of no moving parts, and also doesn't generate friction with the track, so less energy is lost, so faster/further the train can go.

remember though, its just a concept ;)

The animation was amazing and the coaster looked pretty cool! I feel like it would be pretty brutal though and those random drops on the lift hill would incredibly scary. Also the restraint system looked like it could be uncomfortable, but overall really good job!

It's a weird concept and I don't think your animation would do it justice. The track looks a bit to cartoony and snappy.

Sick animation. I can tell how much work you put into that, epically for your degree.

But the trains would be a mechanical nightmare. Take X's for example, and those are just half as complex as yours are. (Not to mention the G's stressing the arms of the trains while in action.)

Not to say that it's couldn't be pulled off, but it's going to take years upon years of work.

Vary cool concept though and good luck!

Theres a plugin called "glider" which allows for real physics when animating something like this. I have it for 3D Studio Max and I think it's available for Maya as well?

New Coaster

That would definatly allow for more freedom for the riders.

That was pretty remarkable. It was unique, futuristic, and would be pretty enjoyable in real life. It must've taken you quite a long time to make this!

And welcome to CF, cedarpointttd!
