I’m curious as to what sort of methods others use for rating and ranking tracks. I have one I call the “GETS” system - G-forces, E-stop Test, Tunnel Test and Supports, with 2 possible points for each of those, and maybe 2 for Smoothness – 10 possible total points. Of course, if more than one track scores the same, personal opinion has to take over for ranking purposes. I also have a “SCORE” system - Safety, Construction, Originality, Realism and Excitement, again with 2 points each. Safety covers most of what's in the "GETS" system, and Construction covers ride smoothness and supports.

Either way, some allowances probably have to be made for tunnel testing. For instance, if I see “tunnel crashes” - one tunnel sticking into another - I usually let that slide, as long as both spots are in the same block. That’s probably more common on the entry and exit of a vertical loop than anywhere else. Other considerations may have to be given when a support cross beam sticks through the bottom of the tunnel. If it’s where you’d have to lean out of the car and reach under the track to touch it, that’s one thing, but if it’s sticking inside the track ties, where it would shear off the brake fin and wheel assembly from the bottom of the train, that’s another matter entirely! 

All in all, do those methods sound fair?

I'm not even close to being that thorough. Haha.

I assume that most people know how to make tracks these days and after working with NL for idontknowhowmany years now, I can tell if there's a chance there's going to be a problem. For example, I can just sort of guess whether a train would clear an E-stop test as often you can get the hints (fast MCBR, slow elements after it etc) so I don't bother checking every ride. Same goes for tunnel testing really. Just something I've figured out over time.

I base my ratings more on style, build quality, realism etc.

I base my ratings off of build technique, flow, support structure, and general ride thrill factor. I have never given a perfect 10 for anything.

What rollercoaster in the real world do you think would come close to a perfect 10?

Haven't found one.

If I had to chose one that would score the highest, I'd probably say something like Nemesis.

Sounds pretty much like variations of my "SCORE" acronym, maybe a little more laid back! :--D In any case, supports were a lot more of a scoring category this time than in the last one, no matter what method you use.

Well, if that honor were going to go to a B&M inverted, it would be Alpie hands-down, no? :--D

Got my ratings sent in, so I guess now it's time to see what I can do for the next comp. In the meantime, has anyone deciphered any of the indistinct chatter you hear around the station in Sim mode? Most of it can't be understood, but about every 10 seconds it sounds like a guy's saying "Rick's gonna be down in the parking lot." I go by Rick myself sometimes, along with Richard, Rich, Richie, Richie-Rich, etc., which is why I wonder what I'm supposed to be doing in the parking lot! Driving the trams, like I did at SFOG? Anyway, if there are going to be voices in Sim mode, too bad they can't be screams during the ride, or even the colorful words you'd usually hear at the top of the lift! Look for all that in 2.0 maybe?

From Antinos

I have a differential equations exam Thursday, a dynamics exam Friday, and a thermo exam next Tuesday, and this is all on top of the homework that I already have to do. I completed a differential equations assignment today (10 questions that took two hours) and a mechanics of materials assignment (10 questions that took nearly six hours). I still need to finish my dynamics homework and thermo homework, plus start a paper.
If you want, you can copy and paste that into a quote box in the thread and tell him that he's not getting results for a few more days.
