New entries for 2013 in bold.

Like Mike posted in the More Cheese Trip Reports topic, the Wild Mouse at Pleasure Beach Blackpool was running incredibly well this weekend. It was my favorite coaster at the park before, but I got in three rides on Saturday and each one was a good as the previous (so it wasn't just a fluke single ride that pushed it into my Top 5).
This got me thinking about how I should rate my top coasters and I've decided to go by the best rides I've had on each to rank them. This has moved things around a bit with Beast moving into my Top 20 (because of my night rides) and Intimidator 305 making my Top 25 (because of how it ran during my first two trips to Kings Dominion after it first opened).

I did this for a bit, and I think it still holds some water :)

For something like I305, it's clear that there was a "before" and "after" situation so it's a ride that you can easily explain why it's there. Likewise, The Beast at night is a specific situation that can be repeated. I guess it's kind of like people who always go for that specific seat on Baco at that specific time and think it's wonderful. It's a situation you can repeat, so it's easy to justify.

My issue was with things like The Nash. My best ride was on a damp September evening in 2006. It was incredible, really mind blowingly fantastic. So it stopped at my number one spot for years and years.

Then subsequent rides were a mix of abysmal and "okay I guess". Then I also increased my ride count to take in some superb rides from around the world. How do you hold on to that one superb ride, seven years on when it's never offered anything like it before, and other rides have probably given significantly better experiences. Each bad ride dilutes the good ride. Each "better" coaster you ride makes it harder to nail that one great ride you had in place. The problem is, several years later, you just really don't know how good that ride was and memory is a fickle thing.

I think for some rides it certainly works though Jerry. It'll be a long time before you find another ride in the world that gives an experience anything like Blackpool's mouse. So it really stands out and the memory remains pure. I think possibly I305 too, where it isn't really a standard ride. As I said at the start, you can always re-experience The Beast at night to cement it.

It's things like The Nash, where you may ride dozens of very similar experiences, so it's hard to do. I don't think you have to worry with your list, as the anomalies are stand out enough. For me, that one great run on The Nash (and all my joyous childhood runs) are a memory and I need to be realistic about how it runs today, which isn't top 20 material :)

Re: Top 10: 2013 Edition

I know exactly what you mean Phil. I thought a good deal about it before adjusting my Top 25.
I rode the Wild Mouse twice when we both visited the Pleasure Beach a couple of years ago and it was great and riding it three more times at the CF-Live on Saturday just cemented what I thought about it (which I couldn't do with just the two previous rides). I've also ridden the Beast at night at least a half dozen times and every ride was great, so no doubts there either. Especially since, as you said, I can repeat that same experience every time I go to the park.
The only coaster in my list that is an exception is Colossos, as I only rode it once during the CF-Live in 2009. However it's a typical Intamin plug-n-play and has the same great airtime that El Toro (which I've ridden hundreds of times) offers, so I know exactly what the ride will be like whenever I do get the chance to go back to Heide Park. In other words - Colossos is no Nash. I also know that whenever I get the opportunity to ride T-Express, that it will land in my top 10 (if not my top 5). The only plug-n-play I'm not sure of is Balder, but I'll see how that goes in a couple of weeks.
I also put Skyrush in the same boat as I305, as I rode it plenty of times last year before they put the dampers on it. I know neither coaster will ever ride the same as they did those first dozen or more rides, but I can't dismiss what fantastic coasters they were when they were able to deliver such great rides over & over again (although be it for only a season or a few months in I305's case).
As for my childhood memories, well since I'm an old fart, the coasters back then can't compare to what we have now. However it wasn't that long ago that I rode Thriller at the Volksfest in Stuttgart and thought it was the best thing ever. I probably rode it a half dozen times, but it was too long ago to really put it in my list as it simply might not hold up if I could ride it today (exactly as it was back then before it was castrated by Premier Rides).

Are you sure? ;) :p

I tend to class childhood as up to the point where I became an enthusiast officially  I'd been riding The Nash almost year in year out for about 25 years before I stepped outside the UK for better wood beyond the borders (well, I had Megafobia, but as good as Megafobia was, it was never better than The Nash at it's best - they're the only two rides I can really compare side by side as I rode both numerous times in the same years for many years). So I guess it's really rides where many years have passed since riding it where my own personal experience was lacking - rather than an age thing as such (otherwise Corkscrew at Alton might still be in my top ten :p ).

But yeah, I think it works perfectly for you Jerry with the rides you're looking at and "close experience".

^^Skyrush is still good though, right?

I know what ECG means. I THINK that Balder will go in your top 10 because...

20% of T Express: El Toro 80% of T Express: Balder

You said that the airtime on El Toro and Colossos makes you know what T Express will be like. You also said that you are almost sure that T Express will go in your top 10 when you ride it because of the airtime experience on El Toro and Colossos. Most of the ride of T Express is Balder's layout, so if your dreaming of what it would be like than take out 20% of T Express and you have Balder with a turn at the end. SO, That means that you will probably really enjoy Balder.

I personally think Balder LOOKS the best out of all of them. Most people end up totally adoring Balder, but some end up thinking that it's meh, so I don't know for sure and it really depends on your personal taste.

You can't go by looks Connor and I don't dream about Balder. You have to ride the coaster before making any conclusions. You'll learn these things once you get a bit older. If you want to know more about why I'm saying this, ask furie about Balder. It's not as cut and dry as you might think.
And yes, Skyrush is still good, just not as amazing as it was last year.

100% MEH
Like.. its fun... but its not mind blowing... El Toro is a far greater ride.

lolol, even a high lapbar (OK'd by staff...) couldn't help this little ride

Best part... was being told its OK to tag the ride....

I understand that Balder may have some bad days like a lot of coasters, but i thought it was incredible in that it was so smooth and had such amazing ejector airtime constantly on every hill. It is my favourite coaster and would be hard to beat. By the looks of things i think only El Toro, T Express and Outlaw Run have a chance of beating it for me.

That's different than just saying "I think you will like it."
And all I said is you can't make those kind of conclusions without actually riding Balder. If everyone raved about Balder after riding it, like they do after riding T-Express, then I would also say that I would likely do likewise. However, as CanobieFan and many others have said - it tends to be rather meh compared to the other three plug-n-plays.

Yeah the whole T-Express is 80% Balder is total crap. Balder is really bland and quite dull. The other three are much, much better.
