A worldwide phenomenon is catapulting into the North of England this spring, as Lightwater Valley Theme Park, North Yorkshire, confirms that it will be home to the UK’s latest Angry Birds Activity Park, opening late spring 2013.

As only the second Angry Birds Activity Park in the UK, the site will cover over 30,000 square feet and represents a total investment of over £1.0 million.

The Angry Birds Activity Park will combine the digital world of the game with the physical world, through activity-based play, which will encourage visitors to move around and be active.

The Activity Park will be complemented by an Angry Birds retail store selling a wide range of Angry Birds official merchandise from pencils to back-packs to plush toys.

The Angry Birds Activity Park has been designed and manufactured by Lappset UK. A leading provider of play equipment, the Kettering-based company launched the Angry Birds concept last year which creates a new healthy way for the whole family to experience the Angry Birds theme. The attraction is aimed at the whole family, allowing toddlers, children and adults to play together.

Mark Bainbridge, General Manager, at Lightwater Valley, comments:

‘We are delighted that the global phenomenon that is Angry Birds has landed at Lightwater. We feel that the new activity park is a really good fit for us as a leading family attraction – and what we really like is it will get children and adults alike active whilst having fun together. Its opening will mark the start of an exciting programme of developments, which will improve and diversify the theme park’s offer and reinforce our commitment to providing quality leisure experiences for the whole family.’

Lightwater Valley is committed to working in partnership with local businesses and organisations to support the growth and value of Yorkshire’s visitor economy.

Angry Birds has been downloaded over 1 billion times across the world, and last year it was the most popular paid-for app on Apple’s App Store. The game, now also available across different platforms, is played by millions of people every day.

Further detail on the Angry Birds Activity Park will be released after Easter.

Woohoo! Bandwagon - quickly! ONTO IT!!! ;)

Erm, yeah, new play area which is always nice I suppose.

Being less cynical and annoying, Maxi-Minor_Furie will think it's heaven on Earth :)

If by 'encourage visitors to move around and be active' they mean pushing a fat kid into a crowd of midgets playing jenga, I'm all for it.

Are there any other play areas at LWV? This was my main criticism of the park when visiting with my two year old last Spring so this is very welcome.

I do feel the Angry Birds thing is a bit dated now though.

Yep, there's a sand pit by the Caterpillar coaster and I think some kind of play area. There may be another by the Ladybird, but I can't really recall.

No other play areas in the park except for that crappy sandpit. I think this is vital for the park in the long run, if they had a generic play area installed, no one would think twice about it, but since it will be themed to a brand which kids can relate to, it should work wonders.

TV/film-tie Themed play areas are successful - Thomasland, Peppa Pig World, Harry Potter Crapland - so hopefully it'll work well for LWV.

Even if the Angry Birds brand is losing it's appeal slightly, this will get national coverage and could eventually lead to an investment more suited to me.

Yeah, good news.

Is this another one of those things that calls itself a theme park attraction but is actually just a park?

^Yeah, I'm assuming this is another one of those contraptions made out of wood with a couple of pieces of plastic dotted about with characters printed on.

I'm tired of the Angry Birds stuff now, it's already had it's day. If this works out well for Lightwater though then I'm happy as I'm sure if popular will help pave way for better and bigger improvements in the future.

Lightwater getting a play area? Excellent news! Great addition.

Theming it to Angry Birds? *sigh*

I'm really not sure that this is going to lead to a massive influx of families, resulting in larger profits and, ultimately, bigger and better things that we might be interested in, but I'll be happy if I'm wrong.

I am getting quite a lot of personal satisfaction remembering the CF Live there a couple of years ago, and the snide comments about Flamingoland having to sell Corkscrew because they were broke. Very unprofessional and bitter coming from a park that took two years to install a second-hand tractor ride because they couldn't afford to pay for the construction, and now following it up with a kiddy play park.

What are Flamingoland doing this year again?

No, this won't lead to better things because it won't get people through the gate. It's a kiddy playground, and not even a very extensive one by the looks of it.

Yeah, it's good to have it for small kids to burn off some energy, but nobody's going to go there specifically, and pay, for something that can get for free closer to home.

It's a nice little playground - I'm not knocking it for that - but that's all it is.

E-mails that have been sent out today saying the area will open 25th May

Bank Holiday weekend? Are they insane? What idiots would open their new investment BHW? ;)

I'll be elsewhere ;)

Looks like a great playground mind and MMF is very excited about going later in the year :)

I think this would be a good investment for somewhere like Flamingo Land and Drayton Manor. Both solid park's with a good selection of rides, and something like this would just enhance the day out for the littler ones.

But at Lightwater, I dunno.... I just feel that the £1m could have been better spent on many other rides/attractions.
