Favourite Computer/Video Game Music

I thought this nerdy subject deserved a topic of it's own. Whether it's that epic prelude from your favourite RPG, spine-chilling orchestral scores or the scarily nostalgic NES music that sends chills down your spine... Yeah, share your favourites here! :)

Super Fantasy Zone - Boss Theme
This used to scare the living **** out of me! The stage music fades out, and seconds later you're greeted with the heaviest 16-bit bass, ever! Nothing can prepare you for these excrutiatingly difficult bosses! Nothing!

Kingdom Hearts 2 - Sanctuary (Opening scene)
I admit it, I cried at the final cutscene of Kingdom Hearts. I suppose I was like 12, but wow, that seriously got deep. Simple and Clean was a beautifully written song, but when I heard Sanctuary, I was taken to another world. Probably one of my favourite 'pop' songs of all time, the chorus just soars, and oh, the chills. Fabulous way to start a fabulous game!

Sonic The Hedgehog - Star Light Zone
This ones very personal and brings back a lot of memories. In my early childhood, I rarely made it to this zone, and when I did, I couldn't do it. The tune brings me back to when me and my old best friend (who I never see anymore) used to play the **** out of this game, I gave him the controller at the end of Labyrinth zone because he managed to beat the boss. Not too hard now, but so nostalgic!

Also a massive fan of Final Fantasy VI and X's sound track. Crono Cross is amaze. Zone of the Enders as well. Psygnosis games generally consisted of awesome atmospheric moody music <3. What else, TWEWY's awesome stupid jpop and jrap extravaganza. Can't forget the opening tracks to Pinball dreams and fantasies. Chris Hulsbeck can have children. Louts 3 has choonz even my sister likes. Ikaruga, REZ, No More Heroes, Dynasty Warriors, KH of course, El Shaddai, Panzer Dragoon, pretty much all of Shin Megami Tensei, Cave Story, The majority of the Touhou Project, Pegasus had a bawllin intro song, The Chaos Engine, Ruff 'n' Tumble, Zool, Theme hospital, RCT...

Should I stop Geeking out?

Forgot to add Final Fantasy to my list, argh... Just reminded me of Final Fantasy XIII, as much as that game disappointed me, their was that one song that popped up throughout, what was it now...

This!

In fact that one scene is one of my favourites out of the series, when the music comes in it brings a tear to my eye.

Game still sucked though!

Big fan of the Guitar Hero soundtracks. Does that count? :)

I'm hardly a gamer so I don't know too many game soundtracks, but I do really like the music from the Halo series.

SimCity 3000 also had a pretty sweet soundtrack. Great mix of some ambient, some jazz, & some experimental electronica-type stuff. This was probably my favorite song:

Another game whose soundtrack I loved was F-Zero X, even though I'm not really into that kind of power metal. It just fits the style and feel of that game so perfectly:

My favorite piece of music from a 'classic' game is probably the main theme from the Legend of Zelda series. I especially like some of the orchestral renditions of it that have been recorded over the years.. just love the massive scale of its sound:

The Chemical Plant Zone theme from Sonic 2 was pretty dope. Funky as hell:

Super Mario Kart & Super Mario World for the SNES had some great music as well. And Mario Kart 64 had probably my single favorite song from a video game, the Rainbow Road theme:

I tend not to notice to be honest. They're either "splash screen anthems" or repetitive rubbish because games are fluid and the music has to try and be a best fit.

Neither are really actually great pieces of music I would generally listen to. I used to like some when I was younger, and I have a tape I spliced together (from cover tapes off computer magazines) with music from Outrun, After Burner, Space Harrier, Ninja Warriors (I loved that game) and a few others. I haven't listened to it though for over twenty years :p

Some games though get it right. You've got the obvious musical based ones like Rez, Child of Eden, Sound Shapes and the like. I love playing a game in time to a good musical track, but for those games the music is an integral part where the game would fail without it.

Then there's stuff like Heavy Rain, where the music can be applied in the same way it is in a film, because the game is presented in a filmatic way. They're very few and far between though.

Lucasarts had a brilliant system on their first Star wars games though and I think they applied it to others. The music would subtly change to different tunes depending on the situation. So even a live and fluid game could keep the music brooding and atmospheric and "right" at all times. A true soundtrack is one you don't even realise is increasing pleasure.

Then you have actually really good intrusive music. NIN doing the Quake soundtrack, or the two songs that end the two Portal titles. Plants Vs Zomibes too  Music written especially for the game as a "song".

But yeah, there's a reason you don't see the shelves of a music shop lined with "the best of computer game music" CDs ;)

I'm assuming one of the other big reasons you don't get best of CD's is the fact people just rip them directly and put them up for download for free.

I'm sure dozens of people do, yes, therefore completely eroding a very valid market :p

A large majority of games soundtracks aren't available to buy anyway. It's doomed to never work regardless of whether they try to sell it off or not. the only real way they can do it is if it's really **** good, ala Journey, and they play it off as trying to support the artist out of kindness, again can only be done with a game like Journey and being loveable like TGC, if EA or activision tried that people would just tell then to **** off.

There are really only 3 games that I love the music for, and will listen to as stand alone tracks

Super Meat Boy/Binding of Issac

I put these together because they are both produced by the same man, and they both while sound very different from each other, sound different from every other Video Game soundtrack out there, and actually both stand alone as great music without the games

VVVVVV

Possibly my favorite chip tune, because it not only sounds great, and fits the game well, but it's so well produced and almost makes the game what it is. To Be honest if the music wasn't so good I woulsn't have made it through the entire game and just quit out.

Honorable Mention:
Killer 7
While the music is good, there is only one track I can listen as a standalone piece.

Skyrim is the one that jumps to mind, that game has an amazing soundtrack <3

There's so many times when you're doing something awesome like fighting a dragon and that pipes up and it's magic <3

Though both Portal games have fantastic soundtracks anyway.

Going to get the obvious out of the way... but the COD4: Multiplayer lobby music was immense. Can't listen to it without hearing the other sounds of players joining and moaning about which map was up next e.t.c

Mario 64's Water levels music were quality also...

ALL Pilotwings music from the SNES because the game was just epic and I spent a silly amount of time on it as a child :) Particularly the rocket-launcher/jetpack level music.

Most of my favourites have gone already:

Sim City 3000 (posted earlier) continues to be the only game from which I have music on my mp3 library. My favourite is this one (closely followed by Conrete Jungle. I love weird time signatures):

Stuff from Mario 64 and Rainbow Road from Mario Kart 64 are awesome too. But my favourite stuff to come out of Nintendo is from Mario Galaxy. This stuff just feels epic:

My favourite bit of perfectly timed music in any game ever is at the end of test chamber 19. Most of the start of the game has no major soundtrack, but just at the climatic moment, this starts playing and it's perfect to get your pulse racing.

YES! I knew I'd recently heard a soundtrack doing the Lucasarts thing and doing it as well (better probably actually). Brilliant and fitting.
