M&D's Tsunami derailed

Apparently, a whole wheel assembly broke off and carriages flew off the track and landed on the ground.

Dreadful - hope the injuries aren't...

...you know. :(

EDIT: Just seen pictures - looks like the whole train came off and is a total mess on the ground. It landed on a kiddies ride.

Six ambulances and six fire engines are at M&D's theme park in North Lanarkshire after a rollercoaster crashed off the rails.

Emergency crews were called to the scene near Strathclyde Park in Motherwell at 15:37.

A number of specialist officers are also at the park.

Emergency services said the incident was ongoing, but no further information was available.

Just heard about this, hope the injuries aren't severe. Feel terrible for everyone on board, a derailing is the incredibly rare worst case scenario for a coaster.

Absolutely horrified by a roller coaster crash at M and D's.
All are safe now ! First aiders did very well until emergency services arrived.

Oh lord, hopefully the riders are all okay.

I wonder how bad a crash this was. Obviously a coaster derailment is probably worst case scenario, but I wonder at what height and speed it was travelling. It's all up in the air at the moment with this being so recent.

The fact the train is upside down in that Sky news picture makes this look pretty severe! Hope everyone is ok.

Looks like the entire train has come off the rails and stayed mostly together. Reports say it landed on top of another ride nearby.

I think the way it landed up side down may have saved everyones life as there is a sort of roof above the trains!

The wire fence has been knocked down, so it must have happened at a low level section of track.

Unsure where it derailed from at the moment, but it slammed through the fence and onto the child's ride next to it.

What the hell? How can something like this even happen with the **** of safety restrictions there are in the UK? Hopefully the are no severe injuries on this.

That is literally everyone's nightmare scenario there. Absolutely awful accident. Had to be wheel or track failure, unless the chassis split somehow.

Genuinely shocked how something could happen like this in the UK. Seriously makes you question what the M&D's maintainance must be like if the entire train derailed. Hope nobodies been hurt, but dread to think how badly this could end. Oh and what's the betting the newspapers are going to use this as an excuse to bring up The Smiler again...

Oh **** Hope everyone's ok.

Never heard of a whole train derailing before, then again has an inverted train ever derailed before?

If it is wheel failure normally you get one carriage derail and then slow the rest of the train down to a stop. Like Expedition GeForce did.

My guess is the stress on the wheels assemblies having a 'domino effect' on an inverted coaster, so once one carriage derails it puts further stress on the other wheels behind/in front causing that to derail until the whole thing comes off. Could be totally wrong though.
