November 2012 America saw one of it's most closely contested election campaigns between incumbent Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. Obama won and consequently tweeted the following tweet:

It received over 780,000 retweets (something one does to post someone else's tweet on their timeline). Before that only One Direction's Niall Horan had reached anything like that figure, and even then it was under 400,000 retweets.
Fair to say it was going to take something exceptional to beat the 780,000+ from Barack Obama but I expected it to come from someone like a One Direction member or Justin Bieber. Alas, it came from Ellen DeGeneres at the Oscars. She took a starstudded 'selfie' (taking a picture of yourself) which included Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lawrence, along with others.

At it's last count it has received over 3.1 million retweets. That's over 3,100,000 retweets, completely trouncing every other tweet several times over.
It comes at a time when people are beginning to say that social media is becoming old hat. On the contrary my friends. This shows that the opposite could not be truer. 3,100,000 retweets is no mean feat and shows Twitter is more alive today than it ever has been before. To prove, and have what opinions you will, pop sensation Justin Bieber welcomed his 50 millionth follower over the weekend, a little while ago Katy Perry welcomed her 51st millionth and both of their 'follower-bases' are growing daily.
Never underestimate the power of Twitter, it's only a matter of time before the next big milestone is crossed. 10 million retweets perhaps? 100 million followers? Only time will tell.
