Day 1 - Sightseeing

I wanted to go away for my birthday this year, so after having a look at flight options and seeing where I could get some creds, Frank and I settled on a long weekend to Copenhagen. The plan was to do the 2 parks and also a bit of sightseeing, making it a fairly laid back trip compared to some of our more hectic ones. After a very early morning alarm, we were soon on our way and arrived in the city around 10am. We dropped our bags off at the hotel and decided to go for a wander.

For those who care, we stayed in the Cab Inn City hotel, which I suppose is like a Danish version of a Travelodge. Trying to find a reasonably priced hotel in Copenhagen proved a bit of a challenge, and turns out the Sunday and Monday were Public Holidays (Pentecost) which probably didn’t help matters. The location was perfect, literally round the corner from Tivoli. The hotel could have been good, except the air vent in our room was rattling loudly the entire time preventing us from getting any decent sleep. We complained but the handyman was off for the weekend and the hotel was fully booked so we couldn’t be moved. Not ideal so we were slightly ratty and sleep deprived most of the trip.

We walked along the river and our first stop was to see Freetown Christiania. A few people I’d spoke to had told me that visiting here was a must. I’ll be honest, I thought it was a hole, it stank of weed and it’s just not the sort of place that appeals to me and Frank in the slightest. It’s just a place where people live, albeit slightly alternatively, and I just don’t get the appeal as a visitor attraction. We were in and out in 5 minutes.

Walked back up to the river and along to Nyhavn. Walked past some trampoline things in the ground and had some fun taking pictures.

Nyhavn is the pretty little harbour area with all the colourful houses that graces all the postcards. Its very nice and picturesque but very busy. We decided to do a canal tour as it was getting really warm and we were a bit tired from walking. The price included an entrance voucher for Tivoli. The boat took you up and down the river and along all of the main canals, it was a relaxing way to spend the afternoon in the sun.

Went back to the hotel to check in and went for something to eat at Hard Rock Café, before calling it a night since we were shattered.

Day 2 - Tivoli Gardens

We went to Tivoli on the Saturday since it was my birthday and I wanted to spend the day getting creds. We arrived around midday and decided to just take it easy as the park was open until midnight. First stop was Rutschebanen. We got on the back row and surprisingly there were a few nice pops of airtime. Although it was slightly uncomfortable with the wooden seats. I love the way the track winds in and out of the mountains.

Hard to get a good photo of.

Next up was The Mine, a dark shooter ride on water. The theming inside was decent, although the “gun” things didn’t seem to work properly. Then we did the Spin and Spew. Meh.

Queued up for the Star Flyer next. The ride ops shout at you and pat you down as you go onto the ride to make sure you have nothing in your pockets. It offered some very nice views of the city and I liked that it had quite a long ride cycle, going up and down a couple of times. It was freezing though, so I was pleased when it came to an end.

I decided I was hungry so we went in search of food. I'll throw in some photos of the park here that I think I took whilst we were looking for something to eat.

For some reason we seemed to do a bit of a loop around the park and ended up buying popcorn near the kiddie cred. It started to rain so we took shelter in the queue. Once it cleared up I had to do the kiddie cred on my own. It did 7 shameful cycles. We did the drop tower next which had a decent drop and then decided to go and join the queue for Daemonen.

First time we were on the 4th row and I just don’t really understand the hate. Yes it’s a bit short and it’s not butter smooth but I quite enjoyed it, particularly the drop and the Zero G roll. Its never going to be at the top of anyone’s list, but I think it’s a perfect fit for the park. I rode again later in the day and managed to get front row which was pretty exciting for me as I’d never ridden a floorless coaster front row before. Loved seeing the track right beneath my feet on something so compact.

Walked along to the Flying Trunk which is a dark ride based on Hans Christian Anderson Fairytales. It was alright, didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. Odein Express next which is the powered mine train, fairly decent and gains some good speed, especially on the turns.

I think after this we just wandered around for a while taking pictures, the park has so many beautiful little garden areas, it was nice to just walk round taking it all in.

The ducks were the cutest <3

13260111_10154945070227178_8735141167672284491_n.jpg

They must have been having issues with the ride or something because I literally stood and waited like 20 minutes to get this shot lol.

We booked something to eat in the restaurant on the boat, I can’t remember the name. We were seated outside, but as it was a little chilly they give you blankets. The food was good, if a little expensive, and afterwards were sat there for a while waiting for it to get darker, it was so cosy all wrapped up next to the lake. There were a few ducks just walking around the restaurant as well and no one batted an eyelid lol.

As it was starting to get dark, we went on the tamer side of Fata Morgana, it was so bloody cold but a fun little ride. Unfortunately my camera had run out of battery, but we just walked around for a while enjoying how pretty the park was all lit up. Frank went on the dodgems and I had one more go on Rutschebanen before we decided to call it a day. Spotted the fun house on the way out so had a quick 10 minutes in there and then off back to the hotel we went.

Day 3 - Bakken

As the park didn’t open until midday, we decided to pay a visit to the Round Tower first, which is the highest building in the old part of the city. Instead of stairs to reach the top, there is a ramp that winds round the building. Apparently this so that back in the day, you could get to the library half way up by horse and carriage. We took it a slow pace, and the walk was fairly easy and took some photos of the view once we had got to the top.

Walked back to the station and jumped on the Metro to Klampenborg. 20 minutes later we had arrived. To get to Bakken you have to walk through a park, it’s very pretty with lots of tall trees and a very foresty vibe about it. It should have been a pleasant walk, but they offer horse and carriage rides around the park and there was horse sh*t everywhere!!!

Got to the park and the first cred we came across was the Intamin Mine Train. Wow this was a surprise! Really picks up some speed and if you are sitting near the back there is a good pop of airtime over the first drop. It’s a shame it only does one lap, and even though there was no queue they make you get off and queue again so they can scan your wristband again. Pfft. Anyway, really good ride.

Next was the racing Zierer cred. Meh, +1. Then the Wild Mouse. Definitely one of the least painful Wild Mouse’s i’ve ever been on, the turns were actually fairly smooth. The drops were uneventful though.

I was looking forward to riding Rutschebanen number 2 of the trip. It was underwhelming. Smooth yes, but slow, uneventful and no airtime whatsoever. I know its old but just…..no. It was boring.

Tornado was next, I’d heard some things about it and told Frank to brace himself at the start. He asked why, and he soon knew why! The launch into the first turn is pretty brutal, followed by some quite aggressive spins. I can’t really say anything positive about the coaster, it’s just too rough to enjoy, its only saving grace is that it’s over fairly quickly.

13092143_10154945072852178_7291671689248732452_n.jpg

Did the Skyforce type ride next. We had a couple of goes, Frank managed to get his spinning on the first go. I just couldn’t quite catch the wind in the right way and never went all the way, I gave up after the 2nd go.

13263679_10154945072747178_4221402599829411665_n.jpg

Kiddie cred next. Frank at least joined me in the shame this time. +1.

We did some of the flats including the shot tower and fun house. We did the Ghost Train, which is one of the best traditional ghost trains I’ve ridden in a long time. I’m not sure of there were people in there or not, if not then some really realistic figures jumping out and some really creepy imagery.

13256282_10154945073107178_8837412207095466061_n.jpg

I think that’s it….by this point we had ridden everything we wanted and there was no real desire to re-ride anything. A short report, but in all honesty the place didn’t really do much for me. Bar a couple of small surprises, everything was mediocre and the place felt like a permanent funfair...which may be the vibe its going for but it’s just not for me.

Headed back to the city and walked around for a while, before going for some dinner and heading back to the hotel.

Day 4 - More Sightseeing and home

Had an early one as we wanted to see a few last bits before our flight home. First stop was a rather lengthy walk up the see Copenhagen’s most famous statue – The Little Mermaid. So underwhelming in person. I didn’t realise how tiny it was!! And it’s a nightmare to try and take a good photo as people are just swarming around it. Nevermind.

This was the best photo I could get standing next to it lol.

The area to and from the statue is stunning though…lots of nice things to look at.

13260267_10154945075017178_8658496795818380593_n.jpg

We walked back down to Christianborg Palace as I wanted to go up the tower, which is the highest viewpoint in Copenhagen. It’s closed on Mondays. Fuxake. Have some pictures of it instead of from it.

13240096_10154945075312178_6751536735677303519_n.jpg

We couldn’t go to Denmark without sampling some Danish Pastries. We went to the Anderson Bakery, which is on the outksirts of Tivoli, and sampled 3 mini pastries. They were delicious, easily could have had all 3 to myself.

13227233_10154962092672178_5138505811797751806_n.jpg

And that was it. It was time to go and grab our luggage and head back to the airport.

Overall I had a fantastic time. Copenhagen is probably one of my favourite cities that I’ve visited, lots of interesting things to look at, its laid back and most importantly I felt completely safe the entire time I was there. The coaster selection isn’t great, and I wasn’t a massive fan of Bakken, but Tivoli is definitely worth the effort simply for being so beautiful. I’d recommend the city and park to those who aren’t even enthusiasts.

Thanks to those who read this and for making it this far :--D

^You've pretty much summed up my thoughts on Bakken. I've been twice and not really rated it on either occasion though people have said that it has a much better atmosphere at night.

just don’t really understand the hate. Yes it’s a bit short and it’s not butter smooth but I quite enjoyed it, particularly the drop and the Zero G roll. Its never going to be at the top of anyone’s list, but I think it’s a perfect fit for the park.

I don't think it gets "hate" necessarily. It just usually falls at, or near, the bottom of "Best B&M/Floorless" lists because it's so insubstantial compared to most/all of the others. It's a decent ride; it just doesn't hold up well when compared to others of the type.

If you stayed in the Cab Inn hotel thingy that's literally one street down from Tivoli then we stayed in the same place, it's actually quite impressive how they've managed to make the rooms as small as they are.

Similar views to you on Daemonen, quite enjoyed it.

Nice trip report. To be honest, you've almost echoed my first impressions of both Bakken and Tivoli when I visited in April. Also, The Little Mermaid is pretty underwhelming too. I love Tivoli at night, and Copenhagen is a fabulous city.
