Alton Towers nver built famous woodie

Mega Poster
We all know AT & the rest of the Merlin parks (all the rest of the parks in England) will never built a woodie coaster for some silly H&S reason, but when this poster got released, it looked amazing, loads of airtime & unique design.

As all coaster fans know a great woodie like "Troy" or "Fobia" can change the park & increase the people who visit.

The image is coaster fan made I think. I don't think (other than some side elevation plans) that Alton ever released anything officially.

The reason it didn't happen was due to "protected trees" in the valley area.

However, the plans showed it as possibly the greatest wooden coaster ever :(

I'll have to dig out the side elevation plans, so incredible...

It's so incommodious that fires which pave the way for developments only seem to happen in Margate and not Alton ;)

Oh yeah, of course. And it took them two attempts at that too :) ;)

I remember seeing that video a while back. It's a great No Limits job, but the ride doesn't actually look that great

I think that's an animation thing though. In situ, it would be very different.

That looks pretty good!

Shame this never got built, as I think the gardens are a problem for Alton. They can't get rid of them, but I'm sure fewer and fewer people visit them anymore. When I first started going there 30 years ago the parents would insist on a bit of a wander but now nearly all people go there for the rides.

When I went, the gardens were empty, apart from people following the marked route. The only reason I was there was (like everyone else, I suspect), because they hadn't tried the SkyRide yet, which was much quicker.

With the entrance price as high as it is, surely nobody goes just to visit the gardens...

Please do enlighten us on this "Health & Safety" issue that you claim means Merlin won't build a wooden Rollercoaster in their parks. I'm dying to know.

Apparently it's that often uttered stereotype of British people thinking wooden coasters are unsafe.

That, plus Nick Varney say they're not marketable/sellable to the public. Apparently John Wardley has made a few designs for a woodie and really wants one built. But without Varney's permission, obviously they can't be built.

Every enthusiast and their dog wants a wooden coaster, but Alton doesn't care sadly... Personally getting sick of these 'worlds firsts' and 'secret elements', its become a ritual with Alton Towers since Oblivion, and they only do it to draw in the money.

It's a shame because even a 'family' wooden coaster would fit in perfectly with there ride selection, but the odds are 1/20. Alton reminds me of a 'sellout' band/artist; they will only do what the mass majority would honestly pay for. Imagine the average demographic for example, they will most likely be interested in 'The Smiler' branded with it's Record-breaking inversion amount and OTSR (Which usually means 'scary' ride for most), than the 'longest/tallest' Wooden coaster in the UK.

I just hope Alton Towers take note of the USA woodies and their popularity, and hopefully we may get our very own Outlaw Run here in sunny England! But again, what's the odds?

Thats my theory anyways.

You present that as if it's a negative?

For us, it might be. But surely that's the sensible way to go about their business?

Also to be pedantic odds of 1/20 would be hugely in favour :p
