My guess would be some sort of theater.

But those are some awesome pics! Interesting to see the full original and new Big Dipper layouts side by side.

I've read two Blackpool histories looking and can't find it mentioned.

I suspect it's something to do with the railways or gas works. It's a major building to not be mentioned - so that suggests something industrial.

Was probably demolished during the road building that split the park in half.

The big round building I presume you’re asking about was the Spectatorium. Also known as the Indian Theatre / Chinese Theatre. Opened 1910, burnt down 1939.

Love the aerial pics. I have a load of old postcards & pictures I will put up here very soon, including Big Dipper before / during / after extension. Amazing to think of all that has come and gone yet Big Dipper stands strong nearly 95 years after opening, when it was practically on the beach to begin with.

It would be good if anyone who has posted photos on this topic previously via Farce-o-bucket could reupload them if they get chance via Flickr etc. so we can see these pics again rather than dead links.@Mysterious Sue I would love to see the Battersea Big Dipper pics you put up back on page 10.

.

BPB could build an igloo and it would burn down.

I love the photos of the Big Dipper. Despite being from South Shore, I didn't realise that it was that close to the beach at the beginning. Wonderful image.

That's fantastic, I've never seen any kind of video of a switchback before, let alone a pov! I'm still not completely sure what's powering it though - it seems to get back to the same height that it started without any power! Is it just pushed out of the station by the operators?

Here is some cracking footage from a German Fair in the 1950s.
Including the setting up of the rides which in themselves include one of the single rail coasters I am researching.
Just watching them put it up just using ropes and pullys is quite amazing.

@Mysterious Sue Thanks for the Battersea pics. Did you upload them to CF itself rather than a photo hosting site? Just asking because I get an 'X' in the place of the photos on my work computer. The pics show up on the phone Safari browser but are somewhat squashed. Will have a proper good look on the laptop at home.

I love the little 'roof' at the top of the Big Dipper lift hill. Reminds me of the BPB Log Flume 'garden sheds' ! Really sad to think of what happened on the ride and how this impacted amusement parks at the time. Interesting article with a survivor here, amazing stroke of luck for her that because people pushed past her to get the seats they wanted, she ended up physically unhurt.
