Americans love their guns and innocent bystanders pay the price. Lucky that it struck her in the leg instead of a vital organ.
A 20-year-old Seminole woman visiting Busch Gardens was struck by a stray bullet fired into the air during New Year's Eve festivities Wednesday night, police said.
Kaitlyn Jacobs was sitting in the Gwazi Pavilion area around 11:50 p.m. when she felt pain in her lower left leg. She was assisted by Busch Gardens Medical Services and transported to St. Joseph's Hospital, according to Tampa police
X-rays showed a bullet lodged in her leg, according to Tampa police. There were no other reports of injuries at the theme park.
Busch Gardens spokesman Travis Clayton said it appears the gunfire came from off the premises.
The incident is yet another reminder of how dangerous firing weapons into the air can be.
Several agencies launched messages this week asking people not to fire off guns as part of their New Year's celebrations.
In 2012, a stray bullet came down and pierced the skull of then 12-year-old Diego Duran as he watched fireworks outside his family's home in Ruskin. The bullet traced diagonally through Duran's brain and left him comatose for days.
The boy, now 15, has recovered after multiple surgeries and his family has made a mission of spreading awareness about the danger of celebratory gunfire through a nonprofit organization called Bullet Free Sky.
Law enforcement agencies were out in force on Bay area roads. They reported about a dozen crashes, including a man on a scooter being killed on Alt. U.S. 19 in Palm Harbor. In Treasure Island, a driver hit a stop sign and then crashed into a yard in the Isle of Palms neighborhood.
Neighbors said they heard a loud boom and expected to see much worse than what they found.
Treasure Island police say the driver passed a sobriety test but was ticketed for the crash.

A strange incident! The women was very lucky.
I do not understand why someone would fire a gun into the air to celebrate New Years, a glass of bucks fizz is the much safer option.

That is the most **** redneck thing I've ever heard, I only thought people fired guns into the air in celebration in The Simpsons? Also, how in the hell did they manage to get a gun into the park?!

^Apparently the gun was fired from outside the park.

But still, Jesus, as if people do this!

I don't get it either. Sadly, this happens every year here which usually results in 1-3 people dead every year. Luckly, no one was killed here this year.

First time hearing this happening at a theme park. Very lucky woman indeed!

Such a shame. Guns cause nothing but trouble.

Except they don't. It takes a person to pull the trigger, guns don't point themselves in the air and fire when they want to or point themselves at someone and pull the trigger.

I thought about giving examples of how wrong your statement is, but realized it isn't worth my time, and this isn't the place for it.

Shame yet again someone got hurt by a weapon that should not have been in a persons hand to pull the trigger. True you cannot blame the gun.

Why they are not illegal in this day and age is beyond me.

They should be illegal. Yes, they don't shoot themselves, but having a gun in your possession gives people temptation. It also makes some people feel invincible and like they have more power than they really do.

American's say they need guns for self defence, but in the UK nobody has them and look, nobody dies from idiotic ways like flying bullets and random shootings.

And if one really wants to make some noise on New Years Festivities why not simply loading blanks???

This is mostly about some gun owners are more stupid than a loaf of bread...

Again, talking about the smallest minority of gun owners. Anyone with a **** brain knows what goes up, must come down, and also knows not to shoot a gun in the air for no **** reason. Tampa isn't known to be an intellectual hub.
