Films where the sequel is better than the original

So I'm sat here watching Fievel Goes West and it's just SO much better than An American Tail, which is odd because usually, especially with animation, sequels are terrible!

So, any other examples? Not including trilogies/sagas etc.

Rubbish. American Tale is a gorgeous piece of art - Fievel Goes West has some really ropey animation and is quite low budget and low effort compared tot he original. It's got a faster paced story, but it's not got the heart or soul of the original!

Evil Dead 2 is better than the original (is that classed as a trilogy/saga though?). Terminator 2 as well is better. Erm... I'll wrack my brains for others...

It's not being miserable you divvy. It's very rare when a sequal surpasses the starting movie cause it boils down to either a rehash, like the saw, Friday the 13th and nightmare on elm street and the like, and you've already been there and done that or you get a complete genre change like Aliens and Evil Dead 2. In those you've still got the underlaying horror sub genre but it's their tone changes, of action flick and slapstick repectivly, that makes them stand out from their prequel but ultimetly makes them difficult to compair to one another without whineing over a biased preference sci-fi thriller vs sci-fi action in the case of Alien.

There's a third case where comparison between movies of a franchise is completely retarded when each individual movie is part of one long plot arc, LoTR, Kill Bill, Harry Potter and Back to the Future.

One more thing, in cases like your American Tale vs Fievel goes west where the sequal is obviously not going to come close to the original. An American Tale is a grim, dark and unhappy (then nightmare fuel with the great mouse of minsk) movie with tremendous amounts of effort put into and it's obvious from the get go that you're not getting that from Fievel goes west. So you just take it as it is and go along with it's simplicity and stupidity. It's not wrong to have more fun with it that the original. I mean I'd take that over feeling depressed for an hour then 5 minutes of heartwarming happiness the majority of the time but the original is still a masterpeice for attenpting to put you in the state it wants to make you or something.

I dunno. I rambled. Point being general consensus is sequals aren't as good. Doesn't mean they're out right bad, just not as good unless a miracle comes along or the plotnarc is deviced to be split across movie to tell more of a story.

Oh yeah, I did this on my phone so you're going to have to live with typo's.

Aliens is a better action movie sequel to Alien. And Evil Dead 2...

This topic is, silly

You're silly. Aliens is a dreadful sci-fi suspense movie sequel to Alien :p

See, Fievel goes West is better for me purely because of the music score. It's just so so good in my opinion, whereas An American Tale just didn't have that. I do really enjoy it, and I love the grim side of animation, but it just didn't give me that warm fuzzy feeling that FgW does ;]

Shush Joey, Toy Story 2 is fab! :p

Also, Phil, shuddup Evil Dead 2 is an obviously crap video nasty!

Evil Dead is a schlock horror comedy that is as over the top as it could be with limited budget.

Evil Dead 2 is almost a parody, nay, pastiche of the original. Taking everything that the original had and improving it exponentially, while at the same time still taking the piss out of the original. The comedy and wit are sharper, the story stronger, acting better, effects better and scares much more frightening. It's almost a remake, but it's still a follow up and still much better than Evil Dead. The mood and style of the film doesn't change that much between the two. It has simply immatured a little ;)

Then it goes massively downhill for the abysmal Army of Darkness.

You also don't address the Terminator films, where both are the same genre, but the second film is quite notably superior to the original.

What about Silence of the Lambs? It's a much better film than Manhunter (though Manhunter is a cracking film and better than Silence's prequel Red Dragon).

Mad Max 2 is a superb film, while the original is a bit bland. Nice idea, but dull.

Star Trek: Wrath of Khan (KHAN) is not just a little better than ST: The Motion Picutre, but in an entirely different league.

That'll do for now ;)

It was going to be my example of sequels being in the same genre but managing to be better. I just forgot to actually write it in... Herp.

furie - Can't believe you didn't mention that Godfather II was the best of the trilogy. Hell, probably the best sequel ever!
And what about The Empire Strikes Back & The Dark Knight? Both are clearly superior to the originals as well.
I'd even go as far to say that most people like Spiderman 2, Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom, Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets, X2: X-Men United, & even Die Hard 2 - Die Harder! more than their predecessors.
There's also The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, which is the best of Leone's & Eastwood's Man with No Name trilogy.
Can we also count Bourne or Bond movies? Supremacy is a better Bourne sequel & do we consider From Russia With Love & Goldfinger as sequels?

Temple of Doom was pants :(.

Wrath of Khan was better than the 1st film.

Needless to say Aliens.

Dark knight.

Temple of Doom is indeed, awful.

Dark Knight is the most obvious.

Terminator 2, X Men 2, Spiderman 2, The Bourne Supremacy, Batman Returns, Home Alone 2, Avengers, Hellboy 2... It's mostly comic book films to be honest, because the first film lays down the "legend", and then you get to the good stuff. And then Spiderman 3/X-Men 3 happens.
