Lake Compounce & Six Flags New England

Hutch

Strata Poster
Our original plan unfortunately couldn't work out since Lake Compounce wasn't open this week. :( So instead, we took our trip over the weekend, and went to LC on Saturday, and SFNE Saturday night and Sunday morning. So anyway, here we go for my first trip report!

Day 1: Lake Compounce

My dad woke me a little before 8 AM, had a quick breakfast, and left about a half hour later. The park would open at 11, so we made sure we would be there before they let people in.

I warned my dad about what some of you guys said about how Google Maps would get us lost once we were there. Once we got there, I realized how small the park really was. I mean Zoomerang even made it look tiny! We weren't sure where to go from there, but a park worker who was out on the side of the road gave us a little piece of paper that guided us to the parking lot. I thought it was kinda silly that there wasn't an entrance to the parking lot right there, but we had to go all the way around anyway.

My dad decided to do preferred parking, and we parked right next to the entrance. I really liked how the park looked as soon as we entered. I thought Wildcat looked pretty cool in front of the tiny little huts. I wanted to strait to Boulder Dash, but of course my dad had to make a quick bathroom break before we went anywhere. :x Boulder Dash was the ride I was looking forward to the most this year, so I was pretty annoyed that my dad chose to go to the bathroom now. I waited about two minutes, and it was time go :)

We walked up to Boulder Dash, and the queue line was pretty much a walk on for our first ride. There were a few people in line for the front row, and some other people in waiting near the back. I didn't want to ride the back just yet, so we went into the second car. My dad really likes wooden coasters, and he like this one even more because of the way it goes through the forest.

Boulder Dash
My first ride was awesome. For some reason, I thought that looking up a lift hill that lead into the endless woods was more intimidating than looking up a lift hill the goes up in the sky. I didn't feel any airtime on the first drop, but that was because we were sitting near the front. Our train picked up a lot of speed, and I felt like this train did NOT want me on this ride ;). The airtime was gorgeous but insane at the same time. The turns were amazing, and the terrain around us was beautiful. There were moments during the ride where I slightly lowered my hands to avoid a random tree branch breaking my wrist. During the first half of the ride, favorite part was this one airtime hill that was after what seemed to be a double down. That hill had airtime that lasted the longest; I was out of my seat for at least 2 seconds. Eventually it was time for the turnaround. It was probably the most intense turn I've ever been on! The lateral g's were amazing, and the turn never seemed to end! Right after that was another one of my favorite parts of the ride: 5 or 6 bunny hops in about 3 or 4 seconds! After a couple of more airtime hills, the ride was over :( . But the line was still pretty short, so we did it again! :D

I did a total of 5 (not in a row) rides on Boulder Dash throughout the day. Each ride was better than the last. We did a front row one time, and a back row another time. After my 5th ride, I realized that it was my new favorite coaster. Though it wasn't an instant #1, it did take the spot after a little while. 10/10 <3 My favorite parts were that one awesome hill in the first half, the intense turnaround, and the series of endless bunny hops!

The line for Boulder Dash actually did fill up though, but it wasn't too long. They were only running one train though, but that didn't really bother me as much as it should have. The ride ops were also pretty good. One of them sort of sang a little improv while busting a beat with a plastic cup, and the lyrics were all the little safety precautions and whatnot about the ride, etc. That got everyone in the queue line fired up and excited.

We were waiting in line for my 4th ride on Boulder Dash (it would've been my dad's third ride), but at one point they weren't letting anyone on. Apparently something happened to this African-American guy who had just gotten off the ride. He kept lifting up his shirt, as if something had scratched him, but we weren't sure what happened. A police officer was there and so was a doctor, and eventually the ride operators shut down the ride and told everyone to exit the queue. My dad asked what was going on, but I tried to tell him that ride ops don't give us any info, which was exactly what happened. Fortunately, Boulder Dash opened again about a half hour later (which I thought was surprisingly quick). We figured this would be a prefect time to ride some of the other rides. We headed for Zoomerang.

Zoomerang
Wasn't really excited for this one. This was my second Boomerang (Flashback at SFNE being the first), but it was alright. I didn't get a lot of headbanging, and going backwards is fun. I liked it a little bit more than Flashback, but I didn't like the color scheme and the name (Zoomerang? Really? :P). Meh. 6.5/10

Up next was Thunder 'N' Lightning. Only one arm was running, but it was still a walk on. Skyhawk was the only other Screamin' Swing I had been on, and I loved it. Thunder 'N' Lighting wasn't nearly as good though, but it was still fun. It was just too short. The ride was pretty much over after one big swing. 7/10

We noticed that Boulder Dash was open again, so I did my 4th ride on that. We did front row this time. It was awesome.

My dad wanted to get some lunch, so we got each got some hot dogs. Bleh. They were pretty bad. Free drinks were nice though. After that I wanted to do Down Time. My dad doesn't like drop towers, so I did it by myself.

Down Time
Not my favorite drop tower, but it was still fun. It offered a pretty nice view, and the drop is always fun. It's just that the fun part is really short, but that's pretty normal for drop towers. 7/10

Next was Wildcat, which is now the oldest roller coaster I have ever been on.

Wildcat
From what I've heard, this ride is pretty rough. I wasn't sure if I was going to like this or not, but I ended up liking for what for what it was. The line was about ten minutes, and they were only running one train, which wasn't really surprising. During the ride, the first drop and the first turn surprisingly wasn't so bad. I thought to myself "So far so good." Then we hit the next turn and BAM, we experienced intense lateral g's we weren't expecting. That was probably the worst part. It was still pretty rough throughout the rest of the ride, though I still liked it. It looks nice, and I like me some classic woodies. I probably would've gone on it again if Boulder Dash was still closed. Overall, another 7/10. Besides Mean Streak, all the other woodies I had been on were better than this one.

My dad wanted to leave pretty soon, so he let me do my 5th ride on Boulder Dash. Awesome as usual. My dad said I was gone for over 30 minuntes, but to me it seemed like the queue wait was around 20 min. Still worth the ride though. (And BTW, my dad doesn't mind waiting on a bench while I'm riding some random coaster. He choses to pace himself and not do 5 rides in a row. :P)

My dad wanted to get going, but I quickly wanted to check out the Kiddie Coaster. I couldn't get the cred though, as I did not have a small child with me :(. But the kiddie cred looked like the saddest/silliest little coaster there is.

We finally left the park, after having a great time there. I felt kind of bad for not checking out some of the other flat rides like the Enterprise of the dark ride shooter thing, but I really liked the park. The park was pretty, and was clean, it was in a cool location (right in a big valley), Boulder Dash was awesome, free drinks were awesome, (although food was not awesome :P). I really want to return there next year.

We got in our car, and drove to our hotel, about 45 minutes away. That night we would be going to Six Flags, so I still had something excited to look for.

Glad you loved Boulder Dash! Look forward to SFNE because I have some pretty poor opinions of it and love reading what others have to say or think. Good job.

Yeah, as I said, Boulder Dash was epic. SFNE will be up soon. I'll try to get it up later today. Logging in has kind of been strange for me lately. I was actually halfway through writing part two, but then I previewed it and it asked me to log in :? So I lost all that. :( But I'll make sure it's about by tomorrow at the latest.

It took almost two years of riding it before taking my #1 spot and it's still there four years later.

Day 1 1/2: Six Flags New England

After hanging out at our hotel for about an hour and a half, it was time for SFNE. It was about quarter to 6. I've never done two theme parks in one day before, so that day was a pretty neat experience. Conveniently, our hotel was 5-10 minutes away. We arrived at the parking lot, and it looked like the park was still pretty crowded, but there were hundreds of people leaving. I was hoping the lines would get shorter as it was the second half of the day, but I was wrong. It was a Saturday, so of course the park was packed. I really wanted to get a night ride on Bizarro, but sadly, that didn't happen. :( But I did get a +1 though! :D

Since we would be spending two days at the park (Sat night and Sun morning), my dad decided to buy each of us season's passes, since they were cheaper than buying two tickets for both of us. The girl who helped us redeem our passes mentioned that it was a pretty slow day with not a lot of people, even for a Saturday. Of course, she was lying.

We decided to ride Bizarro first, since that was the only thing that I really wanted to do.

Bizarro
Bizarro is probably my favorite-looking ride. It's just so beautiful. The layout is unique, the paint on the track looks fresh, and the trains are one of my favorite.

Anyway, we ended up waiting an hour and ten minutes! I couldn't believe we ended up waiting that long. I don't like waiting more than a half hour, but since all the other rides at the park had long waits, Bizarro was the only ride in the park where I would wait that long. The line probably could have moved a little quicker, but the ride ops were pretty slow. Eventually, we made it into the station and got in line for the back row. I had never ridden back row on Bizarro, so I was pretty excited. It was probably one of my favorite rides I ever had on the ride. Airtime was amazing, speed was great. It was still as epic as I remembered. 10/10 Not as good and and wild as Boulder Dash though. And I remember having more fun on TTD and Millennium Force than this. Still great though.

The line for Bizarro had gotten longer, so we decided to do something else. I wanted to go on Gotham City Gauntlet; I remember I had fun on that last year. My dad decided to let me do that, while he takes a break and goes to get a beer :drinking:. But the line for the wild mouse looked like it wasn't worth it, so I decided to go on Catwoman's Whip instead and get the cred.

Catwoman's Whip
Wasn't expecting much. It sucked. The ride ops were DREADFUL. They were the slowest people in the world. They would slowly start letting people on a 40 person train, and as soon as the train was half-filled, they would just stop letting people on and stand there, doing nothing. It couldn't have gotten any worse. I ended up waiting about 15 minutes for what should have been no more than 5 minutes. Anyway on to the ride itself.

The entire train could barely fit in the station, and it was longer than the lift hill. It kind of slowed the momentum down whenever it traveled over a small hill. The seats had no padding and weren't that comfortable, and it made me grateful that Arrow loopers had padding . It's also pretty loud. I was trying to think what that sound was when I was waiting in line. It sounded kind of like a tornado a mile away, but I realized it was actually the train running. It wasn't as loud as an awesome B&M roar, where you could here it from across the park. But it seemed pretty loud for a tiny coaster. Overall it was a 3/10.

After that we decided to have dinner. My dad wanted to go to this one place that didn't seem to be where the map said it was (we just had trouble finding it :P). My dad gave me some money to get something while he got something else. The food was ridiculously expensive. One slice of pizza was $10, and a soda was $4.25! I wasn't sure why I was spending this much money for a lemonade when I could be getting free drinks less than an hour away at Lake Compounce! Another thing that was annoying was that I couldn't get a cap for my drink. I asked one of the guys why but of course he didn't tell me anything.

I met up with my dad and we ate. He got a pizza as well and also got nachos for the both of us. The nachos sounded like a good idea, but it wasn't. It was on a tiny plate, and it was one of those types of nachos where the cheese was pretty much a liquid, yuck (And it costed 12 bucks!! ). At least the pizza was good though, along with the French fries.

By now the sun had gone down and it was dark. After dinner I almost went on Scream, which I had never done before. It looked like there was a single line, but I wasn't sure where the entrance was. I asked one of the ride ops who was working at Scream, who sounded like she was from Germany, but she had no idea. The line for scream looked like it was 20 minutes, and since I had already down Down Time earlier that day, I decided to skip it. My dad and I did Thunderbolt next.

Thunderbolt
I had a lot of fun riding this during my trip last year. My one ride during this trip was ok. Ride ops were assigning everyone seats they didn't want. We waited about ten minutes. We actually should have waited a little longer but eventually one of the ride ops asked for two people to come up and ride the next train. Under different circumstances we would've said no, but, even if it had only been ten minutes, we were tired of waiting. Unfortunately our seats were right in the middle of the train, so we got no airtime. At least we were in the dark though, which made it a little more fun. :| While we were on the lift hill, someone behind us was pointing at something on the ground to our right. I peeked down and saw this giant rat/rodent/thing scurrying around. I wanted my dad to see it (he hates rats  ), but the rat ran under the lift hill before he could see. Now back to the ride. Last year I would've given it an 8/10, but now it's a 7/10.

Next up was Cyclone.

Cyclone
Despite the fact that Thunderbolt is 40+ years older, Cyclone is still in bad shape! I remember that it was the roughest coaster I have ever ridden. This time was even rougher! I liked it better than Thunderbolt though, since it was more exciting. The line was also less than five minutes, and it was the first time I had ever seen two trains running at once. We rode in the back row (mistake? ;)). For a few seconds, we even got stuck on the lift hill, but that didn't disappoint me. When we left the lift hill, we experienced insane/wild/rough ejector I had never felt before on this ride (and this wasn't the first time I had ridden back row on Cyclone). The first turn was so rough and fast that I couldn't keep my hands up. The rest of the ride was pretty rough as well, just like I remembered. 7.5/10

By now it was probably some time after nine, so our last ride of the night was Goliath.

Goliath
It was about a 35 minute wait, and we were just able to get on before the park closed at ten. Going up the vertical lift hills are really fun, as well as the cobra roll. But it wasn't a good as I remembered it. Last year I would've gave it a 9/10, but now it's an 8/10.

Afterward, it was time to go. I was pretty tired after a long day of walking around, so I was excited to get some sleep. Though we didn't really need another day, we decided to go tomorrow anyway we had our seasons passes. I figured I'd get a few more rides on Bizarro, and I also wanted to go on the woodies again.

TO BE CONTINUED...

Time to wrap this report up:

Day 2: Six Flags New Englang (Again)

If we didn't have those seasons passes, I would've been just fine going home right in the morning. But since we had them, we figured why not?

After breakfast at our hotel, we checked out and left at around quarter to ten. We drove to the park and, this time, my dad parked in the preferred parking lot. I wanted to get plenty of rides of Bizarro in, so that's exactly what we did.

Bizarro
I rode it four times in a row. The line wasn't too long. Each time was of around 20 minutes, which wasn't too bad (for Bizarro that is ;))
First Ride: 2 Row
Second Ride: Back Row

The back row is significantly more fun than the front rows. More intense airtime, but the front is still great. After our 2nd ride, I did two more by myself. What was really annoying was that the single line didn't start until you get into the station, instead of starting ride at the beginning of the queue. So I had to wait another 20 minutes each time.

3rd Ride: Lucky me I was able to get another ride in the back row and rode with another kid. It was the kid's first time, and we had a nice conversation.
4th Ride: Middle of the train. Airtime was still good, but not as strong as the front or back.

Overall the ride is still awesome.

Up next was Gotham City

Gotham City Guantlet: Escape From Arkam Asylum
Unlike the previous night the ride was a walk-on. The theming isn't bad, and the lateral g's and little drops are fun. Nothing special about it, but it's not a bad ride. 6.5/10

After that was just a lot of walking around. I took a lot of pics and movies of some of the coasters. Mind Eraser and Batman had waits that were about 20 minutes, which weren't really worth it. I remember Batman being real boring and forceless, and Mind Eraser's an SLC. We headed over to the other side of the park. Everything else seemed to have 20+ minute waits, including Flashback, which is always a walk-on. If the line for Flashback was shorter, I might've gone on it, just to compare it with Zoomerang. Goliath looked like it was 30 minutes, Pandemonium's line was long as usual, and Cyclone's line was slow as well. When we went inside Cyclone to check the queue line, the entire structure looked like it was about to collapse. As the train went over one of the hills, it shook the hill a little too much, side-to-side.

Eventually it was time for lunch. Food was expensive as usual, and the lines for all the sandwiches and whatnot was just brutal. Apparently everyone wanted the chefs to make their own custom sandwich which wasn't on the menu, which explained why the line was so long. We had lunch, and my dad wanted to get going. I checked the park map and wanted to quickly go over to The Great Chase. I always thought that you needed a little kid to go on with you, but apparently not!

The Great Chase
Only one ride op running the ride, so I was pretty slow. I was wearing sun glasses on the ride, and the ride op warned me that if I lost sunglasses, I wouldn't have been able to get them back until the next day. I didn't say anything, but I was kind of annoyed by her statement. 1: I wore my sunglasses on Boulder Dash the day before, so there was a fat chance that I would lose my sunglasses on a kiddie ride. 2: Even if I did lost them, it would've been pretty stupid that wouldn't be able to get them back, especially as we were leaving afterward.

The ride itself: it was fun for a ride that lasted ten seconds. I liked it better than Catwoman, but still pretty lame. Everyone riding would get a big jerk whenever the chain lift started pulling the car, which was the most exciting part. 4/10

After that we left. I decided that Lake Compounce was a much better park than SFNE, mainly due to the ride ops, prices, and beauty (and Boulder Dash! ;)).

IMO, SFNE is an ok park. It has Bizarro, that's it. While most people who attend the park may not care about the coaster line-up, I (and every other coaster enthusiast) do. At SFNE I got slow wait times, awful ride ops, ridiculous prices, and meh rides. I hope SFNE gets something good, like a nice B&M. Even a Batman: The Ride clone will fit nicely. I'll probably end up returning to SFNE next year anyway though, because (I'm pretty sure) my new school takes a trip there every spring. :)

While both parks only have one amazing coaster, it's worse for SFNE because it has much more average coasters than Lake Compounce.

But overall, I had a fun weekend. I went to a new park, checked off some new creds at both parks, and got a new favorite coaster. Lake Compounce was awesome, Boulder Dash was awesome, free drinks were awesome, Bizarro is still awesome. It was a good trip. :D

Good report. I went to SFNE and Lake Compounce back in May 2011, which was probably just a few months before I started to consider myself an enthusiast. At the time I was more someone who just liked going to theme parks. I thought Bizarro was great, but I find it difficult to rate against other coasters I have ridden because of the fact I didn't really think to much about it back then. Hopefully, I can get back on it soon as I love the european Intamin mega/mega-lite coasters.

I remember thinking Cyclone was probably my second favourite in the park. Even then though I was enough of an enthusiast to know that riding the back row would backfire :) . So I stuck with the front and it became my fav woodie (beating Nash), until the day after when I rode Boulderdash. However, I eventully came to my senses and put Nash above it when I rode it again later in the year.

Didn't spend much time at LC as we stupidly came on one of their education days and the park was packed to the point there was absolutely no where to sit whatsoever. I only got to ride Boulderdash once and like Bizarro I would like to ride it again soon, so I can rate it more accurately.

Did you not do Batman: Dark Knight or did I just miss it when reading your report. It's nothing special I know, but It would be rude to skip a B&M :) .

I bet you'll really like it as it seems your a fan of those Intamin Megas! Hopefully I'll be able to get on Goliath and Expedition GeForce sometime next year.

I would've liked to do Batman if the line was no more than ten minutes. I found Batman pretty dull and somewhat short, and I didn't think it was worth the wait :| . Yes it's the only B&M in the park (sadly), but it's actually one of my least favorites.

Oh, and sorry for the double post :), but I meant to do this at the end of my report:

Total Ride Count

Boulder Dash: 5x
Zoomerang: 1x
Thunder 'n' Lightning: 1x
Downtime:1x
Wildcat: 1x

Bizarro: 5x
Catwoman's Whip: 1x
Thunderbolt: 1x
Cyclone: 1x
Goliath: 1x
Gotham City Gauntlet: 1x

^Thanks! ;)

One last thing: I took some off ride shots of some of the coasters at SFNE during our trip. I'm pretty new at this, and I'd like to get some feedback and here what you guys think. The vids were filmed with an iPhone 5 (I don't have a professional video camera :)) As you can probably tell I can't really hold the phone steady, but I did my best!

Mind Eraser:

Goliath:

This one was probably turned out to be the best IMO (since it's the only vid of these three that showed off the entire ride :P)

Bizarro:

Unfortunately there were also some random people in some of these clips that ended up disturbing the video. Ah well. :)
