April 29, 2020 – Funtown Splashtown USA amusement and water park announced that it will not open for the 2020 season due to restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic. The park posted on Facebook that it will “spend this summer painting, cleaning, building and improving upon our business” in preparation of a “safe return for the summer of 2021” and that all passes purchased for this season will be valid for 2021.
Maine put restrictions on large gatherings in place through the end of June and U.S. government restrictions makes hiring temporary workers through the J-1 Visa program almost impossible. Even if both of those were lifted at that point, operating from July onward would not be worth the cost under social distancing that’s likely to continue throughout the summer.
Regardless, it’s the first full-sized amusement and water park in the country to cancel the 2020 season and the first time the park will not operate since opening in 1967.
