Quin Checketts, S&S ride engineer and tower ride enthusiast, describes the different speed levels of experience.

“Anyone can come and experience New York City like never before. If you want to leisurely rise high above The Big Apple to get the best cityscape view you’ve ever had, there are gondolas designed just for you. If you are feeling like you could use a little natural stimulation and want to feel a little speed and g-force, we’ve got that as well.

If, however, you are a complete adrenaline junky and want to experience the most thrilling sensation of your life – complete weightlessness for several seconds, it is all here at the HALO! You can quietly observe your heart rate increase and your palms perspire as you are securely locked into our fail safe restraint system. Relax, and trust our safely record and observe the ground as it moves farther and farther away. Notice the yellow taxi cabs on the streets shrink to the size of tiny toys or, lift your head a little and watch the awesome New York City skyline appear and look out over the ocean. Your gondola will be raised 1200 feet into the sky. You will pause momentarily at the top. Your five senses will be on high alert as you painfully wait for the plunge. Without warning your seat will plummet. You will, likely, gasp as you begin your free fall toward the city far below. You will, likely, feel an exhilarating flutter in your stomach. You will reach speeds in excess of 100 mph! Will you be clutching your harness with super human strength or will you be surrendering to the sensation with your hands held high? There is one way to find out.

Finally, after what may seem like an eternity (really only 6 seconds) you will begin your deceleration. The vulnerable, fluttery, weightless sensation will smoothly transition to the secure reassuring feeling of begin saved by the fail-safe, permanent magnetic braking system. You will feel relief as your body comes to rest securely into your seat. If your arms were up high, you will feel them get heavy again. In fact, your arms will feel 3.5 times as heavy as normal as you will be experiencing a 3.5 g deceleration. After your reentry into NYC, there will be a small recovery period as your adrenaline levels stabilize and your heart rate returns. Thanks for riding.”

P.S. If you were clutching the restraint, you will have to repeat the experience until you can raise your hands high into the air and thoroughly experience weightlessness.

Come again.

Nearly 3 times as tall as Zumanjaro, and it'll break 100 mph. It'll give coaster enthusiasts an actual excuse to go to NYC(aside from work/living there).

This is going to seriously change the NYC Skyline.

S&S 1200 foot drop tower in NYC?

The proposed structure will sit atop Penn Station (aka Madison Square Garden).

Looks cool and all, but I think we all know this isn't going to happen. I feel like we see one of these things every other year or so, and this topic is just about the last we ever hear of them.

Not going to make some ridiculous claim about it never happening (I don't want to have to go to KI with Blackhole6670 so we can ride the slingshot hand in hand), but odds of this being a reality are at slim to none.

What is actually the purpose behind this structure? They surely wouldn't build this hideous thing in the middle of NYC just to have a big-ass drop tower in the middle of the city...

^^

The Halo comes in response to Governor Cuomo’s call to re-imagine Penn Station as a mixed use destination that will “captivate the world’s interest and provide economic development.” This is New York’s high-tech version of the Eiffel Tower: a thrill ride taller than the Empire State Building, and an unforgettable icon on the skyline.

I'm already booking tickets ; it'll be great.

We really need to stop calling these ridiculous concepts "proposals".

But that's exactly what it is: state officials issued a Request For Proposals earlier this year and this is one of the things they got. The state has apparently received several proposals for that land but this is the only one that's gone for mass publicity (possibly because they didn't hand over the required $15m to keep it secret). Looks like the rest are shopping developments: http://www.gizmag.com/penn-station-proposals/27755/ and http://ny.curbed.com/2016/1/7/10849026/ ... s-revealed

I dream of the day where a 1000 foot tall drop tower is built. Although I'm slightly disappointed with the artwork of the ride vehicle. S&S already has a prototype running in Utah that lacks an OTSR (in fact, I believe it's just a seatbelt!) ... I'd love the freedom without on something as beastly as this. (Or maybe a delightful tilt function) I mean, we all know it's not going to happen... But it's nice to daydream.

Hmm.. 1200ft? You sure?? That's huge. I NEED TO RIDE IT WHEN ITS BUILD

Re: 1200 foot tall S&S Drop Tower in NYC's proposed "Halo"

A thousand foot drop tower would probably do something nasty to your head because of the change in air pressure.

Your ears can pop going up/down in a lift in a building 1,000ft tall though. No reason why this wouldn't do the same?

Not going to happen anyway though etc..

My ears pop going down from the top of our building, which is the same height as like, Lex Luthor.

I imagine it differs because of the pressure in a lift versus being outside.
