Roller Coaster Ranking System

TMCoasters

Mega Poster
Hi everyone! I am currently working on research to determine a list of the best roller coasters on Earth. To do so I have developed a new polling system. I have devised a list of potentially world class rides below. From that list you select the ones that you have ridden and rank them in order from best to worst. The calculation will be based upon how amny of these roller coasters that you have ridden. If you have been on 50 from the list, your number one will receive 50/50, second will receive 49/50, and so on. Each coaster's average score will determine its ranking and wooden and steel roller coasters will be ranked together.

Not sure I can get behind this method.
Person A votes Coaster A top of their list of 50 - Average score is 50
Person B votes Coaster B top of their list of 50 - Average score is 50
Person C votes Coaster A top of their list of 30 - Average score is now 40, Coaster A is now worse off
Each subsequent person that has ridden less than the average score will be having a negative impact on their favourite.

So after the 2nd entry, Taron is now lower than Katun?
Well, as far as I can understand it, Taron got both n°1 spots and got 26/26 and 10/10 respectively, which equals to a score of 1 on average (the highest possible), while Katun got one 20/26 score which equals to a score of 0,77. I really don't understand what makes the system so confusing to you, apart from the fact that you don't distinguish between fragments and whole numbers?

TilenB is correct. 50/50 = 1.000, 49/50 = 0.980, and so on. I'm doing it based on the fractional value.

This was completely ambiguous in the original explanation. 50/50 is as much notation for 50 out of a total 50 as it is 50 divided by 50. No mention of fractions or decimals.

It's better, but it's still flawed. That element of I'm ranking this ride really highly on my list, but it's going to have a negative impact on the total score, is still in there.

It really wasn't ambiguous. If I was doing it as you said then I would have said "the first coaster gets 50, second gets 49, and son" rather than saying it as a fraction.

Also, if you rank a coaster well, then it will have a positive effect on the score. By doing it this way any coaster that you have been on can potentially get a perfect score of 1.000. And by doing it based on fractions, the more coasters that you have been on, the higher the score for your 2nd, 3rd, etc coasters compared to the 2nd, 3rd, etc coasters of someone who has been on less coasters from the list. No method is foolproof, and someone who has only been on 10 of these may have been on 10 of the very best (meaning that those lower ranked ones could have their scores affected negatively), but it was my best solution personally, and I think it removes most bias and is a fair system. :)

It was ambiguous, or I wouldn't have interpreted it in the wrong way. Sorry.

Exactly. Someone with 10 coasters could come in now with Boulder Dash 2nd and that would knock it below El Toro. Only the #1s are guaranteed to be positive.

Good luck with the research anyway, be interesting to see how it turns out. I might chuck in a second opinion analysis of the figures when it's done, for a bit of fun.

I must say, I was confused as well. I originally thought it was just out of 50. I still think the system is quite flawed, though that is the same as every coaster poll. I wish you luck with this and will be interested in seeing what gets your top spots.
