Alpine Coasters Being Added to Rcdb?

TilenB

Strata Poster
Just yesterday I was checking the rcdb's random and secluded sites and stumbled upon Slovenia being added to the tree view and roller coaster search functions. All excited I went to check if anything has been added to it, but it was no avail. With some further checkups, I've also spotted Slovakia, Latvia and Andorra being added to the site as well, which can only mean one thing - Alpine coasters are getting added in the near future! :D

What do you personally think of the matter? Do you see them as legit coasters or rather as Summer Toboggans or some other ride of similar style? I'm more on the side of the second option and can't really see them in a legit coaster compartment, but it would nevertheless be nice to have a listing that is closer than an hour of driving away. :)

I've ridden, uh, 6 of them so far... but I don't count them. On Coaster-Count I have them listed for reference but don't have them add as +1.

Being able to stop them myself and the fact they lack any self powered uphill sections, I don't count them.

Ridden
Dragon's Tail - Labadee Haiti
Alpine Coaster - Wisp Resort - McHenry, MD
Mountain Coaster - Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort - Hancock, MA
The Nor'Easter Mountain Coaster - Attitash Ski Resort - Bartlett, NH
Cranmore Mountain Coaster - Cranmore Mountain Resort - North Conway, NH
Timber Ripper - Okemo Mountain Resort - Ludlow, VT

I personally count them. They are the only ones that aren't on RCDB that I count. I never thought RCDB would add them on the site.

I have been on two.
Nor'Easter Mountain Coaster from Attitash Ski Resort
Cranmore Mountain Coaster from Cranmore Mountain Resort.

I am going to try and hit all the ones in Tennessee this year.

Vermont is under the Tree View as well and the only coaster they have is the alpine CanobieFan mentioned.

I've never ridden one as it goes, so don't know what they actually 'feel' like.

For me, my rule has always been 'if it is on coaster-count, then I'll count it', but ridge riders have put a spanner in the works on that one :P

When I ride my first I'll let you know for sure :P but I should think I'd count them.

If it has wheels, it's on a track, and provides a thrilling experience(Age group dependent), it's a coaster. Ridge Riders don't count. Alpine coasters do. Simple as that.

I've ridden Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster and Smokey Mountain Alpine Coaster, and I count both of them. It's powered at least partially by gravity, it has a lift hill, it runs on a track or dry flume, it spends the whole ride on the track, and it creates a force vector. Therefore I count it.

So, yeah... It has just happened! :)

Does it change anyone's view on them? Those of you that haven't counted them, will you start counting them now? As for me, I still stand at my point and refuse to count them. Same story as with butterflies; manufacturer doesn't brand them as coasters, neither does any of the operators (at least from those in Europe).

^This. The fact that you can control the speed doesn't mean it isn't a coaster, it just makes it a different type to most. Well, that's what I think anyway. I think it's good rcdb count them now, especially since they already counts Butterflies (which are much more dubious), but I still don't understand why certain water coasters aren't counted.

On rcdb's Facebook page:
(Duane) Hey, maybe I should post here from time-to-time. Thanks to lots of help from Rik Engelen, the database now has Alpine Coasters -- 182 of them to be specific. There are 50ish more to add, but those are mostly from places less traveled.

Question: Does this mean I consider Alpine Coasters to be Roller Coasters?
Answer: No! You'll find them listed under their own classification like Powered Coasters.

Question: Will they dominate the record holders report for length?
Answer: No! The record holders report only shows roller coasters.

Question: Is this the last question?
Answer: Yes!
Now those that count them have a listing on rcdb. However, I'm still not counting them.

This gets back to a discussion last week on what "makes" a roller coaster. For alpine coaster, the notion of does it feel like a roller coaster is what makes me side with them not being classified as full roller coasters.

Yes they are powered by gravity. Yes they have roller coaster-ish elements. But no, alpine coasters are a unique experience, holistically outside of the roller coaster experience to me.

I'm really looking forward to riding my first next month. I can then make up my mind whether or not I'll count them...but we all know I will... ;)

^ Go ahead and count them, they so are creds. They have lift hills and coast down hills powered by gravity and they are more credish than those Mack Supersplashes imo.

^ Only that they don't have no uphill sections at all, whereas Mack Supersplashes do go uphill. They so aren't coasters </3

Do they? So what happens if a rider brings the car to a full stop? None of the ones I've ridden had any uphill sections outside of the lift(s). My 'reason' for not counting.
