So I just finished reading what TPR have posted so far about the IAAPA roadshow for 2010, the full thread can be found here:

I'll just let you guys browse through it and then let the discussion/speculations begin!

PS First page, S&S stand (the photo with the 4 seat across train) what the HELL is that thing in the background, it looks sexy =D

Well, there's certainly some things that caught my attention. First, how about these wheels WITH lights in them?? :D :D

Those would look absolutely amazing at night on a coaster, but not sure how they'd keep them off during the day, and on during the night :?

I liked those too, but it made me think why has it taken until 2010 for these to be developed?!

Also on the 'OMG' list: High-5 coaster.

Could always run off a dynamo, that way they wouldn't have to turn them off as it's almost 'free' energy.

If you watch the video they explain that this is the case.

If you check the video out Sally have some pretty interesting stuff up too, ice to see other companies using the Toy Story Mania gimmick and working with it even further.

Checked out that report this morning, pretty cool.

Some of my favourite things to mention are the 'High Five' woodie (that looks awesome), the lap bars for Afterburners (which I hope we see soon on some in the UK) and.... I can't remember the other thing.

The Sally Corp booth was very impressive, usually is though.

Oh! It was those waterslides, some of them just look insane.

Larger variety of products to appeal to a larger crowd. Same reason why some other companies have been developing more coaster products.

Can anyone give me a good reason to build either one?

I think there's a lot of pressure to have the "world's first" or "only" ride type. so manufacturers are looking for that vital unique selling point to get the trade. I agree with your views on the potential pointlessness of it, so I suggest it's done for marketing weight not thrill value.

Straw is a very good building material actually. And less damaging to the environment than steel.

Is it more structurally sound than steel?

To some extent I'd imagine it would be, but otherwise, not completely.

But it's just like everything: People like to create new ways to make money. Probably the main reason they're doing it is to make themselves more profit, and to offer a wider variety of products to make themselves money.

A launched....wooden....shuttle

I never thought i'd hear those words together when not talking about NL.

Hell, a launched wooden shuttle could have big potential to be a good ride, however the straight out and back model I have seen doesn't have high hopes, not with me anyways.

A GOOD shuttle could be a twister style, so you get to experience the ride both forwards and backwards. THAT would be an amazing ride, especially at night.

I could see a smaller park investing in this... the GP will eat up a launched wooden coaster I bet. It has a small footprint, very narrow, perfect for like the edge of a park, bordering a parking lot or roadway.

Well, as Morwenna Angove said at the Th13teen thing, woodies don't research too well as the 'GP' tend to associate them with being old and unsafe (I presume, however, this is different in the States, as there are a lot more modern woodies, here we only have traditional wooden coasters and a good'un right the other side of Wales that nobody's ever heard of). Stepping into the minds of those with this trial of thought, a launched wooden coaster would just seem odd, a shuttle being extraordinary, and I can't imagine it being an amazing selling point really.

Maybe somewhere in the US (which I presume you were talking about?) where people are familiar with wooden coasters being modern and are just as familiar as 'steelies', but I can't see the concept hitting reality in the UK at all. If a majority of people researched by Merlin said that they consider woodies unsafe, I'm not sure how they'd feel being launched off in one then going backwards.

Ha! Just as a side note, when I typed "launched shuttle woodie" into Google this came up.

Except to make money, you actually have to sell the product. So I ask again - what on earth would make a park buy something like this?

It's a bit of a niche idea, but I could imagine a launched wooden coaster being the perfect ride system for a Powder Keg style theme or similar....The wooden coaster would give the rustic feel, and the launch would go along with whatever story they were trying to tell.
