Sam and I have been unable to travel out of the country much because we started dating during the pandemic and the borders have just reopened on a permanent basis a few months ago. We kind of knew we wanted it to include some coasters and potentially some sporting events, so we had been pretty set on Boston/New York for what seemed to be the ideal mixture of culture and coasters. Our other ideas were Halifax and Seattle, but as enthusiasts who have been robbed the past few years of riding basically anything, we put those ideas to the wayside. I found out my stepmom’s niece was getting married in Vegas over the Canadian long weekend in May, and although we weren’t invited to the actual wedding itself, we were invited to hangout with family after the wedding in Vegas for the week. Well, Sam and I liked the idea of Vegas because we both enjoy a bit of gambling and drinking, but the long weekend prices were exponentially more than what we’d pay on other dates so he just looked at me and said “are you thinking the same thing I’m thinking?” which I knew immediately referred to Magic Mountain. Luckily for him, his favourite baseball team (the Tigers) were playing the Dodgers in Los Angeles in late April so things fell into place to get both of those things done.

Thursday April 28- Pre-Flight Night

The only thing left to book for us last minute was parking, which in hindsight was a bad idea to wait because most of the cheap Park n’ Fly lots were booked up. Our flight was scheduled to leave at 6:00 AM so I toyed around with the idea of just doing a sleep, park, fly package which ended up being about $50 more, but split between two people it made sense for three reasons. One, we had to get up stupid early to fly and it would afford us a little bit more sleep. Two, we were getting restless and both finished work at a reasonable hour. Three, my dad was picking up Zephyr at 5:30 that night to start watching him, so we decided to just book that and we headed over there around 6:15 PM.

The trip was off to a funny start (well, funny to be because I laugh at chaos) when we crossed into America, paid the toll, and Sam accidentally turned right back onto the ramp that said “no re-entry into America.” I have no idea how he did this because we live right next to the border and cross over sometimes multiple times over the span of a week. I was stifling a laugh because he was pretty mad, and since we were past the point of no return we were pretty much headed back to Canada, taking the hit on another $16 in tolls for the mistake. We ended up just pulling a U-turn right on the bridge, and surprisingly the man was pretty understanding about it despite thinking we were probably idiots. After that debacle we were finally headed towards the airport which is only about a 25 minute drive from the border.

I knew I wouldn’t end up going to bed early because Sam wanted to watch the Toronto Raptors game and I also wasn’t ready to start off the trip by being a boring old person and heading right to bed. We went across the way to the Embassy Suites where we ended up having about three drinks each before heading back and going to bed. I was going to cap mine at two, but my boyfriend told the bartender I was probably going to steal drinks of his third (way to discretely say I’m a mooch) so she brought me a small 8oz one on the house. The Raptors lost, but the night was fun and we were in bed by about 10:30.

Friday April 29- Flying, Drinks, the Cecil, Food, Getting Our insides Torched, and More Drinks

I got up around 2:15 feeling partially refreshed but mostly excited. We got the 4 AM shuttle to the airport where we were through the baggage drop line and security. Detroit Metro really can’t be beat in that terminal, it’s always so efficient. Unfortunately it was too early to get an airport beer or really an airport anything at that point so my options were crusty, overpriced sandwiches or avocados and crackers. I picked the latter, ate it pretty briskly and just sat at the terminal and waited until boarding.

I was glad the flight left on time considering it’s Spirit and they changed our itineraries for both of our Spirit flights about 4 or 5 times each over the course of the past few months. Full disclosure though, I do not like being a passenger very much in a commercial aircraft. I like to be in control (well, not of an Airbus because unfortunately I’m not that qualified yet) or at least be in the cockpit to see what is happening, but fortunately this feeling usually passes after just a few minutes. The rest of the flight was smooth and it’s always really cool flying above my home airport when I’m going on a trip.

We landed sometime between 8 and 9 and although the process of getting the bags was pretty fast, the car rental was a bit of a faff considering we had to get a shuttle to the Uber stand and then an Uber to the Westin which then only had one employee working the car rental reservation desk. I guess that’s what we get for going with a place called Nu Car Rental instead of a more reputable company, but they ended up turning out fine, they just weren’t in an ideal location. We got our white Nissan Altima, which funny enough is what Sam drives at home, and headed down to the Redondo Beach area since we couldn’t check into our Air BnB yet. It was also still too early to really go anywhere, but we scoped out a place that starts serving drinks at 8 AM so that’s where we headed. We both are a fan of dive bars so we were really excited by how seedy and divey Pats II looked, and how it had that community feel to it. After a Google search it appeared as though the name had changed from Pats to Pats II due to the bouncer being killed a few years ago, but that aside it certainly a place for older regulars to go and pretty much the exact thing we were looking for when we wanted to go to a dive bar! The bartender was an old peach named Annie who poured a strong drink (I made a completely sarcastic remark about how the super strong drink wasn’t strong enough so she took it back and poured a bunch more, what a gem) and gave us Reese’s chocolates.

You can pretty much smell the musty walls and the smoke from that picture!

Sam still had to eventually drive the car to the Air BnB so we decided not to get too silly there and drove to the beach area where they have a nice boardwalk area and some good food options with nice views. It was a bit too chilly to use the beach so we walked where the shops were and then stopped into El Torito to have lunch. We didn’t really have any set plans for the day so there was a lot of eating and drinking on the agenda. I decided not to have a huge lunch, but it ended up being pretty big anyway because America and their fricken’ portions. I ate about half of my plate and then my mindset went to wanting to save my appetite for the legendary fried chicken we were going to have later in the day! This ended up being a big regret because the food at El Toritio was great (the corn cake was incredible), and the drink was one of the best I think I’ve ever had.

After walking along the beach back to our car, I asked Sam how far the Cecil Hotel would be from our route simply because I’m morbid. Turned out that it wasn’t too much of a detour (we even got a glimpse of the TANKS) and neither was the funeral home from Six Feet Under which is still one of the best shows I have ever watched. At first I didn’t think Skid Row looked like it did on television but then we got to a part with a lot of homeless people in tents, which is not only sad but not somewhere I’d want to get out of the car and walk around.

We picked up some beers and wine at the store near where we were staying, which was in an area called Eagle Rock. The Air BnB was very nice, being an entire guesthouse with a rooftop deck and a great view!

Since we had no true plans that day, we had some drinks up on the patio before proceeding to order dinner at Howlin’ Rays. This place gets lines that are hours long at times, but we ended up just paying for delivery which took about 45 minutes. As a person who owns about 50 hot sauces and always orders the hottest sauce on the menu, I went with one of the hottest ones feeling confident in my choice. I got the second hottest called Howlin’ which use to be the hottest until someone wanted to kill someone and added something hotter, and Sam chose hot.

This ended up being hilarious after the fact, but my goodness the second I took a bite I couldn’t believe what I was feeling. Someone on YouTube described it as radioactive fallout in their mouth and they weren’t far off. I am known to be a drama queen at times but no joke Sam and I had about 3 bites each and for about 25 minutes after we were just downing water upon water upon water, which is the worst thing you can do but we had no milk at our disposal. I ended up saving the leftovers and eating his hot tenders which I could tolerate but my sandwich was just something else. I felt it burn my insides as it went into my stomach. Not fun and even though I could say it was a waste of $55 or whatever it cost, it was something I won’t ever forget. I just wish I hadn’t skimped on the El Torito earlier! The chicken itself was actually excellent but if I go back I will not be getting anything near the level of heat I got.

I didn’t take anymore photos for the night and though I was pretty jet lagged and feeling slight abdominal pain, we trudged to Johnny’s Sports Bar which had a really cool vibe that I wish I was more awake to enjoy! A ton of Dodgers fans which made us more hyped for the game the next day, and a really friendly crowd. One regular even left the bar to go home and get Sam some sports memorabilia!

Saturday April 30th

After a pretty decent sleep and having fought off any jet lag (I always get it so much worse going over to the west coast compared with anywhere else I’ve ever been), we had a morning that was up in the air in terms of plans so we opted to go to Griffith Park Observatory since I had never been as well as spend a little bit of time at the Santa Monica Pier since Sam had never been. We didn’t spend a great deal of time at each one since we had to be back at the Air BnB for about 3, but we still got a decent amount done. Because I am lazy and time was of the essence, we paid the $10 parking at the top of the hill rather than the $4 about a quarter mile down the hill. The view was excellent, with the Hollywood sign on one side, downtown on the other, and a lot of hills in between. I realized I had never taken a photo of the Hollywood sign on previous trips so I had to get some touristy shots with that.

After we had enough of the view (damn, some of the golf courses I could see looked awesome but that’ll have to be for another time), we took a pretty suburban route to Santa Monica. It’s such a trendy, hip place and I’ve always enjoyed my time there even though I don’t think there is an insane amount to do.

I had already been to Pacific Park on a prior visit, but I told my boyfriend I’d go back on the roller coaster if he wanted to do it since it’s quite iconic even though I could get more excitement sitting in a chair. He saw the $11 price tag and decided it wasn’t worth it, so on we went.

It was also just a tiny bit too chilly for the beach, but I do think that beach has phenomenal views! We walked the pier and realized they had the Lombardy Trophy at the end, but neither of us were really interested in that and I had some air hockey business to attend to. I can’t pass up a chance to show off my skills, which were put to the test considering I only beat Sam by one point. I tried to tell him I wasn’t trying as hard as I usually do, but I definitely was.

I was kind of in the mood for seafood, and my stomach was definitely telling me it was time to eat. Although the restaurant we chose didn’t have a stellar selection of fish or crustaceans, I wanted a beer and something lighter anyway so I got some calamari. The view from the patio was great and I saw some interesting messages being written in the air by what I’d imagine are drones.

We had a little bit of time after our lunch and headed over to the Third Street Promenade despite neither of us being huge shoppers. It had some good stores and was fun to walk around, though.

After freshening up at the Air BnB, it was time to head towards the stadium for the ballgame! We wanted to beat the traffic which prompted us getting an Uber as opposed to taking public transportation, which only ended up being $14 after both of us thought it’d cost around $50. Kind of made up for the rip off parking we got in Santa Monica! Since it was still early and we weren’t planning on meeting up with Sam’s uncle, cousins, and their kids for a little while yet, we of course hit yet another bar. This one was a bit interesting actually, I believe it was called Melody Bar in the middle of Chinatown and it had a very mismatched feel to it. We only had one or two and started our walk up the hill to the stadium which was quite uphill and taxing for this lazy woman, but at least we got to skip the car line.

279452232_10166350898330343_1376393470305636506_n.jpg

about 3/4ths up the hill, a girl shouted out her car window that I couldn’t have my purse with me. We both should have known better since we have gone to lots of events this year and they only allow clear bags. With a lack of lockers and my purse literally being weeks old, I had no other choice but to discretely shove my purse into a thick bush behind a porta potty in hopes that it would still be there upon my return.

We met up with Sam’s family at Golden Road Brewing which is in a recently constructed area of the stadium that looks rather nice, not that I’d been there prior to compare how it looked before. His family was really friendly and warm, and we all had fun just shooting the **** for a while before we split up to go to our seats.

The game turned out awesome, with Clayton Kershaw getting the franchise lead in strikeouts (a big deal for my boyfriend to see since he just saw Miggy get his 3000th base hit a few weeks ago as well) and the Tigers coming out with the only win in that series. The Dodger dog was mediocre but the garlic fries were awesome and so was the weather and the actual ballgame itself! Sadly after the game we had trouble finding his uncle's car, but my purse was still behind the bush which was a bonus!

It was late by the time we got back to the hotel but we had some Pliny the Elder in the fridge which is one of the top beers in many people's opinions. I only had a little bit since I was planning to get up fairly early for Knotts, and unfortunately I didn't think it was subjectively outstanding because I just am not a fan of that style of beer.

Sunday May 1st- Knotts Berry Farm

We had anticipated getting to the park closer to 10:00 despite the 9:00 opening because we had Fast Lane and there's not that much to do at Knotts, but I had trouble sleeping in the morning so I just got up and showered anyway for an earlier than planned departure. We got to the park just after 9:00 with anticipation for Ghostrider since it was one of the coasters we've ogled over since we started dating. I had missed it on a previous visit due to a variety of circumstances (mainly a late shuttle and an employee who had never seen a Canada's Wonderland Platinum Pass before) so I was looking forward to staying in the park for both a daytime and night ride on it.

We parked, and I had started to panic when everything began testing with Ghostrider and Xcelerator standing there stagnant. Now, this could partially be my fault because I was having such cred anxiety about Magic Mountain that I had neglected to check the scheduled ride closures at Knotts, but I knew Ghostrider had been running days prior so I had imagined nothing had changed.

Well, it did. We got to the park and both coasters were scheduled to be down for the day as well as Montezooma's which wasn't as big of a deal since it's something I had been on before and it wasn't that great. Our moods changed swiftly, especially since we had already purchased our Fast Lane and didn't want to just leave the park with nothing to show for our $110 USD.

279453753_10166353035505343_7412941619368820514_n.jpg

Our first ride of the day was Jaguar, which I actually kind of enjoyed. It doesn't really do a whole lot at all, but I don't mind rides like that anymore. A good family coaster or a gateway coaster for those trying to bridge the gap between kiddie coasters and something a little more intense.

279513549_10166353035710343_8173393491521866649_n.jpg

We walked by a closed Xcelerator which looks stunning with the new colours, but I can't really find much information on why it has been closed well beyond the closure for the new paint job. To be fair I haven't really sifted the internet too in depth to find out, but it's annoying when two of the best coasters in a park's lineup are down at the same time.

279397815_10166353036170343_6720003895962025903_n.jpg

I had only previously been to the right half of the park before since I ran out of time in 2012, so the Boardwalk and Western themed areas were new for me. I was surprised at how nice the park was throughout, with Boardwalk areas sometimes looking like "we couldn't bother with trees so here is your slab of concrete we're going to market as a boardwalk" at other parks.

279457832_10166353036635343_5544453138797140368_n.jpg

I figured we might as well get on a good coaster, so we rode Hangtime

279523336_10166353036465343_1886062588852589987_n.jpg

Hangtime was... Good. There's really no other way to put it because it doesn't stand out in a big way and it's certainly nowhere near bad. It seems to be a crowd pleaser and the vertical lift/drop are incredible, but the rest is a bunch of decent, graceful inversions which is exactly what I expected. I do have to say, the pop of airtime close to the end of the ride is fantastic though! It was fun to see Sam's reaction to his first vertical lift hill, and I ended up getting two rides on it both in the front throughout the course of the day.

We were obviously bummed out about the day so far, so we decided to get a snack and see if Disney had any reservation slots open for the day since it was just down the road and it was still very early. Unfortunately the reservations for the main park were full, and the only way we could do it is if we had purchased a Park Hopper pass for $194 which we weren't willing to do. Oh well, the onion rings were good and we decided we'd make the most of Knotts and try to keep our spirits as high as possible! We were still at a park, after all.

CoastRider was next on the list, and apart from a kid's tooth falling out on the train prior to ours, it was a pretty mediocre ride which I obviously expected.

I hadn't really heard much about Beary Tales, but it was included in the Fast Lane and I was trying to get my money's worth. I assumed it was a shooter or something similar, and I was right. A budget version of Toy Story, but still fun even though I got my ass handed to me!

On the way over to Timber Mountain Log Ride, I saw Calico Mine Train which, not really being familiar with Knott's Berry Farm's lineup, thought might be a mine train cred of some sort. Well, I got in the cart along with a bunch of 5 year olds and realized that wasn't the case, but I do kind of enjoy rides like this and I thought it was kind of cool and relaxing.

Timber Mountain Log Ride ended up being our longest wait of the day even with Fast Lane, but we still got on in about 15 minutes compared to the 2 hour standby line. I really enjoyed it and thought the entire area and ride was well themed! If I hadn't come across a POV of it recently I'd have been really surprised and maybe would have even mistakenly skipped it.

279468584_10166353037550343_4598217764676513796_n.jpg

We walked over to Pony Express which I rode by myself. Again, thankful for Fast Lane at this point because it had an hour line and the ride is literally 12 seconds long which is why I told the ride operator I wasn't taking the front seat away from a kid who just wasted an hour standing in the queue for this ride. The launch was fun, but when we hit the brakes a young girl behind me even blurted out that the wait wasn't worth it!

I wanted to give the rapids a try, and although the area surrounding the rapids is really nice, the rapids themselves were pretty underwhelming. I laughed the entire way around though because Sam was frantic about his velcro seatbelt and then the guy across from me lost his hat. I don't like to get drenched on rides, but I probably could have gotten more wet dipping my toe into a puddle. Stop with the disappointments, Knotts! I can't take it anymore.

279626470_10166353037820343_8587767213280839580_n.jpg

We walked through the Ghost Town area to check it out and torture ourselves under the shadow of a closed Ghostrider. That area of the park is consistent with the rest of the park in that it's nice and well kept.

I wanted to ride Sierra Sidewinder again because I remembered liking it, and this time was no different. Sam sat off because he doesn't like spinning, but it was far more intense than I had anticipated and just a lot of fun throughout. A solid family coaster, and with their two best rides down I guess this one becomes the second best in the park.

I walked over to Camp Snoopy but the kiddie coaster had a long wait and it looked like it was about 10 feet high so I gave it a pass, plus I didn't know if I could get on without a kid and it's mortifying to even remotely look creepy in front of that many onlookers now that I have a child of my own!

We saved Silver Bullet for last, and for good reason because my man literally dies after every B&M invert he rides because he hates being underneath the track and hates too many whippy inversions, so this will likely be the last one he ever does. I thought it was actually a pretty fun, mid-tier B&M invert and I kind of enjoyed the slow, gradual pick up of speed down the shallow first drop.

We left the park around 2:30 and ended up giving our Fast Lane bracelets to a mom and her son since there were still hours left until the park closed. We were actually there longer than I anticipated, and though I still enjoyed the day, some of the events were understandably a big let down for us. I checked out the berry store while Sam hovered over a bush outside ready to hurl, because I prioritize berry jam over his well being :p

We stayed fairly low key for the rest of the night with him having a midday nap while I had the rest of my wine on the upstairs patio. We went out for dinner at a small bar in Eagle Rock, where we had mozzarella sticks and flatbread as well as the worst rye I've ever had the misfortune of tasting. It's called Rock n Rye and according to Google, it's a blend of citrus, pretty low end rye, and crystallized sugar. 0/10 would not recommend to a friend, but the food was good!

We had an early night and went back after just a few drinks to get a good sleep for Magic Mountain in the morning!
