Your Year in Review: 2019 edition on page 5

I’ll be back after Winter Wonderland... :)

Your Credit Approach at a New Park

For financial and location reasons I don’t get to go to theme parks very often and when I do I’m usually with friends or family who aren’t enthusiasts. So it would be sort of odd (/impolite) if I was more focused on getting creds than enjoying the day with them. Usually I just have a good time...

Theme park YouTubers: what do you think of them?

If you don’t take them too seriously, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the majority of them. Obviously some are a little obnoxious but that’s YouTube for you in general. I’ll admit to watching TPW’s vlogs sometimes when my anxiety / insomnia really kicks in at night: it’s just...

Your first, favourite and least favourite coaster in each country/US state you've visited

Well, this will be straightforward. England First: Nickelodeon Streak @ BPB (back when it was called Rollercoaster) Favourite: Colossus @ Thorpe (yes, really) Least favourite: Turbo @ Brighton Pier Should be able to add Japan next year :)

    Most Obscure Coaster you've ridden

Probably Cliffhanger at Blackgang Chine. Only rode it once or twice on a school trip about ten years ago. Ironically I now live about 30 minutes away from the park on but haven't been back, although I did pass it on the bus the other day. They've repainted it a sort of rust-brown colour. I miss...

What is the wettest water ride you've ever been on?

I've never been anything but soaked to the skin from head to toe after riding Tidal Wave. I'd go on most water rides regardless of the weather but I can't bring myself to ride TW when it isn't boiling hot, would feel like pneumonia waiting to happen. Haven't been on Valhalla yet though.

    Your Defunct Roller Coaster List

If we’re counting relocations, Space Invader 2 at BPB. If not, nowt 🤠

Nostalgic Love for not very good rides?

I second Quantum at Thorpe for sure. The first time I went was on a school trip when I was 13 and the park was almost empty save for us and one other school (it was mid-week in early spring during term time). Because most rides were walk-on a very chilled out ride operator let us ride Quantum...

What is your favourite drop tower?

Not sure about “favourite” since I’m not really a drop tower person but in terms of sticking in my mind, Detonator at Thorpe Park is probably the only ride I’ve been on to this day that left me physically shaking for upward of 10 minutes afterwards. Could only go on Rumba Rapids and the teacups...

What is your top 10 to do list?

In no particular order... 1) Hakugei @ Nagashima Spa Land 2) Ultra Twister @ Nagashima Spa Land 3) Steel Vengeance @ Cedar Point 4) Lightning Rod @ Dollywood 5) Olympia Looping 6) Mindbender @ Galaxyland 7) Oblivion @ Alton Towers 8) Nemesis @ Alton Towers 9) The Big One @ Blackpool...

    Thorpe Park Updates

I still haven’t been on Derren Brown’s Rail Replacement Bus Service despite having been to Thorpe twice since it was built. The first time we queued for half an hour only for the ride to break down (and we weren’t in the mood to queue for it again on a day when some of the other major rides were...

What is your bucket list coaster for each continent?

North America: Too many to list but Mindbender, Steel Vengeance and The Beast are all up there. I’ve never been to America or wanted to go there for any reason other than coasters honestly. Europe: Nemesis most probably, if only so everyone will stop telling me how much I need to ride it every...

    Smoothest coaster you've ever ridden?

Probably The Swarm as well for me, although given that my main coaster experiences outside of Thorpe were either at BPB several years ago or at smaller parks / piers in the UK I haven’t had much experience of butter smooth coasters to compare it to 😛

    What makes an enthusiast?

I’m in a similar situation to you Ami! On the autistic spectrum, very intensely interested in rollercoasters and spend a lot of time reading up on them but haven’t had the opportunity to travel much or ride as many as I’d like so my cred count is low. You’re not alone (and your question has...

What was the coaster that helped you brave your fears, and what were they?

Mine was Nemesis Inferno at Thorpe Park. I know it sounds silly but I’m from England and not well-travelled outside of the country (and within the country I’ve only been to a few theme parks) so I was really anxious about getting on my first proper ‘extreme’ coaster. I loved it a lot though...
