I made a topic on this a longgg time ago, back around when I first joined, so I decided to make another one. Today, I was required to make two essays on a controversial subject, so I decided to choose this. I had to make one essay for it, and one against it, and even though I knew before writing them that I agreed with it, it never occurred to me HOW much I agree with it before I tried writing the one that disagreed with it!

In the end, I think it's totally right and needs to be legalized. I don't get why we are allowed to kill our kids through abortion and stuff, but we aren't allowed to make our own decision as to whether we want to die ourselves. Besides, it's dignified, stops the pain, allows the family to be by your side, and lets everyone say goodbye (which, not saying goodbye, for a lot of people, is one of the most painful things when it comes to the death of a family member).

The only point I could come up with for "against" was simply the fact that people may start abusing their right to die, but if it is strictly to be used only for those with terminal illness that have a hopeless prognosis anyway, I don't see the problem with it.

So what do you think? Assisted suicide, yay or nay?

Roger Federer, Toblerone, the Pope's Security and Assisted Suicide - just some of the MANY reasons which make Switzerland awesome! :p

We do it to animals...

That's my arguement

In seriousness, it's all about the state of life of the person, I remember many a RE lesson talking about this, and the usual arguement against it is Steven Hawking, he's managed to keep going even though he's getting worse...

Therefore how do we know when it is right or not to take the life of a person earlier when they still have some potential (obviously varying from person to person, but this is with Hawking in mind)...

For me if I got to the stage where I couldn't move or do anything, then I would say stop me, because it's not worth it, yes I could get better, but what if I didn't? I could do something else, but what if I didn't and remained in a hospital bed for another year or so which could be used by a younger patient in desperate need a transplant or similar...

The main reason there's so much arguing over this is of course the state of the person who's life is in question, but if it were me, I'd rather go nicely (if there is such a term for death) than really long and painful...

I don't think it's right when the person who would be killed doesn't have a say in the matter, when another family member steps in and calls for it.

I am totally, 100% for Taylor's assisted suicide view

Only if they were going to jump anyway :p

You can't just push random people.

Ed raises an interesting issue though. If assisted suicide were to become legal, would it then be OK to just hurry up the process on the top of the bridge and stop them milking the moment? ;)

^ It's not like he didn't know the cushion was there.... he was just speeding things up :p

I agree with the legalisation of Assisted suicide.... If someone wants to end the suffering they are going through with a degenerative disease or such but are unable to end things themselves, it's robbing them of their rights to say 'they can't'.

I'm for it. If I was brain dead/no chance to come back.. i'd tell my kids/family to pull the plug. I'd rather be dead/help someone else with my organs than sit there as a waste.

And I'd rather be dead than sitting there.. old and rotting. Not who I am.

^I'd want to go.

It's a very controversial topic, and I don't think it can easily be answered. I can see the points from both sides, however there are more points on the 'for' side. Like Snoo said, I know I'd want to go if I ended up in a state like that.

Having said that, I wouldn't want to go by injection... I'd want to fight a bear, however difficult that may be.

I don't think I can put an answer, I'm thankful I've never been in a situation were I've needed to consider it, and I hope that I never am put in the situation. Right now for me it's a case of 'out-of-sight-out-of-mind'.

Then you'd have to have been in a car crash and immdeiately died unfortunately. Thats why organs are so rare, its rare for someone, who is an organ donor, to die in a car crash without ruining most of his organs.

However, yes im all for it. Euthanasia is the thing I want if i get Alzheimers or any other really degrading disease, I never want my children or grandchildren seeing me go mad.

The Terry Shiavo case a few years back was one of the cases where it should not have been allowed, because if the person dying doesn't have a say, it's not suicide since they are not deciding to end their own life. I'd say that's more like compassionate murder, which isn't acceptable to me.

Having said that, I wouldn't want to go by injection... I'd want to fight a bear, however difficult that may be.

I don't think it is done by injection, I think it's a gas.. Or at least, the first machines used for assisted suicide were a gas. I dunno if they switched to needles.

EDIT- Nevermind, I guess they switched to potassium chloride needles, though I could have sworn I read something about some sort of gas.

^ Humanely as in half cooking them and then poking them with a stick?

Thanks for the name, Taylor, I knew there was a big case about it, I just forgot who it was.

Yes! People taste like Bacon apparently so I have to make sure they're crispy.

Who ever said I was dieing in a car crash Mr. Futureman?

I should hope his brakes do too.

(the person above me cowardly changed his spelling of the word brake to make his correct)
