A Goon's Grand Tour of Ohio (ft. rtotheizzo17)://KI and CP

Jarrett

Most Obnoxious Member 2016
So my home state of Ohio has been receiving a lot of love from Cedar Faire in the recent years. Kings Island got a new waterpark in 2012 and a kick **** B&M invert for this year, and Cedar Point just last year got an almost equally kick **** B&M wing coaster and this year got two new flats as well as an area facelift.

Enthusiasts from everywhere are flocking to Ohio to hit up both of these amazing parks, and when I saw that somebody from Coasterforce who we all know as rtotheizzo17 was here and staying in my hometown's area and had invited more people to go with him on this would-be-solo credit run, I had to take him up on it. I offered to drive to Kings Island if he did Cedar Point but he was cool doing both so he drove both trips.

Day 1: Kings Island

10270701_839834936045535_7850803508014147617_n.jpg

Gooniform theme? Crappy B&M inverts!

10373656_840105049351857_8353299520933134329_n.jpg

We got to KI around 1-2-ish and headed left. First ride WAS supposed to be Invertigo, but we decided to make our first ride a decent one, so hit up my baby, Banshee! All I can say is WOW!!! It's definitely gotten faster since media day, and the amount of snap in the zero-g has gone way up. Still as intense as ever, though the carousel turn has sped up significantly and has gotten really intense as a result. The inline provided just as much terrifying "dump" as it did on media day, and the helix felt a tad bit more intense. Not to mention it looks fabulous, too...

10271517_840104922685203_2417074448838769490_n.jpg

Afterwards we made like the Cincinnati Reds and went up to The Bat. Again, great Arrow suspended (though I like SFMM Ninja better) and it wasn't dripping oil on everybody like it was on media day.

1920148_840104929351869_7869992135124288406_n.jpg

Because it was a walk-on, we decided to do Banshee again. But when I saw the purple train roll into the station, I knew we were in for an experience far from your typical Banshee ride. And boy was I right! The rattling had only gotten worse since media day and it kind of made what should have been an amazing ride just meh. It rattled like an Arrow! For some reason the blue train is completely rattle-free, the green train has just a bit of it, and the purple train rattles like crazy. Not sure why, but I hope KI fixes it like they did GateKeeper stapling.

10277862_840104926018536_8398846243481098491_n.jpg

And then we hit this oh-so-much-fun ride to clean out the last of the park section full of inverted coasters. Invertigo; I REALLY hate that ride! It was better than KBF's boomerang but that really doesn't say too much! It was a walk-on (which isn't that common, I've seen it get two-hour waits) but it was still painful. And I hate the shoulder cup things on the OTSRs, not sure if they've always been there but I just now noticed them.

10262004_840105096018519_1464799715427761077_n.jpg

Flying Ace was next on our way to Diamondback. Meh, it's Flying Ace. Somewhat rough, but a nice little family coaster. Maybethey could add the new Vekoma trains with the overhead lap bars?

10362857_840105126018516_1449694860297295853_n.jpg

Up next was Diamondback...

10367162_840105229351839_7569030608078502735_n.jpg

...or as it should be called, DiamondSTACK. I have NEVER in my life seen a B&M stack that badly! Both trains on both brake blocks and one in the station nowhere close to dispatching, it was unbelievable! Those seatbelts really are a pain and I saw a few that worked a bit differently than others. Kings Island needs to send those seatbelts to the same place wherever Son of Beast is to burn for eternity! :redhotevil:

That being said, it was still a fab ride, as always.

10155235_840105239351838_3579056953086278112_n.jpg

And what good is a trip to KI without LaRosa's or Skyline Chili? I did this after we did The Beast and while rtotheizzo17 did BSC.

10268478_840105262685169_4773377030646348905_n.jpg

After getting beaten on Vortex, rtotheizzo17 hit Firehawk, a ride on which I sat out on account of it being vile on multiple levels.

10170961_840105356018493_2683377979427467392_n.jpg

We then finished the loop with Racer and Adventure Express (see what I can do when I forget to take pictures? :P This, Diamondstack, I'm on fire tonight!) and yeah. Racer was running just one side but red was still somewhat smooth and airtime-y. Fun old ride, I have to admit. And Adventure Express got rougher I think. It might have been just my imagination, though. I wish they had changed the bulb in the lava at the end though, don't make an already anticlimactic ending even worse. :P

10257308_840105426018486_6865470124416048500_n.jpg

While rtotheizzo17 went to knock out Woodstock Express and Eiffel Tower, I went to spend some quality time with my baby...

These people might get off feeling the impulse to ride a small children's tricycle along a gravel path. Look at the color of the train.

10310099_840105692685126_5539424162882167966_n.jpg

Got a tad thirsty so I tried a Banshee brew, which is their famous blueberry ice cream in red cream soda. It was good, but full of sugar and the flavors never really mix.

10245460_840105726018456_3699332797942096277_n.jpg

Here she goes!

This is probably my most photographed coaster...

If I was over just a bit more this would be a fabulous shot...

I tried SO hard to get that last shot from a lower angle with more of the train! I was that weirdo laying on his stomach in the park with his camera pointing through the fence bars trying to get it!

Chicken Shack is open for business!

On this trip I picked up mostly things I had kicked myself for previously not buying, and one of the things I wanted was this orange Beast hat. Didn't have it anymore :( but seeing this really cool window display did give me a cool idea for an addition; if/when they RMC Beast, rebrand it a bit. Get rid of that midway? style building that serves as the entrance for a forest-themed ride and plant some pine trees with rockwork around it so it looks as if you're heading into deep woods, similar to Timber Mountain at KBF.

10352413_840106246018404_5399456568039587798_n.jpg

Goodbye, Kings Island!

Day 2: Cedar Point

After fighting shift work disorder induced by day 1, I dragged myself out of bed to go drive to our meeting point to go to THE Point!

10290698_840609055968123_9024394770658105438_n.jpg

I was with somebody and was trying to remain civilized, but I still gooned out a bit when I saw this, not gonna lie...

These people are side keyholing!

ERT on Raptor!

10351403_840609172634778_7244470536399738455_n.jpg

I didn't even gable in Vegas and I picked up a gambling addiction! Lost ten dollars on this stupid thing! I won last year, didn't win this year.

10329268_840609192634776_7059868840205640505_n.jpg

This drop is amazing...

10270562_840609275968101_8941264516926988518_n.jpg

First ride of the day? My #2 and the best coaster in Ohio in my eyes, Millennium Force! We walked on it twice and got the back once! Such a fun morning coaster, seeing everything but the surrounding land cloaked in fog is so cool!

10365972_840609299301432_2917751050860240238_n.jpg

Next up was Maverick, which we were expecting to be on and off of...

10270562_840609325968096_2968504165441247608_n.jpg

But nobody on the tracks...

10300682_840609379301424_1015480133721246294_n.jpg

They had to move some trains around and get one off and two on, a process that took thirty minutes...

10366039_840609362634759_3424422265784994273_n.jpg

But we got on in the front and HOLY CRAP!!!! My #3 still delivered, that drop is still insane!

10295660_840609415968087_7939521759313364861_n.jpg

Up next: A ride on Cedar Creek Mine Ride, brought to you by this goon shot of the Arrow track!

I have a school friend named SJ that works there and had said on Facebook that they'd meet me. I'm waiting on our CCMR train and I get a "turn around" text. And BAM!!! SJ was waiting for us in the station!

10268570_840609439301418_2427645458450339594_n.jpg

We did Gemini Red after this and then strolled down the Gemini midway. Pipe Scream was down but not Lake Erie Eagles (wanted to squeeze GateKeeper in there before the forecasted rain started). That being said, they themed the area really nicely. The way I'm describing how they kept the 80's feel that I was so worried about it losing when the expansion was announced is that it now feels nostalgic instead of dated. You can tell it was the Gemini midway, it retains that charm, but it's no longer neglected. And I want to come here at night!

1017755_840609469301415_227329778923199070_n.jpg

rtotheizzo17 stuck around to get Woodstock Express while SJ and I booked it to GateKeeper...and it would be down for mechanical. :P Luckily, I heard them call the employees sweeping the steps back to their posts and before I knew it, the ride was open!

10253820_840609512634744_5368238622201262897_n.jpg

SJ was putting their stuff in their locker when it opened so we got separated and didn't ride together, but I snagged a front seat on the right, the side I hadn't ridden! And as an added bonus, it had started to rain lightly but steadily. First GateKeeper ride in the rain and it rocked! That drop is terrifying with the unlocked vest and while it did feel like getting pelted in the face with snow at the bottom of the elements, it was still fun!

10262117_840416995987329_1615824742305642060_n.jpg

The GateKeeper sign in the rain!

10314697_840609539301408_5049987736555097799_n.jpg

What happens when it rains? The tracks get wet. What happens when the tracks get wet? The trains go faster...

10380305_840609559301406_3431492020639740411_n.jpg

Our chariot awaits!

Giant blue iron pretzel on Lake Erie!

10298689_840609615968067_7077414443051208879_n.jpg

Just as our train pulled in, they shut the ride down due to weather and force everybody out of the station. :(

10303771_840609639301398_3925034725273533824_n.jpg

By then it had started pouring, and I got this one of them evacuating the brake run train.

10177907_840422575986771_7835092226420783178_n.jpg

I was being cheap since I had splurged for the past two weeks and decided a bag would do for leaving the GateKeeper gift shop...huge mistake!

10300005_840609669301395_7142682089283613819_n.jpg

We then went over to Famous Dave's after I soaked myself running over to SJ's locker to grab my hat...and like the day of the Live, were treated to a disa-Cedar Point-ing view of the park with nothing running.

1510361_840609682634727_7102449623212649147_n.jpg

A rare look at the Jarrett without his signature button-up over his tee. It got too wet and I took it off to dry.

Jarrett vs. Famous Dave's Wilbur's Revenge sauce (their Devil's Spit sauce mixed with jalapenos)...and Wilbur got his revenge. :P

10255559_840609722634723_4957934104436019200_n.jpg

I want to have my 21st birthday party here next year.

Ah, my favorite lunch platter. Their chicken tenders are fabulous, their catfish sticks are fabulous, the ribs are fabulous, you get the idea. :P

1506799_840609882634707_5932257124531762904_n.jpg

We went back to the park, the only thing running was GateKeeper, the line had filled the cattlepen that we knew was practically a good way to get soaked at this point (their colored awnings are good for shade but do NOTHING for rain!), and initially wanted to stick around, but when we heard thunder and they killed GateKeeper, we gave up all hope and decided to leave around 2, tired, cold, and soaked.

10314472_840609902634705_6669258653106103781_n.jpg

And TTD and Power Tower fade into the rainy Lake Erie skies...

10262121_840609945968034_236169585939499043_n.jpg

Both rtotheizzo17 and I wanted our pictures with this Golden Ticket sign in guest services. I instantly told them we weren't there to rip their heads off as I walked in and they looked ready for a verbal beating over the rain.

10308900_840609969301365_4007593931982394153_n.jpg

Me with the Golden Ticket sign rocking the poncho swag!

Saw a red-winged blackbird on the way out of the park and got a meh nature shot of it.

10356722_840610082634687_3614044533180492669_n.jpg

And finally, the "soaked at Cedar Point" selfie!

Driving across a rainy causeway.

Apparently all of Ohio got the memo that it was supposed to absolutely pour today and Sandusky just got it late. It rained all the way up, it rained all the way down, and here it poured!

10176120_840610022634693_8466711859127718070_n.jpg

What a fun week doing both of my home parks! I learned a bit about the CP drive and the KI drive so I should be able to do both on my own really soon! Hoping to go back to one in the coming weeks!

Re: A Goon's Grand Tour of Ohio (ft. rtotheizzo17)://KI and

Awesome. Love it!

Interesting about the rattle on the Banshee trains. Hope that gets better.
I wouldn't mind trying out another rainy coaster ride. I think the last time I rode a coaster in the rain was Flashback at SFNE. A rough boomerang combined with getting hit with raindrops is something I do not recommend. :P

Re: A Goon's Grand Tour of Ohio (ft. rtotheizzo17)://KI and

Awesome report Jarrett! Shame about the downpour, it looked horrendous!

Re: A Goon's Grand Tour of Ohio (ft. rtotheizzo17)://KI and

^Great photos Jarrett

Enjoy some hastily taken photos from an iPhone below V

So my "weekend" getaway this year was a quick two day trip to Ohio for Kings Island and Cedar Point. It had been about 4 years since I had been to CP and had never been to KI so yeah...

After a slightly delayed flight, and receiving a beater of a rental I picked up Jarrett and drove 45 minutes south from Dayton to Mason for Kings Island!

After doing some pre-trip planning I decided I wanted to go in and hook left right away, to get Banshee and the other creds on that quarter of the park. I decided I needed I good start to the trip...

Just kidding, that was a few credits later. Up first was the latest and greatest from B&M...Banshee!

The park was deader then Paul Walker after a night of street racing, so we walked right into the station and had a one train wait for front row. After pulling down the new wing rider restraints, and getting the usual tightness in the shoulders I was worried it would be a rough ride. Luckily they dont get any tighter as you go around.

You start up the lift and are greeted by a loop around it, this is the only time you notice the element as you are inverted when you go around it, but it is a cool start. The first drop might be the best first drop on any B&M anywhere. You get yanked back and to the right with great force, you enter the drawn out dive loop, loop, and then float into a great zero-g. Kumba still has the best zero-g IMO but this was still great. From this point on its a completely different ride...more closely comparable to Batman or Afterburn. You fly into the pretzel/batwing and get snapped thru 2 quick inversions that leave you disoriented, before you even realize that element is over you are into another intense loop, follwed by some helices that have the tingling in the legs intensity that I have only experienced on the Batman clones before. Those finish, and you start the long, drawn out heartline (or whatever the **** its called). That might be the biggest holy **** experience on a ride full of them. You get great hangtime and feel like you are going to stall at any moment. You have another turn or two and fly into the station. GREAT RIDE.

Rtotheizzo himself is ready to declare it his #1 inverted when.... we ride again, this time on a different train. I cant remember the colors (I think Jarrett pointed them out), but the next train we rode rattled just as bad as any SLC I have ever been on. It was a **** miserable experience. We got on the 3rd train later and it was in between the two. I have never seen such a huge discrepancy in ride experiences from train to train. For that reason alone I'm keeping Montu as my #1 invert. But cheers anyway for a great ride Banshee!

After Banshee we looped around to Bat and the Vekoma Inverted Boomerang. Bat was the "worst" of the suspendeds Ive been on but it was still fun. Invertigo sucked about as much as I excpected the combo of a boomerang and SLC restraints to suck.

We picked up the junior Vekoma invert and made our way to the crown jewel of the park.

The trains were stacking as Jarrett mentioned, but one of the ride Ops claimed they were still hitting 40 dispatches. I wouldnt believe it from what we saw. When I got in my seat I thought the seatbelts retracted automatically...they dont. I pulled it all the way out and it just hung limper then Clay Aiken at the Playboy Mansion. The ride attendant came by, asked me to try and stand up, then just shoved the end of the belt under the clamshell. Useless. Anyway, enough about the **** restraints, on to a fantastic hyper coaster. The first two hills on this ride our beautiful, airtime filled gifts from God. The turn around is forceful and the bunny hills and the helices the rest of the way are great. I have Diamondback tied with Goliath over Georgia as my favorite hyper, they are the only 2 I have been on that give you standing up airtime over every hill.

Next up was Beast. It was long, thats all I can say about it.

Jarrett stopped for some pizza while I knocked out the Backlot Clone, after that we met back up and went on another headbanger in Vortex, not as bad as GASM at Great Adventure but pretty bad.

Next to Vortex was Windseeker, currently closed for high winds. This would be a theme in Ohio.

We then made our way to the "sci-fi" themed area of the park. After experience walk-on after walk-on I was stunned to see Flight of Fear posted at a 30 min wait. I decided to get the not as bad as people say Vekoma flyer out of the way. This was my third one, they are all good but not great rides. Try and count the number of employees vs guests on Firehawk.

We walked back to Flight of Fear to find it now posted at 60. I didnt really believe it because there was at most 2k in the park, but decided a clone that I had been on at least 3 other places wasnt worth the wait and skipped it. Now I have a reason to go back

We got spited by half of racer (seriously every ride was at max operation but half of a racing coaster closed? **** you). Rode Banshee again, then Jarrett apparently got super artistic while I got the kiddy woody cred and went to the Eiffel Tower top just to say I did. Oh yea, their Boo Blasters entrance is the best one I have seen yet. Here are the rest of the pics I took, finger in the screen (or penis?) included:

It was hot as balls, and I had been up for 14 or so hours at this point, so we called it a day. After dropping off Jarrett and heading to my **** of a hotel, I stumbled upon a rip off Big Boy called Frisks (I think). Most people know Big Boy as Bob, from Austin Powers (and California). I inquired about the blatant infringement inside and they said they had no relation to Bob's, but there are several across the country with different names. You learn something new everyday?

Pt 2 Cedar Point later...

Re: A Goon's Grand Tour of Ohio (ft. rtotheizzo17)://KI and

Great reports, guys!

Between the Lightning Run POV earlier and now all these Kings Island photos, I really can't wait for my trip in June!

Re: A Goon's Grand Tour of Ohio (ft. rtotheizzo17)://KI and

I got up early the next morning and started heading north to Cedar Point. About 20 min into the trip I stopped and picked up Jarrett and headed to the Point on a cold and rainy day. Along I-75 north I tallied a total of 7 dead deer , a dead bird, and a dead baby goat. This was over a stretch of about 120 miles, seemed excessive?

Anyways after just over 3 hours of driving we parked in the second row of an empty looking parking lot and started our day at CP! I really love the new entrance

We still had about 10 min until gate drop so I took the time to snap a pic of everyone's fav invert, and blow $5 on a Plinko style game.

Ended up winning 20% off at the gift shop (used to knock off a whole $1.40 on my $7 purchase  ) and a free old tyme photo or character. I donated the old tyme photo to Jarrett since he said a few CFers were rolling thru later in the year...cant wait to see Ian or ECG dressed like am 1840's prostitute?

The gate finally dropped, and we started on our trek to the back of the park for Millennium Force and Maverick. A good portion of the morning rush went to GateKeeper, a good portion went to Raptor (I think they had a psychics day assignment?), and the rest were split between TTD and MF. I am talking 300 people at most here, very slow day again.

We walked onto a train and took off for our first ride of the day. The ride is just fun. From start to finish its all about speed, I have it in my top 10 but it is not #1 by any stretch. As our train pulled into unload the team member offered us a chance to re-ride. We did so and grabbed the last row. I vaguely remember this happening 4 years ago but I got grey spots in the back row. Not as bad as I305 but still. Here are a few more Intamin/Foot porn pics.

Since rain was in the forecast we skipped a 3rd ride and went to Maverick. This ride blew me away 4 years ago, and it is still awesome. I think the last half has gotten a little rougher, but it is nothing terrible. Jarrett mentioned our excitement when we saw this...

Only to get into the station while they **** around for 30 minutes trying to pull a train and replace it. Honestly the park was so slow they should have just yanked the train and got on with life. Instead they wasted a half hour of possible ride time. Here are a few shots of the area.

I thought about getting a Mean Streak pic from the Maverick unload, but the ride isnt worth the memory on my phone. Jarrett tried to get me to "Jarrett" but I told him that was his thing, not trying to take it from him. He did "Jarrett" the entire Maverick ride, only to have the on-ride photo not work... :(

Anyways we went over to the mine train, I noticed 2 trains running around the track and thought "wow, Cedar Fair really cares, two slow as balls days and they are at max operation". We get to the front of the line to find out they are loading 1/3 of one train, and are sending the other around empty... :redhotevil: Another 10 minutes wasted on what should have been a walk on +1. We went to Gemini next (same thing, only loading 1/2 a train), then Jarrett ran ahead with his friend while I powered thru the kiddy area to get the +1 available.

I ran to catch up with Jarrett, TTD was down and I walked past Magnum. Scooted past another closed Windseeker to find GateKeeper down for maintenance. I ran over to pick up Wicked Twister, and by the time I got back GateKeeper had reopened.

Walked onto the front left row of GateKeeper. As we dispatched it started to rain pretty hard. I **** hate riding in the rain, its like getting hit with a BB gun in the face for 2 minutes. Aside from that, I REALLY enjoyed GateKeeper. It provided tons of hang time, and the near misses in the front left were great! The ride gets a lot of crap, but from my 1 ride it was undeserved. We ran around to try and get another ride in but the rain intensified and they closed it. It was fun watching them evac from the brake run, as guests got soaked.

I grabbed (as Gavin so eloquently describes) a $5 body condom for the rain, and we hustled over to Famous Daves for a place to dry off and enjoy some good food. As I went to buy a beer panic hit me as my DL was nowhere to be found, luckily the Aussie didnt ID me, and even better I found my DL back at the hotel. I had been to Famous Daves somewhere in the south, the food is damn good. I got a stuffed back potato, which was essentially a giant potato with brisket, bacon, and cheese. The meal also provided another side (I recommend the green beans), and a corn bread muffin, as for $11.99. Beats the hell out of paying $11.99 for a cheeseburger and fries in the park. The restaurant offered a nice few of the marina and its snakes, as well as some of the coasters.

As we were finishing up the rain stopped so we booked it back in to the park to try and do a lap or two on Gatekeeper as well as pick up Blue Streak. Cedar Point has the asinine policy that Gatekeeper can operate in the rain but the rest of the park cant. So Blue Streak and Raptor were closed, while Gatekeeper had a line down the stairs. We heard more thunder roll in so we called it a day. I enjoy Cedar Point, but I would really like to know how much of a "donation" they make to Golden Ticket to keep winning this damn thing.
