I know it's really cheeky to ask you lot to help me with my Graphic work, but maybe you're dying to take part in a bit of a survey? If you could just answer the following questions in as few or as many words as you like then I'd be incredibly grateful, and I'll show you my Viral Ad for Thorpe Park Fright Nights :--D

  • What scares you?
What is your favourite horror film?
What is your favourite horror character?
Do you have any phobias? (If yes what?)
Do you think that animation can be as effective in the horror genre as film?
What age group do you think that a horror film or event would be aimed at? (Answer specifically about fright nights if you want)
What do you find scarier; gore, things that make you jump or a general creepy atmosphere?

Thanks again guys, this needs to be in for this Friday so if you want to help me out please do it before then, I really do appreciate it, and I'll owe you one. :)

What scares you?
Not a lot to be honest. I think probably "the invisible assailant". The idea of being hunted by something you can't see (in terms of horror movies). Personally not a great deal, on the same tracks as my previous statement though, the idea of there being things in water when I'm in the sea or a lake/river.

What is your favourite horror film?
Very tough one to answer. Evil Dead II, The Haunting and In the mouth of madness all spring to mind as horror films I enjoy watching over again.

What is your favourite horror character?
The Aliens from Alien et al. Are they classed as a character?

Do you have any phobias? (If yes what?)
Very mild acrophobia and arachnophobia. Nothing I can't overcome though.

Do you think that animation can be as effective in the horror genre as film?
Yes, but I've yet to see one that really works for me. Animation can be an outstanding way of getting across very abstract and haunting ideas though.

What age group do you think that a horror film or event would be aimed at? (Answer specifically about fright nights if you want)
Over 18's so you can get the best films? :p

What do you find scarier; gore, things that make you jump or a general creepy atmosphere?
I prefer a general creepy atmosphere. Gore doesn't bother me at all and I always find that when a horror movie uses things that make you jump, it's a cheap trick (cheap shot). It's never really followed up by consequence and is used as a tension breaker or light relief. The best horrors use it to raise tension very high and then keep the tension paced (Alien does this excellently). I love a creepy atmosphere if it's done well, I like the imagination that goes into creating something that draws you in and keeps you captivated.

What scares you?
Ever since I saw Independence Day as an 8 year old at the cinema I've been genuinley afraid of aliens, or alien horror films! :p Other than that I'm scared of spiders and to some degree I'm scared of heights too.

What is your favourite horror film?
If Independence Day counts I would choose that one. Other mentionable are Alien (the first film), Sphere and I actually fancy Resident Evil (the first one), it got such a brilliant soundtrack that make the whole movie a hell lot scarier!

What is your favourite horror character?
The aliens in Indenpendance Day are freakin scary I think :p

Do you have any phobias? (If yes what?)
Spiders maybe. I think they're dis gusting but I don't know whether that counts as a phobia?

Do you think that animation can be as effective in the horror genre as film?
Do you mean like an animated movie? If then, no.

What age group do you think that a horror film or event would be aimed at? (Answer specifically about fright nights if you want)
Adults/old teens.

What do you find scarier; gore, things that make you jump or a general creepy atmosphere?
A creepy atmosphere and especially good sound effects are important!

What scares you?
Not much but I get nervous about the unknown.

What is your favourite horror film?
Probably Rec (amazing film)

What is your favourite horror character?
Jigsaw :p Or Freddy Kruger

Do you have any phobias? (If yes what?)
Not really. But like I said I don't feel comfortable with the unknown. I've never liked those holes you have to put your hand in to feel what's inside as I'm scared it's going to be something nasty. :p

Do you think that animation can be as effective in the horror genre as film?
Yes as you're not limited to what you can film and animation can be quite creepy if done right. It's not as effective as a normal film though.

What age group do you think that a horror film or event would be aimed at? (Answer specifically about fright nights if you want)
Adults as they're the ones that watch horror movies and enjoyed being scared most. It really depends on the location though. If it's a place young people visit like Chessington then keep them tame but with the right level of scare so adults can still enjoy it but children wont get too scared.
As for places like Thorpe then it needs to be as intense as possible as it's aimed at the teenage and adult market. As long as the attractions are separate and people aren't forced to do anything they don't want to then it's fine. I'd still love Thorpe to do more round the park and do some 'proper' scare zones. Nothing like the lame excuse of one they had last year. :p

What do you find scarier; gore, things that make you jump or a general creepy atmosphere?
Creepy Atmosphere. Gore doesn't bother me and mostly goes unnoticed in scare attraction unless it's full-on (i.e. REALLY gruesome and combining with a strong scent). Jump scares (or impact scares) are effective if done properly but can feel cheap and doesn't always work if the tension isn't built up and it's literally jumping out, shouting "boo", then disappearing again.
A creepy atmosphere is really effective though and is great at making people feel nervous and uneasy about what's coming up. It stays with them all the way through the attraction and also makes it easier to scare them.

What scares you?
In terms of horror films, things that make me jump. Sudden shocks and surprises...BOO! Seeing Vadge in her underwear.

What is your favourite horror film?
It's not my favourite genre, but it has to be the Saw series.

What is your favourite horror character?
Jigsaw. Creepy puppets *shudder*

Do you have any phobias? (If yes what?)
Loosing my eyesight.

Do you think that animation can be as effective in the horror genre as film?
No. I know a film is a film, but a cartoon can only be make-believe.

What age group do you think that a horror film or event would be aimed at? (Answer specifically about fright nights if you want)
14+. Let's face it, kids are desensitised to violence and gore nowadays, so saying 16/18+ has no place in today's society.

What do you find scarier; gore, things that make you jump or a general creepy atmosphere?
Jumpy stuff.

What scares you?

In terms of film/horror attractions, not knowing what's coming next. In real life? The criminally insane, or at least the idea of them.

What is your favourite horror film?

Candyman

What is your favourite horror character?

Candyman

Do you have any phobias? (If yes what?)

No

Do you think that animation can be as effective in the horror genre as film?

No. Ok, so you have fewer limitations when it comes to animation, but the viewer still sees it as less "real" than film and are distanced even further away from the horror because of it.

What age group do you think that a horror film or event would be aimed at? (Answer specifically about fright nights if you want)

Would be aimed at or should be aimed at? Horror attractions for 13 and over basically. Even if they're based on 18-rated films, let's face it, the majority of teens have seen those films. The idea of horror being for adults only is daft. It's teenagers and young adults who are more into that stuff.

What do you find scarier; gore, things that make you jump or a general creepy atmosphere?

Atmosphere.

What scares you?
This is a bit broad, but in terms of movies and horror attractions, it would be the unknown. In movies, such as the Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity, they pretty much always keep whatever the "thing" is, a mystery. We know it's a witch and a demon, but they never actually appear to the viewer. In horror attractions, being in pitch black and just not having any sense of anything or where anything is, is also really scary.

What is your favourite horror film?
Probably Paranormal Activity. I've seen soo many horror movies but none of them have managed to scare me to the point where I had to sleep on the couch for many nights after! 1408 isn't really horror but I suppose could kind of be classed as one. I love the concept of the film and every time I watch it, I get frustrated. Lastly, the first two or three Saw films are really good, as well as the Blair Witch, but as for an all time favourite I'll just stick to Paranormal Activity.

What is your favourite horror character?
Tough to choose, but I think I'm gonna have to go with the classics- Michael Myers and Jason. They're sort of the two people I associate with horror films.

Do you have any phobias? (If yes what?)
Yes, quite a few. Spiders, death, losing people around me, elevators/airplanes/any mechanism I'm not in control of, etc.

Do you think that animation can be as effective in the horror genre as film?
No, because then you lose the realism that can make a lot of horror movies so scary.

What age group do you think that a horror film or event would be aimed at? (Answer specifically about fright nights if you want)
Well based on all the horror films and haunts I've gone to, I'd say 13+ is the target audience.

What do you find scarier; gore, things that make you jump or a general creepy atmospher
Gore doesn't bother me at all, in fact, the only time it did I think was the scene in Hostel where the girl's eye was hanging out of its socket. Creepy atmosphere/things that make me jump are both tied for being the scariest.

What scares you?
Space, Spirals, **** FINGERNAILS.

What is your favourite horror film?
Evil Dead 2(?)

What is your favourite horror character?
Ash Williams

Do you have any phobias? (If yes what?)
Not really

Do you think that animation can be as effective in the horror genre as film?
Yes, yes and more yes. Not really a "horror" more suspense thriller what ever but Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni.

What age group do you think that a horror film or event would be aimed at? (Answer specifically about fright nights if you want)
Teen and onwards?

What do you find scarier; gore, things that make you jump or a general creepy atmosphere?
Atmosphere. Read Uzumaki. That **** will mess you up. Play Silent hill or Amnesia, That **** will mess you up. Browse /b/, that **** will mess you up.

Clowns, creepy puppets, the criminally insane

I don't watch a ton of horror movies, but of the ones I've seen, probably Paranormal Activity. Some like it, some think it sucks, I thought it was pretty chilling and really enjoyed it. It was awesome to see in the theater, too.

What is your favourite horror character?
Hannibal Lector probably. What a badass.
Waffleman said:
Do you have any phobias? (If yes what?)
Not really, no. I don't like clowns, but I'm certainly not scared of them to the degree that phobic people are.
Waffleman said:

Animation as in CGI? I think it's almost essential in many cases. Animation as in cartoons? Maybe.. I haven't personally seen it done effectively but I don't suppose it's impossible.
Waffleman said:
What age group do you think that a horror film or event would be aimed at?
Definitely teens/young adults. Anyone from 13-25
Waffleman said:

In a park setting, the gore isn't usually realistic enough to affect me. So creepy atmosphere works, but things that make me jump are a must too.

What scares you?

Spiders in my room when I'm trying to sleep

What is your favourite horror film?

Haven't watched one I don't think.

What is your favourite horror character?

See Above

Do you have any phobias? (If yes what?)

Slight arachnophobia as explained above

Do you think that animation can be as effective in the horror genre as film?

No, as film has more atmosphere than animation and animation is usually associated with children.

What age group do you think that a horror film or event would be aimed at? (Answer specifically about fright nights if you want)

Well, Theme park fright night look aimed at around 7-11 year olds but films should be 15+

What do you find scarier; gore, things that make you jump or a general creepy atmosphere?

I'm not sure but atmosphere and stuff jumping out is the scariest, but to have one it would have to be stuff jumping out.

What scares you?

Er nothing but i'm not keen on ladders!

What is your favourite horror film?

Either Rec or Zombie Land

What is your favourite horror character?

Jonathon Kramer from saw (The anti hero)

Do you have any phobias? (If yes what?)

Do ladders count?

Do you think that animation can be as effective in the horror genre as film?

Nope!

What age group do you think that a horror film or event would be aimed at? (Answer specifically about fright nights if you want)

Horror events have to be aimed at Adults, There is nothing to achieve but an angry parent in scaring a kid. If that parent happens to be me.... POOR POOR YOU! Some times i think the parks miss the point. I find horror mazes hilarious and the only thing i've thought a bit odd was the stilt walkers last year at altons scare fest. I see worse and far more intense things at death metal gigs to be honest.

What do you find scarier; gore, things that make you jump or a general creepy atmosphere?

NONE! Litterally none, i'm always aware its all for show and nothing more!

Sorry to say this, but that's kind of complete bollocks. Horror Events HAVE to be aimed at the full family (If it's a Park doing the event). It's as simple as that. They need less Intense attractions through to Full-Blown In your face Attractions, it's logical. You have to provide something for the entire audience, otherwise, you'd have, as you mentioned, "..And angry parent in scaring a kid". But, the thing is, if that adult has let the child go into the maze/attraction, at the end of the day, its their own fault, nothing can change that. Just had to put that point across...

What scares you?
Spiders. BUT, this is a big BUT, if I see Spider's webs & fake spider's in Horror Mazes, they don't scare me, in fact, I couldn't be less arsed about them, but if I see a real one, I am terrified. Also, the fear of the unknown get's to me, and although people won't admit it, Darkness, everyone is scared of darkness if they're in a situation where they know something is going to happen, it's all your human senses kicking into over-ride.

What is your favourite horror film?
Probably, [Rec]. It was amazing, still is to be fair. It's tension building was fantastic, the story was simple, yet effective, the acting ability was great. The ending also put shivers down my spine, really, really worth a watch if you haven't already.

What is your favourite horror character?
Hmm, this is a tricky one, if it's one out of a film, I'd have to pick Mary Shaw. It's not a well-known character as say Freddie Kruger or Jason Vorhees. But she's absolutely terrifying, the scene in the film (Dead Silence) where she's on stage and picks that child out of the audience is really creepy. She's a very strong and scary iconic character. Speaking of Icon characters, if you're game for a bit of Halloween Events, you'll known Jack the Clown from Universal's Halloween Horror Nights. He really is one of the most awesome characters known to man. He's been recognised the world over and really added depth to Halloween Horror Nights - If you don't know anything about him, look him over, it's worth it.

Do you have any phobias? (If yes what?)
As I said before, Spiders. Also, I'm partly Claustrophobic (Which doesn't make sense in the line of work I'm in, I know), yet I LOVE the feeling of Claustrophobia in mazes. It's a trick you HAVE to add.

Do you think that animation can be as effective in the horror genre as film?
Um, it depends really, in terms of which sub-genre it's going into. Like, if it's a game, F.E.A.R shows that a game CAN be scary. If it's along the lines of Horror Movies, no, I don't think it can. Bringing me on to the final, a horror maze, NO, NEVER add animation, unless it's a projection effect or something, speaking from past experience, it doesn't work.

What age group do you think that a horror film or event would be aimed at? (Answer specifically about fright nights if you want)
As I said in the rant at the top of this post, It HAS to be based on families, otherwise it's a complete no-go. Ever wondered why they have different ratings on their attractions? It's not just because they think, "Oh, right, this attraction isn't that scary at the moment, so I'll give it a rating of 2/5", it's because the lower the rating, the more family orientated the attraction is, they have to do this, otherwise, they'll have a LOT of pissed of families.

What do you find scarier; gore, things that make you jump or a general creepy atmosphere?
I think you've hit the nail on the head with this one, it's VERY hard to decide whether or not to add gore into an attraction or not. Personally, I find it too easy to add gore to scare effects, I find a creepy atmosphere & more psychological elements to be far scarier then just, "Bang, Blood & Bye Bye" (as I like to call some of these attractions - If taken in the wrong way, I know it could sound VILE). But yeah, more Psuchological wins in this I think.

Hope this has helped you! :)

What scares you? - In terms of films, scary children and creepy ghosts. The Others might be the scariest film ever. In terms of like, life... Failure, compromise, minge.

What is your favourite horror film? - [rec] <3 or Switchblade Romance. European horror <3

What is your favourite horror character? - Mrs Vorhees. She's **** fab.

Do you have any phobias? (If yes what?) - No actual phobias, no.

Do you think that animation can be as effective in the horror genre as film? - It could be, but, I've not seen it done well yet. Salad Fingers is scary as **** I guess.

What age group do you think that a horror film or event would be aimed at? (Answer specifically about fright nights if you want) - Adults. Please, adults. None of this Chessington crap.

What do you find scarier; gore, things that make you jump or a general creepy atmosphere? - All of the above combined to great effect? I'll use the opening of Scream as the perfect balance - creepy build up, followed by a jump, followed by a gory death. It's horror perfection those ten minutes Drew Barrymore gets spited. I'd say creepy atmosphere is the best, but, there NEEDS to be a shocking payoff, and it should be gory <3 All the best films are the ones that strike this balance. [rec] is creepy as hell, then jumpy, then gory. So is Switchblade Romance. It's all perfection. Perrrffecct.

What scares you?
Nothing, TBH, although some internet stuff out there is just wtf.

What is your favourite horror film?
Halloween the Rob Zombie remakes

What is your favourite horror character?
Michael Meyers

Do you have any phobias? (If yes what?)
Napes.

Do you think that animation can be as effective in the horror genre as film?
Hell to the no.

What age group do you think that a horror film or event would be aimed at? (Answer specifically about fright nights if you want)
18+

What do you find scarier; gore, things that make you jump or a general creepy atmosphere?
None of the above.

That'll do, of course you can keep doing it just for fun if you want, but thanks so much everyone, I got way more information than I expected, I thought I'd get one or two half-arsed replies, but you all helped me out so much.
I LOVE YOU CF!

What scares you?
Snakes, spiders, and crackhead thugs with guns.

What is your favorite horror film?
Probably Poltergeist. It still gives me chills everytime I watch it. Definitely the ultimate haunted house movie.

What or who is your favorite horror character?
It has to be The Cook from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre later to be identified as Drayton Sawyer in part 2. RIP Jim Siedow.

Do you have any phobias?
Acrophobia for sure but it doesn't deter me from thrill rides, though really high drop towers do one helluva number on my nerves.

Do you think that animation can be as effective in the horror genre as film?
I sure do but maybe not in the sense you are thinking. Animated puppets in The Dark Crystal
were creepy. Also, dark classical animation films such as The Last Unicorn, The Black Cauldron, and Wizards had some pretty dark overtones. Even The Secret of Nihm had some really evil visuals in it, unfortunately CGI has taken over classical animation.

Age group for horror films or fest?
18+

What do you find scarier; gore, things that make you jump, or a general creepy atmosphere?
I find that psychological and religious horror stands the test of time. I like a scene where the dialogue sends chills up your spine for example in Poltergeist the explanations of the other side by Dr. Lecht(Beatrice Straight) and Tangina(Zelda Rubinstein) are creepy to the maximum. Other films that I find legitimately scary are Prince of Darkness, The Exorcist, The Exorcist III, The Changeling(with George C. Scott), The Evil Dead, etc.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I have to disagree with the board about [REC] being a good movie. I found the makeup very cheesy and unconvincing. The US remake, Quarantine is virtually the exact same move with better effects and more action.

My point exactly. REC and Quarantine were both just dreadful. The best zombie flick I've seen in a long time is 28 Days Later but the sequel was crap. Before anyone says anything, I know they were "infected" with rage virus, but dammit, they were still zombies.
