Ellen DeGeneres's Oscar selfie becomes most retweeted tweet

November 2012 America saw one of it's most closely contested election campaigns between incumbent Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. Obama won and consequently tweeted the following tweet:

It received over 780,000 retweets (something one does to post someone else's tweet on their timeline). Before that only One Direction's Niall Horan had reached anything like that figure, and even then it was under 400,000 retweets.

Fair to say it was going to take something exceptional to beat the 780,000+ from Barack Obama but I expected it to come from someone like a One Direction member or Justin Bieber. Alas, it came from Ellen DeGeneres at the Oscars. She took a starstudded 'selfie' (taking a picture of yourself) which included Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lawrence, along with others.

At it's last count it has received over 3.1 million retweets. That's over 3,100,000 retweets, completely trouncing every other tweet several times over.

It comes at a time when people are beginning to say that social media is becoming old hat. On the contrary my friends. This shows that the opposite could not be truer. 3,100,000 retweets is no mean feat and shows Twitter is more alive today than it ever has been before. To prove, and have what opinions you will, pop sensation Justin Bieber welcomed his 50 millionth follower over the weekend, a little while ago Katy Perry welcomed her 51st millionth and both of their 'follower-bases' are growing daily.

Never underestimate the power of Twitter, it's only a matter of time before the next big milestone is crossed. 10 million retweets perhaps? 100 million followers? Only time will tell.

Thanks for the maths lesson. :p

I mean, I was going to come in here and post an utterly pointless post along the lines of "cool", but I must say I have to commend you on the efforts you've gone to in padding out the post with details.

Bunch of celebrities posing at a pointless awards ceremony. Yeah, I can see why that would appeal to the average Twitter user.

I agree - Jordanovichy is becoming the new Ollie.

A "selfie" is a picture of yourself that you took. Not 10 people huddled together that is taken by another person. That is called a picture.

Re: Ellen DeGeneres's Oscar selfie becomes most retweeted tw

^FYI - Bradley Cooper took the photo of himself and there is no limit on the amount of people that can be in a "selfie".

Re: Ellen DeGeneres's Oscar selfie becomes most retweeted tw

^ That might be true, but I've checked the photos that I took on my phone and my phone doesn't feature in any of them. Most people only care about the actors - people who memorise words and pretend to be somebody else - rather than what it was taken with. Either way, I'm sure this Ellen woman is chuffed to bits with this record.

And this silly "selfie or not" debate. It is a "selfie" but the people who memorise words and pretend to be somebody else "photobombed" it. See, I know all the cool words. I down with the kids, me. Booyakasha!

I can imagine you doing the finger click as well ;)

3.4 million RTs now, I heard some critic or whatever mention it might reach 5 million but I can't see that now.

And that whole thing about Samsung planning the whole thing, what utter bull ****. The picture on that site is the only one you can actually see it's a Samsung. I don't know why people have to come in and constantly see the bad side of everything. The picture itself, no one is going to look at it an immediately think 'oooh I must go and buy a Samsung'. Just ludicrous.
