What's new

If you could design a coaster, what type/elements would you pick and where would it go?

So, picture this. You've just been asked by a random manufacturer (of your choice) to design a new ride, and everything that goes into it is your choice.

It can be as big or small as you want, break any record, have any name (as long as it's appropriate) you want, it's all up to you.

So let's start with my choice.

Coaster Name: Twister
Coaster Type: Gerstlauer Infinity
Park: Kings Island (since Cedar Fair only owns ONE Gerstlauer)
Theme: Tornadoes, natural disasters.
Elements in order: Launch, downwards helix into a dive loop, left turn, vertical loop over the launch, 2 heartline rolls, upwards helix, launch #2, batwing element, U-Turn, launch #3, cobra roll going through the batwing to make the "Staffordshire Knot" visual element, 2 corkscrews, downwards helix, 3 heartline rolls, helix up, launch #4, vertical loop, airtime x3, upwards helix, 3 heartlines, final brakes.
Inversions: 17
Broken Records: Most inversions

Neat thread concept, heres mine:
Name:
Type: Intamin Blitz
Park:
Theme:
Elements (in order): 210 ft. LSM Lift into a 97 degree drop, followed by a left high speed curve into a sustained ejector airtime hill, procceding into a series of high speed banked curves into another sustained ejector hill followed by a zero g roll, then going into another sustained ejector airtime hill with a left banked curve into a slow heartline roll before the brake run. Afterwards, it will then proceed to go up another LSM Lift with the same stats as the other, into a right hand curve with a insane zero g stall, with a lateral section as above, then follows with a sustained ejector uphill into a quad down into a zero g roll with a right banked curve into a slow moving heartline roll before hitting the brake run and procceding back into the station.
Inversions: 4
Speed: 75 mph (Approx.)
Claims: Tallest beyond vertical drop(s)

That sounds like fun.

Mine sounds like Hell on wheels now that I think about it.

I would be really confused as to why the manufacturer is asking me to design this new ride, and would pass the job on to someone who actually knows how to design coasters.
I've got a whole book on how to design one. "Coasters 101" but I forget the author's name.

"Okay, I'm ready to start designing that coaster. I had one quick question, though, is it station then lift or lift then station? Okay. Great *makes a post-it*. This is my cheat sheet, sorry. I beat like every scenario in RCT."

Seriously, if given some crazy luck/money, I would pitch the idea of a major park near Foxwoods Casino or Mohegan Sun in CT. Good terrain, lake, no nearby towns for height restrictions, no real competition in the area due to SFNE's area and height limits, huge swathes of land available, possible partnership with one of the casinos, get the Boston, Providence, CT, NYC market on lockdown.

My home park is in desperate need for a new coaster, so I came up with something that would be a perfect fit.

Coaster Name: Osprey
Coaster Type: B&M Invert
Park: Darien Lake (replacing Mind Eraser)
Theme: Bird of prey; white track, dark grey supports
Elements in order: 170ft lift hill, dropping right into 140ft tall vertical loop, to a cobra roll, zero-g roll, then a lefthand overbank over the main drop and to the MCBR. After the brake run a leftward banked drop into a loop, into a low-to-the-ground left turn into a corkscrew, right turn under it into a small airtime hill thourgh the loop, turning right into another corkscrew, finishing off with a left-hand helix, inline twist, and a right-hand turn into the final brake run.
Inversions: 8
Broken Records: Most inversions on a inverted coaster, tallest vertical loop on an inverted coaster

I know you're just showing an idea and rough sketch of the imagined idea, but can you please send that to B&M like you have the best proposal ever? Like, that exact file. It would be hilarious.

^Be even more hilarious if they then offered him a job!

My coaster? I'd have RMC build the mythical cross-valley woodie at Alton Towers. I'd leave the nitty gritty design work to Grubb and his team of geniuses, but I'd want it to start in the Dark Forest area, mince around the bottom end of Rita for a bit (just to warm you up), before plunging into the gardens and up the other side towards Forbidden Valley.
I'd imagine that the climb up the hill would zap its energy somewhat, so maybe a sneaky rolling launch to give it enough speed to mince around Galactica for a bit, then another huge plunge into the valley and back up to the starting point.

"World's Longest, Tallest, Fastest, Steepest Wooden Rollercoaster".
Stick that on your posters, Merlin.
And all of that without going above the tree line.
If that wasn't enough - "First Wooden Coaster With 4 Inversions".

Thank you please.

That would be tough though. It's estimated that the area near Dark Forest is around 614ft above sea level and the main part of the gardens is around 520ft above sea level, so that's around 96ft not including structure. Add on a hypothetical 69ft for lift hill (that's Rita's max height) you get to around 165ft, not the tallest woodie by around 20ft (30 if Colossos reopens).
The drop would need to go off to the east of the gardens where the elevation drops quite a bit more to get anywhere near the height record.

And it still wouldn't get the "tallest" record. Largest drop, maybe, but not tallest. ;)

Or go the route SFGAm went and call it the Tallest drop. Still technically true, but with a marketing spin to make it more appealing.

We'll do this then. I'm cool with that.
So apart from this minor tweak, we're good to go then, yes?
Who do we call?

The issue with dropping over in that area is the drop will totally be hidden from view, very similar to Lightning Rod. From a riders perspective that's great, night rides would be awesome, but from a Merlin marketing perspective it's difficult.

Call Sean from TPW, he'll totally be able to help set this up

Whilst I agree, all you need is a quad-down (or equivalent) in view of the public and the ride will sell itself.
