Singapore/Taiwan 2017

So Singapore has been somewhere I've wanted to go for many years and I had several plans that fell through due to costs etc. In January Patrick and I randomly decided to just book something so we ended up booking a two week trip in March and added in Taiwan to mix things up a bit. It was a ridiculous trip and totally worth it. We flew out with Singapore Airlines who are fab, the entertainment selection was amazing, food was tasty and the leg room was decent. We even managed to land into Singapore an hour early, slightly burdenous though as it meant we arrived at 5am! We wasted an hour or two with a cold drink and having a look around the insane airport, they even have a slide!

When it was a more sensible hour we used to the MRT to get over to Gardens by the bay. What a fantastic way to start our trip, the place is absolutely amazing, we started with the botanical gardens which was nice and then the cloud forest which was fab and ended with the walkway up in the trees. The scenery is absolutely stunning and it was nice to do it in the morning when it wasn't crazy hot and the crowds were non-existent.

We saw the below box in a restaurant we ate in, it amused us but it was just cleaning products.

One of my favourite things on the Singapore metro was the different advertising schemes they had to inform peeps about etiquette, each one had its own hashtag and everything, wish I'd taken pics of the whole set.

We headed over to China Town to see what that was like. It was as you'd expect really, aside from the crazy mix of architectural styles (colonial, Chinese, modern) it's very similar to what you'll find in other major cities. We'd already eaten and we're not really into tat so there wasn't a whole lot of things of interest to us, oh well, tick.

We found a shop selling loads of 90s toys, I went into nostalgia overload when I saw a large Power Rangers toy I used to have...

After a bit of faff going back to the airport to pick up our suitcases we then made our way to our first hotel in the Katung area. The area wasn't that exciting but the hotels are much cheaper. After sorting ourselves out we headed over to Marina Bay which is the very nice modern area, after a bit of an initial wander to see the Merlion we grabbed some dinner while the sun set.

The area was hosting a free light festival which was cool, lots of interesting things to look at, even the Merlion had some projection mapping going on. We also watched the lighting for the free show that takes place in front of the Marina Bay Sands hotel building, it's crazy how many lights and lasers they use.

It was then back to the hotel much later than we planned for some much needed rest before our first theme park of the trip.

That white tigerzord was one of my favourite toys when I was a kid; it wasn't as cool as the originals which you could combine together, and then whack the green dragonzord on, and then stack them all inside the giant white dinzord ****ing thing, but iirc it had sounds and lights!!!

Singapore looks ****ing lovely btw.

Monday 20th

So our second day of the trip was to Universal Studios. We originally had this day down as just more sightseeing but our original booked day for this park was a Saturday and I was concerned about crowds and cred anxiety so we booked up a second day. We headed straight over and got a small breakfast at the HarbourFront station.

How to get to Universal Studios Singapore:
We got the MRT to HarbourFront station (orange and purple lines). This is situated in the basement of a shopping mall. First floor there is a shuttle bus over to Sentosa Island but we opted for the monorail. The station for the monorail is up on the 4th floor and is very obvious. You can either buy a Sentosa entry ticket on a machine or use a Singapore EasyCard (highly recommend), entry to the island costs $4. Universal Studios is just outside the first stop - Waterfront.

The weather was a little sad, overcast with the occasional bit of rain but it was still crazy humid. As soon as we arrived we knew crowds wouldn't be a problem, yay. Like the Osaka resort the American streets are all under cover, absolutely necessary in this tropical climate.

Like the other Studio parks, the street sets were incredible, the level of detail is fantastic, we spent a fair bit of time over our two days milling around it. The next area we encountered was Sci-fi City which looked cool but wasn't a large area. You'll find Transformers, a fast food restaurant, a spin 'n' spew and the signature ride, Battlestar Galactica. Due to their no loose item policy we actually ended up riding Mummy first. It's pretty good, pretty much the same as the other two (exact clone of the Hollywood one?) - still not a fan of UV lit cutouts though, especially after epic pyrotechnics and sets.

sfy0Hx.jpg

uA9cvf.jpg

vCk3jy.jpg

After Mummy we rode Battlestar Galactica Human (red/sit-down) and then Cylon (grey/invert). We lucked out with minimal queues for all three rides, which was nice. It was raining a fair bit during our rides so we weren't really able to see what was happening, which made our first rides on both sides interesting. Human isn't that great, fairly forceless but the first drop is pretty good and the way it interacts with the mess of track and supports is interesting (when you can see it). Cylon on the other hand is incredible, was not expecting to love it quite as much as I do. It's forceful, smooth and it's relentless. The inline over the launch hills is amazing (found the only nasty transition after that element though). That's another thing, the launch on both rides is fantastic, starts off slow and then about half way up it just explodes and throws you up and over into the first drop. Pictures will never do these rides justice.

We headed into Jurassic Park next where we found Canopy Flyer, this actually had a bit of a queue but it had a poor through-put so was expected. There is nothing of note about this ride, there's not much to see from the ride but at least the area looks nice.

zBSSmn.jpg

dxvLcA.jpg

Found my favourite food cart...

TASDHY.jpg

We then jumped into the small queue for Jurassic Park rapids adventure. This is essentially the same ride you'll find at the other parks apart from it's a rapids ride instead of the big boats. This means the queue moves a lot slower and the scenes don't really work as you're always spinning. There is however a scene before you go into the building which is the most "rapids-like" moment and is quite cool. The interior of the building was just dark, was a bit boring and felt like it went on for ages. The lift system meant you didn't get anywhere near as much of a build-up to the drop compared to the other rides and the Rex was obvious from the moment we entered, rather than as a surprise reveal at the end. The drop was terrifying because drops on rapids always are. So overall meh and it seems weird they changed from a model of a ride that already works extremely well.

It was then time to enter the dreaded world of Dreamworks *le sigh*
I have to admit the general theming in the Shrek area is fantastic, I was loving the puns everywhere. Obviously we went over to the Puss in Boots coaster first. It's a weird thing, a suspended family coaster from Zamperla that attempts to re-create a main chunk of the stand-along film. The queueline has some cool theming (and a video attempting to fill in the story gap for those that didn't see the film - so most people), I chuckled at quite a lot of the posters on the walls etc. A lot of the "scenes" during the ride seemed weird though purely because of the way this ride is designed. It is basically a dark ride in the light and with the ride essentially taking part on two levels it could have done with hiding the sheer crazy level of supports in a shed - the ride is tucked away into a tiny corner at the back of the park anyway. However it is all out in the open and it just feels weird, not helped by the weird scene at the end which is just a bizarre way to end the ride.

Having now ridden all of the coasters we decided to start ticking off the other rides on offer. We started by going over to the New York section for Sesame Street but we got sidetracked by Lights Camera Action. Not really knowing what this was we were excited to see what it was and weren't too shocked to discover it is a special effects show. It started with a brief video presentation before we all moved into the main show stage (yay, no stupid pre-show that takes forever and has unnecessary audience participation). The scene here was a New York dockyard during a crazy storm and it is pretty impressive. A lot of things happen that are very unpredictable.

After that awesome surprise it was over the street for Sesame Street Spaghetti Space Chase. This might be the most ridiculous theme for a dark ride in existence and I LOVE IT. Once again the puns were everywhere and the plot is so ridiculous. Macaroni the Merciless steals all of the Worlds pasta and Elmo goes to save the day and takes you along for the journey. The yip-yip creatures make an appearance too so my day was pretty much made right there and then. It's so silly and fun and yeah, just awesome.

We then did Transformers which is the original one and exactly the same as the others, needed a bit of refurb though. Some of the screens needed a clean and some effects didn't really work. Overall though it's still awesome and for me ever so slightly better than Spiderman.

elSOCy.jpg

lM03W3.jpg

Elmo was outside but he had a massive queue so we didn't get too close.

Nn046V.jpg

It was then back over to Madagascar, a Crate adventure. Come to think of it, if you hate puns you might just want to avoid this park. Err, so the ride then. Expectations were set low when the queueline theming looked dreary and old and most of the speakers were loud and blown out. However the ride is actually a decent dark ride. It essentially just covers the story of the first film with a mix of animatronics and screens. While I loved that they had animatronics it was weird how they'd say a line or two and then they'd stop as you're attention was meant to be drawn over to the next one who moves/makes noise. Also quite a lot of dead space throughout. Also don't really understand why it's a boat ride, probably would have worked better as a jeep or something *shrug*. Either way, I'm sure fans of the films would adore it and it is fun for what it is, just not very re-ridable.

I approved of the theming on the carousel though...

We then took another ride on each side of Battlestar Galactica. Human was just a bit dull still and Cylon was fab.

It was then time to leave where we encountered a wild Hershey bar.

We grabbed a meal at Chili's and headed back to the hotel to get some rest before another flight the next day. We both enjoyed our day at Universal and we looked forward to coming back to the park on the last day of our trip.

Tuesday 21st

This day consisted of getting a flight from Singapore over to Taiwan. Once we landed we caught a high speed rail train down to Taichung. There was a fair bit of faff involved and by the time we got to our hotel it was like 7pm. Taichung wasn't that nice but after a little wander we did find a nice park near our hotel. Wish I'd taken pictures but I was too busy playing Pokemon Go that evening. We picked up a personal wifi device for this portion of the trip and it was a godsend, having wifi all day with an excellent connection was perfect and I'd highly recommend getting one for long travels.

Wednesday 22nd March

So after a day of just travelling we got up at a sensible time and made our way down to E-DA World which is part of a hotel/shopping mall resort. We got a train over to the High Speed rail station in Taichung, grabbed some breakfast from a tasty bakery and then hopped on the next high speed train down to Zuoying. For some reason the station at a bunch of cardboard style things including a cafe/restaurant.

BAWZpU.jpg

Once at Zuoying station we headed outside to catch the bus down to E-DA. The first bus that turned up looked like it was heading there but no one else who was waiting for the park got on which was confusing, turned out it didn't go all the way to the park? Anyways we got on the next one that arrived, the buses are quite obvious as they're covered in the park characters and logos.

eapUgI.jpg

The bus takes about 20-30 minutes and faffs about with a weird route where it goes past the park to a University before going back down to the park. Weird routes was going to be the theme of the day as the obvious looking entrance was only for large groups so we headed inside the shopping mall building to go upstairs to the ticket desks and actual entrance.

bjs8f5.jpg

tHbbzf.jpg

The layout of this park is weird with several sections of multi-level buildings with various things on each floor and then some major rides outside. However navigating the place can be a bit of a headache at times because it's a silly place. We headed straight for the large Vekoma coaster, Big Air. It's certainly big and something I wasn't expecting was it uses a catch car to take you to the top of one spike before releasing you. There's some decent air time but overall a bit meh.

Inside the big building at the far end of the park is a custom Vekoma family coaster called Dark Ride (very imaginative ride names here). This actually had a bit of a burdenous queue and had a bit of a drilling into the Earth type of theme so was intrigued to see what was inside. My memory is already a bit hazy but there wasn't much happening inside but it was still a fun little family coaster.

Ug449T.jpg

eOahas.jpg

c06taT.jpg

0ytmVo.jpg

The next attraction we came across was Taiwan Formosa, a custom flying theatre. There was a bit of a poor pre-show which we were escorted out of about half way through, very odd. It was dreadful, weird cuts in the film, motion of the seating not quite matching the footage etc. I don't like these things at the best of times but I find it weird so many knock-offs exist in Asia.

nNb8nI.jpg

ogVZ2a.jpg

6wKD5g.jpg

It was then up to the roof for the very imaginatively named... Roof coaster. It's a Fabbri spinning mouse coaster and the layout isn't quite standard, so that was nice? Up on the roof of this building was boiling though so by the time we got on I needed some time indoors.

yzvG5w.jpg

an1EPk.jpg

Xj8f2i.jpg

Only one more coaster to go, more on that in a bit.

Dzj2Vx.jpg

vUHdtp.jpg

I loved the park's character designs, the place was covered in posters featuring them which was interesting.

4ssIjY.jpg

In the basement of the main building was mainly construction sites but a new VR thing had recently opened. VR Fighting was a whole bunch of rooms where 6-8 people per room can play an interactive shooty VR game. The two ladies tried their best to explain to us everything in English, they did an excellent job despite their lack of confidence. The game was actually pretty fun and apparently we did very well (there must have been a score screen somewhere but I didn't see it).

fTP4rC.jpg

It was then back outside for the last coaster of the day, Flume ride. This Golden Horse water coaster had an odd layout and in the end it got us absolutely drenched. At least the sun was out to dry us off fairly quickly.

We meandered outside for a bit while drying off so I took a few pics.

It was then back inside for Pirates 5D: Ship of Souls. It was a haunted walkthrough with a few live actors. There was a cool set before entering and there was an English instruction video which was nice. It wasn't scary but due to the lack of light in some scenes it did take us a little while to move through. The live actors weren't scary in the slightest but the sets were incredible. Some amazing details and effects.

VlRSPU.jpg

zajz4s.jpg

The merch had 3D crossed out too, so maybe this was an update?

It was then time to leave the park, there wasn't anything we wanted to re-ride. The shopping mall was huge and also had some nice Venetian theming. We ended up having a really nice lunch at a German themed Taiwan beerhouse (the clash of the theme and menu items amused us) and then watched Beauty and the Beast at the cinema.

Overall it was a weird little park and a nice +4.

Weird - not sure USS appeals to me that much (but shouldn't count it out at some point!) - have actually been on Sentosa Island before USS was a thing (Oct.2000), place was some botantical gardens and the like, most dull but the cable car ride over was cool I recall.

Taiwan though - that all looks nice and quirky! :)

This looks like a cool trip! Maybe [another] one to add to the list of "future trips that I should do".

I need to stop being basic and get to Asia. :p

Thursday 23rd March

I was quite excited for this day because B&Ms, we still had to get there though.

How to get to Janfusun Fancyworld:
We got a mainline train from Taichung to Douliu station. Follow the exit signs to the bus stops. Over the road is a tiny tourism ticket booth. Here you can arrange return travel and entry into the park. Now the official website has a whole bus timetable etc but (probably because it was quiet) it was just a taxi ride which we shared with 4 students (who helpfully translated what the taxi lady wanted to tell us about the return journey - makes sure to arrive at that location before the selected departure time).

By car the journey to the park is about 20-30 minutes (our driver was quick, so probably took us about 15). The park is in quite a mountainous area with the park being very awkwardly designed. You go up this big hill before even encountering the entrance and then the rides are all situated on the over side of the hill. Provides some interesting views though.

Into the park and we soon stumble across G5: Diving Machine. This is essentially a clone of Oblivion, it feels 4 times bigger though with most of its drop exposed on the hillside. With not many people in the park we dived straight on. The drop is excellent, as you'd expect, but it was interesting how intimidating it felt. More intimidating than Oblivion? For me I don't think there's much in it but Patrick seemed to prefer G5. Both really use their location perfectly and to the same great effect - maybe that's why I'm not a fan of the others as much?

It was odd how the other B&M, a floorless sit-down, felt so small when looking down at it...

mfxDct.jpg

Down the hillside we went (via a massive escalator, what is this, Universal Studios Hollywood?). The escalator had operators at both ends, the lady at the top was feeding some stray cats, more on those later. The main area of the park has been invaded by a familiar (to me) IP, in Vicky the Viking (can be found in all the Plopsa parks). It was strange seeing something that was familiar in an unusual location. The area recently received an interesting update which was to be our next ride of the day.

yyJIpe.jpg

WzZYaL.jpg

VVDbzR.jpg

Our second ride of the day was a pirate ship complete with VR. W.T.F? Who thought this was a good idea in any way? Obviously we had to give it a go. I sat in the middle of the boat because I'm not getting full-on air time with a box strapped to my face. I didn't need to worry though as I managed to pick up a faulty one, I just had a static image so I took mine off shortly after I realised it was busted. Patrick however felt a little motion sick towards the end.

Patrick decided to ride the tiny log flume but the colour of the water looked unappealing so I opted to bad lady.

pC2dfe.jpg

IRUOx2.jpg

It was then time for the second cred of the day, a family coaster which had VR as an option. The VR worked for me this time but it was dreadful. It was a dinosaur themed safari thing and the graphics were about the level of a PS1 and in the same aspect ratio too - 4:3. Just what is the point of VR if it's just a 4:3 square image in front of your face? (I think the shark pirate ship may have had the same problem). Not even moving my head seemed to have an effect of what I was seeing (side to side etc) so any time I tried I just felt a bit gross as it didn't match the movement of the ride. I hated VR on rides before I tried it, these examples weren't helping the industry arguments for it. As for the ride? Just a family coaster, +1 and done.

We then came across a Vicky themed mirror maze so decided to head inside. So, before entering we were given protective gloves which was a new thing for me. After the initial mirror maze section there was a few interactive screen things which were neat and were entertaining us and a few other peeps.

J1qh3r.jpg

lXkxeA.jpg

We then headed over to the third and final coaster of the day, Insane Speed (according to rcdb). This appears to be a total custom layout but features most of the typical elements found on the floorless B&Ms. We sat at the front and it was pretty enjoyable, nothing too special about it.

Having realised we had pretty much "done" the park already and still had hours till our return taxi back it was time to start going at a slower pace. We had a very nice meal which consisted of several unidentifiable bits, some nice, some a bit weird. Overall it was very filling for very little money though.

We decided to take a ride on the Vicky themed train that does a loop around the waterpark. We took a ride on the S&S shot tower which was pretty good before getting a couple more rides on the floorless coaster. On one of our rides we sat at the back where it was crazy rough so on our next ride we made sure to sit at the front.

We had to wait a fair bit for the taxi to arrive, it was a different driver this time and she stuck Patrick and I right in the back of the car, the two tallest passengers, to say our legs were squashed would be an understatement. Overall it was a nice day, just wished there was more to do or was arranged to go back at a much earlier time - nearly impossible to predict these things though. I was glad there were several school groups in the park, made the park feel more alive and yet no idea where they kept going as we never waited for any of the rides.

Back in Taichung we had a nice evening, found an awesome Japanese restaurant in a shopping mall near the station and at the hotel we watched the Disney channel where we discovered that 1- There was a Japanese made Stitch TV animated show and 2- Lilo was replaced by some weird girl and most importantly 3- this episode exists...

Thank you for the "how to get there"s!!

Honestly looking up how to get to some of these parks is a mess, thought it'd be helpful for anyone that ventures out that way.

Yes, the SLC is the one with ridiculous theming, wish photos could do it justice.

(incidentally is it just me that is struggling to load this thread (on a pc) - something about the imagehost you are using, but takes ages, hogs the internet bandwidth and then also doesn't load all the images. Going to the album on imageshack seems to load ok tho. Happy to be told its just me :) )

Nope, me too. I thought it was just me at home last night, but it took surprisingly long at work today too where normally these kind of things load very quickly. Suffering from the same delays again now! Definitely not just you, although might be just us. ;)

I'm using Tapatalk, and the images aren't loading for me either.

Yep, sorry I noticed this yesterday too when I was at work. Just gone through and changed the links to smaller sizes, hoping it fixes the issue. It seems to have solved it on chrome, tapatalk seems to still be slow but I usually find that with images in that app. Might make further changes if everyone is still having problems.

Friday 24th March

Another day, another theme park in the middle of nowhere.

How to get to Formosan Aboriginal Cultural Village:
From Taichung there is a coach. You can get ticket combo deals at Hexin Bus Gancheng Station (和欣客運干城站) - 400, Taiwan, Taichung City, Central District. The coach takes over an hour.

We didn't go to the aforementioned station first, we ended up at the second bus stop and the bus was too full to stop, with about 30-45mins between coaches this was not ideal so we headed to the bus station. It should be noted that Taichung was a slight nightmare to navigate as most of the city is under construction - looks like the entire sewage system etc is being upgraded. Anyway after being slightly harassed by a taxi guy we got on the next coach. I managed to do a good job throughout this entire trip of sleeping on these coach journeys, falling asleep in a city and waking up to crazy beautiful mountainous area was quite nice.

The entrance area was really nice and a good sign of things to come. The first area to the left seems to be sci-fi which was random but quite cool, before quickly turning into a small China town place and then Mayan. Bit random but each area was nicely themed.

The first coaster we encountered was in the Mayan area, Maya Adventure, a Vekoma SLC. Now I was aware we were getting an SLC but what I was not expecting was the sheer level of theming on this thing. The queueline alone was fab and the safety instructions video was cool. The entire area is beautifully themed, the lift hill goes up a temple, part of the ride goes through another building, it rushes up a waterfall and all sorts. It feels really compact and exciting and one of my favourite themed coasters. It still rides horrifically but I like that they tried.

It was absolutely boiling so we decided to do the cool looking log flume next. Despite the park being pretty crowded with school groups this was the only thing we really queued for. We didn't get that wet but we appreciated, yet again, the level of theming this had. It was a shame there weren't more viewing areas of it.

Leaving our bags in the log flume lockers we headed over to the Mack watercoaster. The theming was very similar to the one at Europa park which amused us. Next to it was a construction site for a new area (opening next year?), with a Spanish theme it looked like it would be pretty cool once finished.

After grabbing some food we headed to the third and final coaster of the day, Space Mountain. It was situated in a building which had a few similarities with Disney IPs...

This is one of those Vekoma family coasters with that bobsled seating, I'm not a fan of this seating arrangement. However the ride was really fun and very smooth. Next up was Jurassic Cruise which was a dreadful boat ride through some very dated dino scenes. At least outside it they had LEGO dinos.

Running out of rides to do we then did the Mack Monorail. It wasn't very exciting but it did go through Space Mountain.

We were tempted to see what the Ultraman thing was (looked temporary) but it was an upcharge. Bye.

The Intamin drop tower was spiting which was a shame. The theming was fab.

So having mopped up the "theme park" section we hopped on gondola ride 1 which takes you to the top of the aboriginal section of the park, we then got on gondola ride 2 to get over to the lake. The views are outstanding.

After a bit we headed back to the aboriginal bit of the park. It was nicely laid out and if we hadn't gone through at the end of the day I think the atmosphere would have been really cool with the demonstrations and shows going on.

In the blossom tree area we found some people walking their pet rabbits... obviously.

We then exited the park, looked over at the very ornate gardens in front of an oddly located colonial building and waited for the coach back.

Back in Taichung and I decided to get pictures of the train station. The whole train line was getting a huge overhaul which included raising the rail line to high up in the air and building massive new snazzy stations. Taichung's new station had clearly only recently opened as half of it wasn't ready and the old station was how you exited, it was weird but I loved the crazy infrastructure upgrade.

Yet again thanks for reading - next up is something very unique.

Always nice to read TR from distant countries. G5 looks fab, fully taking advantage of the terrain. For the Mayan SLC, it is really unfortunate they mustered so many efforts for such a bad coaster.

Also loved your report on Singapore. I am intrigued by the Vekoma invert though, wasn't expecting it to be reportedly that intense!

This is the park I'd been waiting for! I've always thought the theming looks weirdly excellent for a park nobody talks about. So glad it looks fun even if it's not a full day park.

Yeah, I didn't really know anything about the park before visiting, surprised you don't hear about it. I'd say it's a full day park if you take in the views/culture side of things, we actually wanted more time there.

Going to post another PTR from this weekend first and then I'll be continuing this report in a few days time :)
