India PTR - Part 9: Wonderla

Just another useless fact - The Blackpool Leisure and Amusement Consultancy Limited is actually registered to Blackpool Please Beach, I just checked a companies directory and Blooloop.

Yeah, they sold the rights to a couple of their rides and set up the consultancy company to oversee the construction of them in India. Morecambe's old Texas Tornado trains are currently running on the Southport Cyclone clone in India build by them.

Oddly, the company I worked for did a similar deal. Sold the rights to our manufacturing process and then sent the engineers from our factory over there to oversee the construction of the facility. I think we now buy our products from that factory as they did a better job than on ours and we closed our manufacturing line

Report is fab Gavin, really interesting - but you already knew that ;)

Re: India PTR - Part 5: VGP and MGM

I remember the Top Spin "Top Gun" and the "1001 Nacht" Weber carpet from German funfairs.

The Top Spin looks somewhat modified, most visibly the normally round counterweights were replaced by self-made ones. Until a few years Slagharen in the Netherlands had a Weber carpet.

Re: India PTR - Part 5: VGP and MGM

Finally got round to this, it's been a while since I've read a gavin report and I loved it as usual. Love the obscurity and some of those parks look so...well **** xD but I love the contrast of how some of them really seem to bother. I'd love to go to India to be honest, does the Uber work in the same way it does in London?

Re: India PTR - Part 5: VGP and MGM

^ As far as I know yeah. It's the same app regardless of where you're using it.

Re: India PTR - Part 5: VGP and MGM

The next day basically followed the same pattern. I had two more parks in Chennai to get, and a whole day free to get them, so woke up late, lazed around for a bit then headed out.

I’d planned to use Uber again, but the place I wanted to go was outside the city limits. The app couldn’t give me an estimated price, but I thought I’d still be able to get a car. Nope. One showed up, but couldn't take me, which was slightly annoying since it was actually closer than the parks I’d been to the previous day. I guess they were just deemed as more accessible since they were in a more touristy area along the coast.

Anyway, I got the hotel to call me a taxi. On the way to the first park I negotiated with the driver to keep him for a few hours since I figured I might get a bit stuck later. This definitely turned out to be the right thing to do as the afternoon turned out to be a bit of a pain in the arse to be honest.

I’d seen this drop tower crop up in topic on here somewhere before, but had no idea it was at this park. I was gutted/relieved that it was closed though.

Not my video (obviously, since it was closed):

I can’t remember much about the ghost train now other than it had absolutely nothing to do with Indiana Jones.

Didn’t bother:

This ride was amazing for all the wrong reasons, mostly because of the soundtrack. It doesn’t look that bad, but I feared for my life a bit.

I posted a video to CF’s Facebook page at the time, but here’s another one. You NEED the sound on.

This next coaster was a bit of a nostalgia trip. It’s the only remaining Schwarzkopf Alpenblitz coaster. The first coaster I ever rode, or at least remember riding, was one of these in Rhyl.

Then I found this!

HatZuRm.jpg

dzp84la.jpg

It was called “Hanging Coaster”, but it’s definitely in the “is it or isn’t it” category. When I sent pictures in, it was, at first, put up on RCDB as a coaster (I didn’t label it as such; it was done based on the photos), but has been taken off again now. Coaster-count have included it in the “Undefined” category though.

FXn2iQG.jpg

BRlDNVV.jpg

It kind of coasts a bit and feels quite “coastery” in parts. I counted it only after RCDB included it, but since it’s gone from there now I might reconsider, even though it’s still on Coaster-Count.

I debated whether to hang around for the two missed coasters to open, but had another park to get to and figured it would/could be closed by the time I would’ve got out of there and headed over, so I left and headed over to the final park in Chennai.

Kishkinta Theme Park

This place was closed.

I couldn’t actually see the park from the entrance area, but the gates were closed and a security told us that it hadn’t been open since the floods. There were only two crappy coasters there anyway, and I’d been pretty lucky that this was the only place closed considering what had happened just a few weeks previously.

Since I had the driver anyway, I got him to take me back to Queens Land. He wasn’t exactly ecstatic about it. They let me back in without having to pay again since I still had my ticket in my pocket and they clearly remembered me. I just got one ride each on the coasters - both crap and childhood memories destroyed – before heading back to the hotel.

I was out early the next day for a flight to the third, and final city of the trip.

Chennai – f**king awful. Apparently, Wonder La (one of their parks coming up soon) are going to build a new park there, but I don’t think it’s enough to entice me back.

There is also one that travels Switzerland (and one that is rusting away in Argentina). But yeah, it's the last one of these that operates in a fixed park.

Fab report so far, though! :D

Re: India PTR - Part 6: Queens Land

Finally got around to reading this report. Fantastic as always Gavin.

I've been waiting to hear more about that Adlabs park since it opened, really interesting to read your thoughts on it.

India has never been a country I've really wanted to visit but some of the more culture places you visited looked really nice. That train station at night also looked amazing.

Look forward to reading the next part of the report.

Re: India PTR - Part 6: Queens Land

The third and final stop was Bengalaru, formally – and probably better – known as Bangalore. I arrived around lunch time on New Year’s Eve and had plans to go out with an old friend that night, but decided to squeeze some stuff in that afternoon. I checked into the hotel and then headed to the Bangalore Palace Grounds, not too far away, which contained a small park.

The major coaster here – well, all the coasters here – was a knockoff Chinese looper from Changlong.

This is the third of this model I’ve done, out of a possible seven, and they’re horrible. This one was especially dreadful though.

Admittedly, it looked quite nice though, surrounded by trees and s**t.

RCDB doesn’t count these things, so I didn’t know they were here, but I decided a while ago that I’d count them. Essentially, they’re mini halfpipes, the only difference being that they’re propelled up the spikes – coasting back down – by power to the cars themselves instead of from the track.

Behold! The world’s most pointless cycle monorail!

GXwEvSN.jpg

I forgot to mention earlier until I just saw this picture that I had to wait a while for a ride-op to show up for the main coaster. When a few people had gathered in this kind of waiting area, someone showed up.

9U9tyzC.jpg

PV5ieN1.jpg

This thing was weird. It’s a kiddy/adult ride in one. The seats on the outside are basically a kiddy Ferris wheel, while the inside seats just invert constantly.

iWLYOYs.jpg

As I mentioned before, Fun World was part of the Bangalore Palace Grounds. The whole site was actually massive, with multiple entrances, so I ended up getting an Auto around to the actual palace.

I stopped off at a big shopping mall near my hotel on the way back to grab something to eat, check for surprise shopping-mall creds (there weren’t any) and pick up some booze to drink before meeting my friend later that evening.

Venice!

4fG6jFU.jpg

I contemplated buying a red dot to wear that evening, but figured that people might see it as negatively appropriating their culture.

6kztPca.jpg

Anyway, I met up with my friend and his friends that night, went to a bar/club with an open bar and then a house party after that. The following day was supposed to be a park day, but I spent most of it throwing up and didn’t leave my hotel room. Typical New Year’s Day then.

There are a couple more parks for this trip report which I squeezed in on the final day, but I’m off on holiday in a few hours, so will get it finished when I get back.

Hmmm, sounds like a Zamperla's Disk'O to me... ;)

Oh, am I the only person that can't view page 2? No matter what device I use, or whether it's Chrome or Firefox etc, it always crashes :(

No, page 2 is fine for me.

Nice chunk of a report again Gavin. I really like the little waiting area with a handful of seats and little canopy - brilliant!

Re: India PTR - Part 7: Fun World

I've noticed since switching to Imgur for images, the pages don't load properly for me on my work computer after I've posted it. Text is fine; lots of pictures don't show. Fine at home though.

Re: India PTR - Part 7: Fun World

I was going to start on a new report, but just realised that I didn’t bother to finish this off, so will get that done now.

As I said earlier, a planned park day went tits-up thanks to feeling like crap after New Year’s Eve. I had the whole of the 2nd though, with a flight out that night. I hadn’t seen much of the city, but the hotel was located well, so I went for a quick wander around quite early in the morning.

These things were literally everywhere:

bqBCV0b.jpg

I got back to the hotel a little before 11 to check out. The original plan, had I been doing the parks the day before, was to just use Uber to get to them. Since I’d checked out of the hotel though, and had bags with me, including a decent-sized suitcase, that wasn’t really an option. I could obviously have left them there to collect later, but that would’ve been a faff. Instead I just booked another driver for the whole day, figuring that I could leave the bags in the car and get dropped off directly at the airport after the parks.

First of the two parks then:

Innovative Film City

The entrance and area inside was pretty impressive and boded well.

There were tours available to see some actual film sets – it’s used fairly regularly apparently - but I wouldn’t have known when any of it was and I was pushed for time.

I didn’t bother queuing up for the Bow and Arrow “attraction”.

RBCKPfk.jpg

There was a museum of tribal cultures, which was just a bunch of models. I walked through quickly to have a look.

Next to it was this crap. A range of “sets” for people to get photos in basically, but just sooooooo piss-poor.

Haunted Mansion was a pretty big walkthrough.

py1rdZh.jpg

It was spread over two levels with totally pitch black stairs up and down. Absolutely lethal and was necessary to get phones out so as not to go arse-over-tit. It was bad really. Cheaply done, but extensive, taking about 15 minutes.

I probably spent about 2 hours here. I had to wait about twenty minutes for the cred, but since everything else was basically a walkthrough attraction, there were no queues despite it being busy.

The second park of the day, and final park of this trip, was just a 15 minute drive away. I wanted to get that in here now, but I’m at “work” and it’s almost time to go home. I’ll get that up tomorrow.

Ha those waxworks are brilliant!
I'd much rather look at bad waxworks - so much more entertaining .

Re: India PTR - Part 8: Innovative Film City

The last park of the trip – well, the last thing I did at all before heading to the airport – was about a fifteen-minute drive away. I think I got there a little after one, and figured I’d need to get out of there by about half four to make it to the airport in time.

Wonderla

This place was quite a bit bigger than I thought, and was actually really busy, so I stumped up the extra tenner to get a fastpass, which could be used on literally everything to skip the queues. Some queues, like for the drop tower, were approaching an hour, but literally nobody else that I saw was using fsatpass, so I managed to walk on to everything.

The dominating feature of the park is a big wheel on top of a tower. Pretty impressive really.

ADCTHqe.jpg

Another Indian park, another one of these f**king things. I got it out of the way quickly so that I’d have time to dry off. This one at least looked really nice.

I didn’t do the top spin. Totally sick of them. I don’t think I’ve seen this model before though.

YEY9o2L.jpg

They had two tower rides, this was the smaller of the two, which I didn’t ride. Just realized how s**t and blurry the picture is. Apologies.

IO4Uk19.jpg

The park was actually pretty strong on flat rides. I gave this one a go because I don’t think I’d done one before. Not bad. No need to rush on one again.

tQ4ytXR.jpg

I skipped the Energy Storm though. I’ve done a few and I’m really not a fan.

0vynPca.jpg

The boomerang was still under construction. This was one that I was hoping might be open since RCDB had it listed as opening in 2015, but I was pretty sure wouldn’t be. It’s opening this summer. This is now its fourth home after two parks in Australia and Alabama Adventure.

meNEIFi.jpg

I’d only seen one of these before, a Moser Hoppla, at Wonder Island in Russia. That one was pretty decent, so it’s a shame this one was closed.

7rH7pJO.jpg

Have some more pictures of the biggest coaster here until the Boomerang opens.

49H02tk.jpg

lSEZPBt.jpg

They had a Mixer which was actually open. F**king horrible things.

FSbME08.jpg

EELs0TP.jpg

I didn’t do the frisbee. Again, kind of over them – even the smallest Chinese parks tend to have one - unless they’re the giant variety and even then I can take them or leave them these days.

4DUrQFn.jpg

I did the wheel though. You take a lift up the tower, which has a viewing platform all the way around it for excellent views over the park.

7tBShTb.jpg

eRvP0NZ.jpg

Like most parks I went to in India, there was a water park. It was included in the entrance price, but I had no time for it. I should probably try more water parks to be honest. They don’t hold a massive appeal, but I haven’t given them a real chance.

qNal3ux.jpg

The wheel itself seems kind of superfluous since the views don’t change from those you get on the observation deck. Yeah, it’s higher, but the cars are small and cramped and are basically cages.

By the time I got off, they were doing some work on the boomerang.

w2z7g8n.jpg

2Z1YbTE.jpg

Exciting.

There were two other coasters here, Termite Train and Termite Coaster, both housed inside this termite hill.

fBfNRyI.jpg

The “bigger” one was just a basic Big Apple, but I think it’s probably the biggest effort I’ve seen made for one apart from maybe Valle degli Gnomi (the original big apple) in Italy. Without the fastpass, it would’ve been a 40-minute wait!

CKbnyXc.jpg

71P0Ota.jpg

bMdlSu6.jpg

The second coaster is just a powered oval thing that travels around the base of the “big” coaster.

k5dN8AW.jpg

ycDxonm.jpg

TZx9VrV.jpg

They had two sets of dodgems, the second one for woman and kids only. Weird.

aj5Xgj8.jpg

Some more flat rides:

xUz0bKo.jpg

Xy9adjp.jpg

The Dungeon Ride was run to a schedule. It had been open in the morning and was reopening at 4:15. I was pretty much done with the park about 45 minutes before that, but decided to hang around to get it done.

SRx9NmR.jpg

It was very good actually. Large, individual cars holding around 16 people run on a continuous chain. At least that’s what it seemed like The whole thing moves at the same time, with each car being brought into a new scene, usually with doors at either end to close things off, where various s**t happens.

It was half four when I got off, which was perfect timing to get me to the airport really, which was about an hour and a half away. The parks on this day were outside the city to the south, while the airport is out to the north.

I really liked this park. After Adlabs Imagica, it was easily the best one in terms of an overall package. It was clean, well-maintained with a nice atmosphere and had a decent ride selection, even if the coasters weren’t up to much. Wonderla have another park in Kochi, with plans to build a couple more in the near future. They’re never going to be a world-changer, but for a small, national chain they see to be doing a good job.

The India trip as a whole was great. I’d been putting off going for ages after hearing very mixed reviews from friends, usually involving dirt, beggars, poverty etc. I’m not going to pretend to be an expert based on one fairly short trip, but I didn’t have any issues with the place. Chennai was a dump, sure, but I was never hassled and never felt unsafe anywhere; the people in all three cities were lovely actually. Mumbai was much better than I expected and Bangalore was really nice and loads of fun.

I’m thinking I might do another India trip at the same time next year – well, this year now - taking in some different places. It’s obviously huge, and I didn’t even touch on any of the more famous sights since I was wanting to get parks in and there really aren’t any around Agra, Jaipur etc. We’ll see anyway.

Done! Yay!

Nice report! I remember seeing that Boomerang on RCDB, and noticed that they used a stock photo of the SFStL one. Didn't think they'd match the color scheme! Also, that water coaster thing looks pretty good. It'd be even better with some fresh paint on the tracks.

I like big-wheels and I like observation towers ; so just how great is a big-wheel-on-top-of-an-observation-tower :)
(even if the wheel was a bit shoddy)

And the extra-themed big-apple - great stuff. Cool looking park that one, nice way to end a trip it seems.
