Kid asked to stop winning reading contest

In a problem most of us will never have, a 9 year old has won 5 straight reading contests.

The Library Director, in typical new age fashion, is trying to strong arm the kid into quitting, to allow the other kids a chance to win.

I can rant about this for a while, but I will leave my opinion with, if the other kids are not good enough they should try harder, bringing the star down is Socialism 101, and this country is suffering a huge case of it.

So, what do you think, should this kid be forced to stop winning?

A 9-year-old who has won five straight reading contests at a New York library now has a new challenger to his throne – the library’s director, who says the young reader “hogs” the contest prizes each year and should “step aside.”

Tyler Weaver, who starts fifth grade in September, won the “Dig Into Reading” contest at the Hudson Falls Public Library this summer by reading 63 books from June 24 to Aug. 3, the Post-Star reports.

Weaver said he felt “great” that he won the contest again, winning prizes such as an atlas, a water bottle and certificates of achievement.

“Everybody he tells, he gets high-fives. Everybody’s so proud of him,” his mother Katie told the Post-Star.

Everyone except the library’s director.

“Other kids quit because they can’t keep up,” Marie Gandron said, adding that she considered changing the rules of the contest so prizes are given to children whose names are pulled out of a hat instead of reading the most books.

But Gandron says she won’t change the contest now that Katie Weaver has come forward to the Post-Star with Tyler’s accomplishments.

Lita Casey, a library aide, called Gandron’s plans to change the contest “ridiculous.”

While I agree that the competition, if it's a competition, should allow for the kids to compete - I complete disagree with the awful, biased, one sided reporting.

So I'm going to leave making an actual comment until I've actually seen a fair report of the situation.

I agree the source can be a bit right winged. I have seen similar articles on the subject on Yahoo! and CNN, however.

All the articles are from the one source, so they're all exactly the same. I'm waiting for a follow up, or for an official statement from the librarian. At the moment, it's pretty much hearsay and hyperbole.

No. If the kid is going to win, he's going to win. They are asking him to "forget everything you know and be dumb like the other kids so they can have a chance".

The winner's are the winner's and in life nobody is going to say when hiring for a job "Well, I like this guy better, but he has worked here before and I want to give the drug addict a chance."...

This actor has one a Grammy Award 5 years in a row! but re are going to rig the voting because we want to give the worst actor in the world a chance to get one...
