This topic is devoted to "backmasking" songs, for those of you that don't know, that's playing a song backwards and getting messages from the words, and most backmasked songs are said to have "satanic messages".

Now there are many backmasked songs out there. There are "unintentional" backmasks such as the hugely popular "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin

Led Zeppelin has said that they are not satanic and this was purely a coincidence.

And then there are "intentional" backmasks, such as Revolution 9 from The Beatles, which further continued the "Paul McCartney is dead" hoax.

Or "Empty Spaces" by Pink Floyd

So what do you think about backmasking? Leave all your opinions and maybe other backmasked songs here. Are they elaborate hoaxes, an illusion of the mind, or in Stairway to Heaven's case, purely coincidence?

I'm not sure. I think it could go either way.

It could be people wanting to hear something in the song which makes it seem believable. I mean, some of it is a bit hard to distinguish and I question whether it would be noticeable at all without the lyrics.

Having said that, you never truly know. The Led Zeppelin song does have that very odd verse in it. Granted, I don't know the meaning of the whole song, but that one verse does seem a bit out of place and when played in reverse it does appear to give the most obvious meaning.

I'm still not sure to be honest. I'm not going to select an option, because neither reflect how I think about this. I always think this every time the topic comes up. I don't think we'll ever truly know, so let people have their little fantasies. As long as people don't take it too seriously, then I see no harm it in. It's just a bit of fun anyway.

^ The meaning of Stairway to Heaven is that there are two types of roads you can take. As the backmask shows, you can take the wrong road and end up with Satan in hell.

While the actual song, means you can take the road on the Stairway to Heaven, hence the name. And I also agree that it could really be an illusion of the mind, making people hear what they're told, but who knows?

^That's what you interpret it to mean though really isn't it?

That's pretty interesting, I doubt though that I would have been able to pick out any of the words without the lyrics.

^ See that's one of the things. What if the lyrics made it an illusion? It may be putting words in your mind so you expect to hear it, and that's what you're mind makes of it.

Just found more Beatles backmasked:

If you are wondering about the "Paul is dead" things in it, this is a good source: http://www.paulisdead.co.uk

Quite possibly the most talked about rock conspiracies of all time.

Coincidence. Funny, and slightly disturbing, but coincidence all the same.

Most of them don't sound anything like what people claim they do.

Yeah, we're all gonna die.

Actually they're more like a less funny and less silly misheard lyrics video that don't actually require much effort to make.

The way these sorts of things work (I think) is somebody listens through the song and tries to work out how the lyrics could sound like something (like Satan etc.) and then when it's shown to somebody else, they hear what they're told to hear. It's one of those strange human nature things that if you're told to hear something particular in an indecipherable sound, you can hear it as what you're looking for.

You forgot Britney Spears:

In the song One More Time.
"Sleeeeeeeep with me I'm not too young."

^

Speaking of which supposedly she's had a backmasking thing herself.

And Jayjay I totally agree with you.

Judas Priest proved in court that it's all coincidence.

If you are told what to expect to hear, then you will hear it.

If you don't watch the videos and just listen without expecting the words, then you'll never hear them - it's just a jumbled mass of noise.

Judas Priest won a court case held against them as it was alleged the backmasking of one of their songs told two kids to kill themselves. essentially, the judge said - "what a crock of ****".

Judas Priest said
Judas Priest said:
if we wanted to insert subliminal commands in their music, messages leading to the deaths of their fans would be counterproductive, and they would prefer to insert the command 'Buy more of our records.'

Experts also reckon it's a crock of ****.

Audio engineer Evan Olcott said:
Messages by artists including Queen and Led Zeppelin are coincidental phonetic reversals, in which the spoken or sung phonemes form new combinations of words when listened to backwards. Olcott states that "Actually engineering or planning a phonetic reversal is next to impossible, and even more difficult when trying to design it with words that fit into a song."

This will not stop Taylor from believing in it mind ;)

Erm, it should be pointed out that some bands HAVE done this deliberately, but when they have - they hold their hands up and say "yes, we did". Including some bands who have done it to take the piss out of the whole backmasking thing.

Pink Floyd's one is deliberate...as if you here it backwards someone goes "your wife is on the phone".

furie didn't the words in that song get used in a competition during the PULSE tour? To win a VW Golf?

It's from The Wall - "Empty Spaces".

I think it says something like

"Well done for finding this message, to win your prize please call somebody at somewhere"
"Roger, your wife's on the phone"
"Okay!"

No prizes as far as I know, but it was a deliberate piss take by them.

I believe them. Santa is also real and I <img src='http://www.coasterforce.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_censored.gif' /> the tooth fairy last night.

Actually, it IS real.

It's very easy to do, too.
Say the subliminal message I want to say is "cheese", I'd say the word into a computer and play that backwards. I'd then think of a matching word that sounds like the backwards played subliminal...

I've done it, I can make you one right now.

^I'm sure you can, with one word. I'm not saying it's impossible, but try to make an entire verse work, and rhyme, in reverse. It'll need a lot more work.

People seem to be agreeing with me on this too. It's what you want it to believe.
