How much negative g-force is too much?

-1.5 g's is usually the maximum amount on coasters today, but as SC said -2 g's would probably be the absolute maximum that would ever be allowed on any ride...

Wait, is 2g the maximum a coaster can pull in a spike or sustain? Also, would strangling yourself, thereby restricting blood flow to your head, mean that you could survive higher negative g forces?

What is the negative G force on slammer? My head always feels funny on that, but on coasters with big airtime, my head doesn't feel funny, my legs just stretch a bit.

^Probably spike. Negative Gs play havoc with the body much more than positive ones do. Umm... not sure about strangling yourself. It could prevent issues in the brain, but it wouldn't stop other internal organs getting all "wft?".

Slammer's negative G force is sustained. That's probably why it feels different. You're experiencing that feeling for several whole cycles, on a coaster the strong airtime last no-where near as long.

Does anyone know the science behind why we can sustain more positive then negative G?

It's to do with blood pressure.

With positive G, all the blood is forced down into your body and legs. You can manage high G's because the body can still get enough blood pumped to the brain - your heart is a good device. After about 5 G's (sustained) you start to get problems though and will black out from that point (depending on physical health etc).

Negative G's are the opposite. All the blood rushes to your head. Your head isn't as big as the rest of your body, so the blood quickly floods your head and brain and causes a "red out". Obviously a flooded brain is bad news as the pressure easily pops the delicate blood vessels.

neg g

Would you have to much negative G if you had a moderate amount of speed while entering a over vert of vertical drop. The ejector feeling on the over vert would be awsome! :--D

^First, everything would appear to be red for a second, followed by an intense pain in the head. Then, everything would go black. If you're really un/lucky, you'd be able to feel the rest of the ride, which, given the drop, wouldn't be too pleasant. And don't foget the headache. If you'd ever wake up, it'd be in hospital.

Yeah. Awesome.
