Alton Towers via Train

Thinking of going to Alton sometime this year but sadly as I am a hard up student I can't drive. I know that Stoke on Trent, Uttoxoter and Derby are meant to be the closest, but which one has the easiest way to get to the park via bus after the train ride?

I've used Uttoxeter a couple of times with no issues. The bus is right next to the train "station" (more a glorified bus stop than a train station). Can't tell you about the other stations. Anyone who says you NEED a car for Alton is full of s**t.

I've used both Stoke, and Uttoxeter. I think Uttoxeter felt closer, but there were more buses from Stoke.
Just google the respective bus timetables to the park and pick the station which works better for you.

How much is the bus ticket though? I see that the train ticket from where I am to Uttoxoter is about £20 but there's nothing online about the bus ticket prices (that I can find).

I can't remember now, but not much. Couple of quid?

Hmm that would be incredibly generous, back at home in the south a 20/30 minute bus ride would cost £5 for a return. Seems pretty fair to be honest (especially if the services aren't run by the park).

What would I expect the queue times to be if I went on a Wednesday in the first half of May? (plus compared to a Saturday in the same time period)

Where are you heading from? If you're coming from London ride the West Coast Mainline from Euston to Stoke-on-Trent station. Virgin Trains provides the fastest service using Class 390 tilting EMUs.

Worked out that where I'm travelling from (West Yorkshire), it doesn't matter where I go because the journey time equals out. Uttoxeter seems best for me as there are more trains.

Edit: Working out what day to go again, would the 4th be good? In two thoughts because it is the bank holiday. Or would the Wednesday/Saturday afterwards be emptier?

Mid may is a lovely time to visit the towers, between the two bank holidays, and before the students finish and the school trips begin.
Midweek queues for the bigger rides at this time of year are usually around the fifteen to thirty minute mark,
with the Smiler around an hour or so.
Early hours are often walk on until noon.
My favourite time of year for a visit.
I never go on a weekend, but I imagine the queues would double at that time of year.
May the 4th, as well as being Star Wars Day(!), is the bank holiday, so would probably be busy, but this is never guaranteed, as some bank holidays have been known to be quiet.
I would go midweek if I were you.

Anyone know how long the bus journey is from Stoke? Seems that there aren't any services running from Uttoxeter rail station this Thursday.

Wish I saw this before I got my **** train ticket to Stoke. So does the train to Alton Towers leave right outside the station?

Yes, YOU could. Seriously, there's asking for advice, which is fine, and there's just being lazy.

hmm - Hate to disappoint you, but it looks like the 32a /x32 only stop at stoke station on the way back from AT on sundays!! :(

life's a bitch at times huh?
